AFL-CIO’s LCC Minority Outreach Program Summer Clerkships

The AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee (LCC), a network of union-side attorneys representing AFL affiliated unions, invites applications for its LCC Minority Outreach (Summer Clerkship) Program. The Program seeks to introduce students of color to the practice of law in the labor movement and to encourage them to join the ranks of the union-side attorneys in their on-going battle for social and economic justice. Students typically deal with issues arising under a wide range of labor and employment laws including the National Labor Relations Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Americans with Disabilities Act, Employees Retirement Income Security Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. In recent years students have also gained exposure to a variety of immigration related issues.

Opportunities are available with the following organizations: Cornfield & Feldman (Chicago, IL); Leonard Carder LLP (Oakland, CA); Schwartz Steinsapir Dohrmann & Sommers (Los Angeles, CA); AFSCME (Washington, DC); American Federation of Teachers – Legal Dept (Washington, DC); and Bredhoff & Kaiser (Washington, DC). Students hired by these organizations also participate in the LLC Law Clerk Networking Conference, which features workshops and presentations on labor law practice, union organizing and representation, politics and legislation.

Each job is listed individually in the Career Office’s Symplicity Job Posting System under the position title of LCC MOP Summer Clerkship. Students should apply directly to the firms/organizations they're interested in, and mention the MOP in their cover letters. Positions are open until filled. Questions about the program itself, should be directed to Ana Avendano at aavendan@aflcio.org or 202-637-3949.

Job Fairs

IMPORTANT UPDATE: 2008 Patent Law Interview Program Registration

Due to technical difficulties experienced by Loyola University Chicago Law School, they have revised the registration process for the 2008 Patent Law Interview Program.  Registration will no longer be available on-line.  Due to this change, the registration time period has been extended to March 25, 2008.  All necessary registration forms are now available in Chicago-Kent’s Career Services Office.  The registration fee has also been reduced to $35 and must be paid by check at the time registration forms are submitted to the CSO.  All questions should be directed to Chicago-Kent’s Patent Job Fair liaison, Jeanne Kraft, Assistant Dean, Career Services at jkraft@kentlaw.edu.

The 2008 Patent Law Interview Program, coordinated by Loyola University Chicago Law School and open to law students nationwide, will be held this summer on July 31st and August 1st at the Chicago Marriott Suites O’Hare (Rosemont, IL).  This job fair draws Intellectual Property employers from around the country.  Last year approximately 150 patent law employers participated.  All law students with engineering and/or technical science academic backgrounds who will be returning to law school in the Fall of 2008 (current 1Ls and 2Ls and students in LLM Intellectual Property programs) are eligible to participate and should be sure to take advantage of this interviewing opportunity.

On-Campus Interviews

Mandatory Fall On-Campus Interview (OCI) Orientation

Monday, April 7th:   3:00 – 4:00 pm in Auditorium
Tuesday, April 8th:   Noon – 1:00 pm in Room 590;   5:00 – 5:45 pm in Room C50

(Students only need to attend one of the program times.)

During August and September, legal employers will either visit our campus to interview students or request resumes from students for summer associate and entry-level attorney positions. A member of the CSO will discuss the on-campus interview process, what types of employers participate, how to contact employers directly, what to do if you do not meet a particular employer's hiring criteria, and how to prepare over the summer.  This years OCI program will begin on August 18th through September 10th.  Since interviews will begin before classes start, it is imperative that students understand the requirements and deadlines for participation, which will be discussed at the program.

In addition, the information provided will assist students participating in the Patent Law Interview Program, Cook County Bar Association Minority Job Fair, and other interviewing opportunities.

This program is MANDATORY for all first-time OCI participants.  1L Day students and 1L Evening students who plan to switch to the day program next year and graduate in May 2010 must attend one of these programs in order to participate in the fall OCI program.   2L Day/Evening & 3L Evening students who have not previously participated but intend to next year must also attend.

Please note: If you plan to graduate in May 2009 or December 2008 and are interested in working for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office after graduation, you must participate in OCI and register for an on-campus interview with their office in order to be considered for employment.
