1L Summer Opportunities

Wondering how most students spend the summer after their first year? Not sure what types of jobs are available or what the timeline is for hiring? Then you won't want to miss this program on Tuesday, January 29th at Noon, Room 590 , as second and third year students talk about what they did the summer following their first year.

MPILCC Update

Interview Schedules for MPILCC: If you bid on interviews at MPILCC, an email will be sent to you on Friday, January 18 inviting you to return to the MPILCC Symplicity account to see if you received any interviews. (Click the MPILCC Interviewing tab, then click the Scheduled Interviews tab).  If you were selected as an alternate, you will see that status on the Employers/Bidding page).  For more details on how the Alternate Sign Ups work, go to MPILCC.org and check out the information under the Conference tab.  You may also cancel any interviews you received via the Symplicity system until January 23, at noon – cancellations will not be accepted after that time.

MPILCC Mock Interviews: If you receive an interview at MPILCC, or you plan to try to receive an interview at MPILCC on the day of the conference (which you can do by showing up very early to get a number, then signing up for an interview slot that day of those that do not attend), then it is a very good idea to practice your interview skills! An interview consultant will be at Chicago-Kent in the Career Services Office to help students attending MPILCC on Monday, January 28 from 2-6pm, Tuesday, January 29 from 9-2:30 and Thursday, January 31, 11-2:30. These slots are for students attending MPILCC ONLY, we will have additional mock interview slots later in the semester for all who would like to practice their interview technique. Sign-ups for these slots will begin on Wednesday, January 23 at 3pm, at the Finding a Public Interest Job through the Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference program.

Defending the Damned

The ACS will present a panel discussion and book signing with Kevin Davis, author of Defending the Damned and Cook County Assistant Public Defenders Woodward Jordan, Ruth McBeth, Marijane Placek and Robert Strunck. Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 4:00 PM, 10th Floor Event Room.

From Publishers Weekly:
A colorful lawyer and a cop killing are at the center of this skillfully crafted narrative look at the Murder Task Force of Chicago's public defender's office. A veteran crime reporter, Davis focuses on the case of Aloysius Oliver, a 26-year-old ex-convict charged with fatally shooting undercover police officer Eric Lee. In sharp journalistic prose, Davis portrays a variety of public defenders driven by idealism, ambition and the excitement of legal battles. Davis ably captures the drama of the courtroom and makes a powerful case for the necessity of the often unpopular public defenders within the criminal justice system, conveying their dedication to obtaining justice for their clients.

Fellowships & Scholarships

Berman Arts Award

Chicago-Kent alumnus Ronald M. Berman, Class of 1987, has established an award for a Chicago-Kent College of Law student who is interested in art, working with or representing not-for-profit arts organizations, or representing artists.

The purpose of the Berman Arts Award is to expose law to artists and the way they are trained, thus giving students a unique perspective as they enter the legal profession to represent and work with artists and arts organizations. The Berman Arts Award will provide up to $2,000 toward tuition and related costs for a Chicago-Kent College of Law student to attend a 2008 summer studio workshop the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado.  The Anderson Ranch Arts Center offers more than 130 summer workshops taught by today’s most prominent artists and educators who come to share their skills and experience with more than 1,200 participants.  There are workshops for artists of all skill levels and experience from the novice to the professional studio artist.  See http://www.andersonranch.org/ for more information about the Anderson Ranch Arts Center and details concerning the workshops offered during the summer of 2008.

Students with interest in art, working for or representing not for profit arts organizations, or representing artists and their legal needs (i.e. corporate, intellectual property issues) may apply for this unusual opportunity by submitting a curriculum vitae to Elizabeth Turley, Assistant Dean for Institutional Advancement, Room 310 on or before March 15, 2008.  Need is not a criteria for this award.

Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Summer Grants

Each year, PILI offers over 40 public interest law internships that provide excellent legal training and experience for first or second  year law students.  Interns work at one of PILI's affiliated public interest law agencies in Chicago.  PILI raises the money to fund the internships and then issues grants to its eligible host agencies.  The agencies, in turn, pay their Interns directly.   PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced lawyers at its agencies, and provides a lunch-time educational seminar program.  The Internship program encourages law students to work at --and learn about-- legal institutions that serve the public interest, and engenders a life-long commitment to public interest law and pro bono work.

PILI sponsors a Summer Internship Program for first and second year law students.  The Summer Internship program is open to law students from across the country. Each summer, PILI funds dozens of internships at public interest law agencies in the Chicago metropolitan area. Agencies hosting Summer Interns receive $5,000 to pay an Intern for 10 full-time weeks of work.

2Ls may apply starting October 15th, 1Ls may apply beginning December 1st. For more information on how to apply, visit http://pili-law.org/HowtoApplyforInternships.htm.
