Illinois Attorney General Law Clerk Positions
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan invites and encourages law students to apply to serve as volunteer law clerks in her office. The Illinois Attorney General's Office provides excellent opportunities for law students to improve their skills and knowledge in a wide range of subject areas, including consumer protection, government representation, civil rights, environmental enforcement, antitrust, complex civil litigation, civil and criminal appeals, and criminal law enforcement. Working closely with attorneys in the Chicago, Springfield, or Carbondale office, law clerks investigate facts, review documents, research legal issues, and draft legal memoranda, correspondence, and pleadings. ABA Section of Anti-Trust Law
Summer fellowship for 1Ls and 2Ls
The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project (“Project”) is a full-time eight (8) week minimum, summer fellowship program open to all first and second year law students. The Project is part of an overall effort by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law (“Section”) to provide unique training opportunities to law students who may wish to consider public service as a profession, while at the same time, assisting states that are in need of additional resources to fulfill their mission. Students will work in the consumer protection departments of the offices of state (or territorial) attorneys general. If feasible, students will be afforded the opportunity to participate in some antitrust matters as well. The following fourteen (14) states and one territory have been selected to receive a Steiger Fellow during the summer of 2006: ILLINOIS, IOWA, MISSISSIPPI, MONTANA, NEVADA, THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE
NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS, OREGON, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, TEXAS, UTAH, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WASHINGTON STATE and WISCONSIN. Each Steiger Fellow will receive a gross stipend of $5000 for the entire summer, and will be responsible for all taxes and other required deductions. The Project does NOT provide either housing or travel expenses, with the exception of the Steiger Fellow selected to serve in the Attorney General’s Office of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Gray Plant Mooty is committed to attracting and retaining a highly-qualified, diverse work force. As part of these ongoing efforts, the Minneapolis office recruits 1L minority law students to participate in its Summer Associate Program. For Summer 2006, the Minneapolis office will hire one or two 1L summer associates.
During the 12-14 weeks of the summer, our 1L summer associates participate fully in our Summer Associate program. First Year Summer Extern Program
The Department of Law will have up to 36 highly qualified first year law students working as volunteers and assigned to one of its twelve divisions for a 10 week summer extern program. The program is designed to provide first year law students with a challenging externship that reflects the demands and rewards of public service, as well as a program focused on legal research and writing. The Law Department selects well-rounded law students who have exhibited academic excellence and an interest in public service from law schools across the nation.
During the summer, externs are assigned to one of the twelve practice groups within the Law Department and where they will be asked to assist the attorneys on a variety of legal issues within their assigned division.
The program includes social activities designed to allow externs and members of the Law Department to become acquainted in less formal settings. In addition, the Department hosts a brown bag lunch series featuring speakers addressing legal issues that affect the City in areas such as environmental and First Amendment law, and provides the externs with an opportunity to meet with City department officials and members of state and federal judiciary.
The Law Department seeks talented, promising individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many of our attorneys are active in civic and professional activities and organizations. Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP)
The JIOP is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in Illinois, Texas, Miami, FL and Phoenix, AZ. ABA Public Service Summer Internship
The American Bar Association’s Division for Public Service sponsors an annual Public Service Summer Internship. The internship is a unique program designed for 2nd and 3rd year law students to engage in an individualized public interest legal research and writing project over a 10-week summer period. In concert with Division attorneys and law school faculty reviewer, students will develop and complete a substantive legal monograph with the opportunity to be published. The project must involve one of the following areas of law: Bioethics and the Law, Disability Law, Election Law, Environmental Law, Homelessness and Poverty, Immigration Law, Law Library of Congress and Access to Legal Resources, National Security Law, Substance Abuse, Public Interest in Law School and as a Career. The Executive Fellowship Program
is sponsored by the California State University, Sacramento’s Center for California Studies and the Office of the Governor to provide an experiential learning opportunity in California state government. Fellows work full-time in high levels of the Executive branch and meet weekly for graduate seminars. This program uniquely integrates work experiences with academic and professional development.

Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program
The California State Assembly Fellowship Program, founded in 1957, is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious legislative fellowship programs. This unique program provides an opportunity for individuals of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and experiences to directly participate in the legislative process. In 1987, the program was renamed the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program to honor California’s former Assembly Speaker and State Treasurer. Each year, 18 individuals are selected to participate in the program. The 11-month fellowship provides an introduction to public policy formation and adoption in the California Legislature through full-time work as a professional legislative staff member.

2006 Minority Fellowships in Environmental Law
Offered by the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources
The American Bar Association ( ABA) Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources is pleased to announce the sponsorship of several Fellowships for eligible minority law students during the summer of 2006. The ABA Minority Fellowships in Environmental Law program is designed to encourage minority law students to study and pursue careers in environmental law and is open to first and second year law students and third year night students. The Fellowship guidelines require an 8-10 week minimum commitment wherein the recipient will work on legal matters for a government agency or public interest organization in the fields of environmental, energy or resources law, with emphasis on air pollution. Additionally, each recipient will participate in meetings of the bar association’s relevant committees and be assigned a mentor to aid in his or her pursuit of a career in environmental law.
Each successful recipient will receive a $5,000 stipend in exchange for participation in the Fellowship program. It is important to note that the Fellowship is open to minority group members who are African-American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander. ABA John J. Curtin, Jr. Justice Fund
2006 Summer Legal Internship Program
The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is managed jointly by the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty and the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants. The Program will pay a $2,500 stipend to students who spend the summer months working for a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients or their advocates. The Legal Internship Program will provide much-needed legal assistance to organizations serving the under-represented and give students direct experience in a public interest forum. Through this, it aims both to help homeless clients and to encourage careers in the law which further the goals of social justice.
The ideal intern will have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and experience working with poor people or on issues affecting them. All law students are eligible, and first year law students are encouraged to apply. The intern must commit no less than eight continuous weeks between May 1 and October 1 to the program of his or her choice. Applicants must submit the attached application to the Curtin Internship Program, American Bar Association Commission on Homelessness and Poverty, 740 15th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005-1022. Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI)
Summer Internship Program
For FIRST and SECOND Year Law Students
The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) sponsors a Summer Internship Program for first and second year law students. Each summer, PILI funds dozens of internships at public interest law agencies in the Chicago metropolitan area. The program is open to law students from across the country. The stipend for 10 weeks work is $4,500.
PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced lawyers at the agencies, and provides a lunch-time educational program. The program seeks to have law students work at and learn about legal institutions serving the public interest, and to engender a life-long participation in public interest law.

Hiring is handled differently at each agency. The earlier you apply, the better your chances. Applications are due by March 31. Most organizations will hire their pili intern earlier than this date. First years must wait until December 1.
