Interested students should submit resume to kentcso@kentlaw.edu by Monday, July 27, 2009 with "CSO Position" in the email subject line. Please also indicate approximate days and hours of availability during the fall semester. Please note that work-study eligibility is a requirement.

CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!

The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. On-Campus Interviews

Save the Date: Mandatory OCI Meeting on July 28, offered at Noon and 5:15pm

On July 28th, the CSO will host a mandatory OCI Program at Noon and 5:15pm in the Auditorium to discuss the process of bidding in greater detail and answer any questions that students may have about the Fall Interview Program. Please contact kentcso@kentlaw.edu if you cannot attend either session.

Resume Review for OCI Begins July 1

Resume review for OCI begins July 1.  The deadline for OCI resume review is noon on July 29.  However, it is in your best interest to have your resume reviewed well before the deadline to ensure that there is sufficient time to revise your resume and upload it onto the system.  If you wait until the last minute to submit your resume for review, your assigned counselor will not be able to devote as much time to your resume.  If you have questions about the resume review process, incuding whther you are one of the students required to do an in-office resume review, please contact your counselor. If you do not yet know who your assigned counselor is, please email kentcso@kentlaw.edu.

Preliminary Employer Lists Available on Symplicity July 1

Starting July 1, students will be able to view the preliminary list of employers participating in the 2009 fall OCI program and their hiring criteria.  Please remember that if you are within 10% of an employer's stated class rank there is a process by which you may submit a paper copy of your resume to be given to that employer. Please review the OCI materials on the CSO website and plan on attending the mandatory OCI Program on July 28 (held at noon and 5:15pm in the Auditorium) for further information on this process. Please note: employers are sometimes late in signing up to participate in OCI, so be sure to regularly check Symplicity, the CSO website and the Record for updates.

Registration for OCI on Symplicity begins July 27, but you should take time in July to research employers on the lists as well as employers who are not on the list. The NALP Directory (www.nalpdirectory.com) is a good starting point for identifying firms across the nation that have summer associate programs. You should apply directly to firms that are not participating in Fall Recruiting at Kent, and in the current economic climate, you should consider applying to firms and other employers in other geographic areas. Please consider scheduling an appointment with your counselor in July to discuss a strategy for approaching the Fall Recruiting process. All rising 2L and 3L students will be required to have a meeting with their counselors before mid-October 2009, and for those interested in large firms or larger government agencies, meeting in July or August to discuss Fall recruiting counts towards that mandatory counseling appointment.

Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Staff law clerks work in a highly collegial environment with recent law school graduates and lawyers coming from the nation's top law schools, as well as with more experienced supervisory attorneys. Staff law clerks learn a wide variety of substantive and practical lawyering and writing skills through discussions with the judges and other staff law clerks.

Staff law clerkships comine the intellectual rigor of a chambers clerkship with the benefits of working closely with all the judges of the Seventh Circuit, one of the most highly respected appeals courts in the country, on all phases of appellate litigation. Like traditional chambers clerks, the staff law clerks at the Seventh Circuit perfrom legal research, prepare bench memoranda and draft merits opinions on a broad spectrum of federal cases subject to oral argument at the Court.

In addition to receiving the type of work typical of chambers clerkships, staff law clerks work with all the judges of the entire Court rather than a single judge. They also assist the judges in resolving substantive motions that address complex questions of civil procedure or seek preliminary or emergency relief. Finally staff law clerks assist three-judge panels in weekly deliberative conferences on cases not subject to oral argument.

Urban Debate Advocacy Fellowship for Recent Graduates

The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL), the national leadership organization of the urban debate movement, seeks to facilitate participation in organized debate activities for as many urban students as possible. Urban students of color and women with great creativity and potential for future careers in the law unfortunately face many challenges in learning the communication and academic skills they need to enter law school and start legal careers. To counter these challenges, many firms have turned to academic debate in urban schools as an effective mechanism to open a larger, more diverse pipeline of students who are interested in, and well-prepared for, law school and legal practice.

NAUDL is offering a pro bono public interest fellowship to 3Ls and recent law school graduates whose firms are deferring their start dates. Associates who are deferring their start dates can make a valuable contribution in the interim to the NAUDL and urban debate.

The Urban Debate Advocacy Fellow will provide legal advice and assistance to local Urban Debate Leagues (UDLs), run legal education seminars with UDL students, prepare submissions to federal and local governments on matters of public interest, and conduct other legal work, including drafting documents. The pro bono fellows will focus on legal research and writing, advocacy, non-profit governance issues, and policy development, and will be helping to bring debate to thousands of additional students nationwide. The length of the fellowship can vary with availability, ranging from several months to an entire year.

If interested in becoming an Urban Debate Advocacy Fellow, please contact Eric Tucker at the NAUDL at EricTucker@urbandebate.org or 312-427-0152.

Additional Resources and Potential Opportunities for Recent Graduates

Lexis/Nexis has announced the launch of its Associates Serving Public Interests Research (ASPIRE) Program. ASPIRE has been designed to provide complimentary access to LexisNexis services to 2009 law school graduates, in response to the increasing trend of deferring fall associates' start dates. Any 2009 graduate pursuing verifiable public service (non-profit or charitable) work is eligible for this program. This includes:

  • Deferred fall associates pursuing public interest work during their deferral periods;
  • 2009 graduates who elect to pursue public interest work while searching for law firm employment, and
  • Those 2009 graduates who pursue public interest work as a continuing profession.

Complimentary Lexis/Nexis access will be provided throughout these graduates' public interest employment periods, up until September 2010 maximum. To join ASPIRE, please click here.

LexisNexis will also provide access to public interest and pro-bono opportunities through its Career Center for legal professionals. To access the Martindale-Hubbell Career Center, graduates may visit www.martindale.com/careercenter. Public interest organizations can post opportunities on the site free of charge.

Delaware Minority Job Fair for Second & Third-Year Law Students

As part of an effort to recruit talented students and increase diversity in the Delaware Bar, a number of law firms, corporations, and governmental legal employers will participate in the Delaware Minority Job Fair for Second & Third-Year Law Students, which is being held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 on the Wilmington campus of Widener University School of Law. This job fair is by invitation only and is limited to students who are in their second or third year of law school during the 2008-2009 school year and interested in employment opportunities in Delaware. The Delaware Minority Job Fair differs from many other job fairs in that students must be invited to attend rather than simply registering and attending. In return, the students invited receive considerable more individual attention than is possible in a very large job fair. When you submit an application for invitation, you are, in effect, submitting an application to all of the Delaware legal employers who participate in the program. To become eligible by an invitation you must complete the application form, which is available in the career services office as handout #50, and return it via mail, fax or email, along with your resume and college and law school transcripts (if available), no later than Tuesday, April 21, 2009.You will be eligible for an invitation if two or more of the Job Fair employers wish to meet with you. Invitations enclosing a proposed interview schedule will be sent by mid-June. Your response, accepting or declining the invitation, will be due by Tuesday, June 30, 2009.There are no application or registration fees. If you are invited you will need to arrange for your own transportation to Wilmington. The organizers of the job fair hope to be able to reimburse you for all or at least a portion of your transportation expenses. They have historically been able to reimburse 100% of such expenses. A breakfast will be provided to all invited students. A number of experienced attorneys and leaders from the Delaware Bench and Bar will join students for breakfast to answer any questions you might have about life and the practice of law in Delaware.
