The Career Services Office seeks part-time student workers for the fall 2009 semester (any year student eligible). Flexible hours, though preference is for 10-20 hours per week. Duties will include data entry and maintenance of active job postings; ordering/upkeep of resources; scheduling appointments; answering phones; front desk reception work; and some web-page maintenance.
Interested students should submit resumes to kentcso@kentlaw.edu by Monday, August 17, 2009 with "CSO Position" in the email subject line. Please also indicate approximate days and hours of availability during the fall semester, as well as work-study eligibility status. Please note that work-study eligibility is a requirement.

CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!
The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. Please call our office at 312-906-5200 or email kentcso@kentlaw.edu for the username and password. On-Campus Interviews
Mock Interviews for Fall Recruiting
Our office will be conducting Mock Interviews the week of August 10-15 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Sign-ups for mock interviews will begin on July 27. If you are interested in scheduling a mock interview to prepare for the Fall Interview Program, please email kentcso@kentlaw.edu with your availability, stop by Suite 360 or call the office at (312) 906-5200 to schedule. Sign-up sheets will also be available at the Mandatory OCI Program at noon and 5:15 pm on July 28.
July 28 : Mandatory OCI Meeting, Offered at Noon and 5:15pm
On July 28th, the CSO will host a mandatory OCI Program at Noon and 5:15pm in the Auditorium to discuss the process of bidding in greater detail and answer any questions that students may have about the Fall Interview Program. Please contact kentcso@kentlaw.edu if you cannot attend either session.
July 29: Deadline for Resume Review for OCI
Resume review for OCI begins July 1. The deadline for OCI resume review is noon on July 29. However, it is in your best interest to have your resume reviewed well before the deadline to ensure that there is sufficient time to revise your resume and upload it onto the system. If you wait until the last minute to submit your resume for review, your assigned counselor will not be able to devote as much time to your resume. If you have questions about the resume review process, incuding whther you are one of the students required to do an in-office resume review, please contact your counselor. If you do not yet know who your assigned counselor is, please email kentcso@kentlaw.edu.
Preliminary Employer Lists Are Now Available on Symplicity
Students are now able to view the preliminary list of employers participating in the 2009 fall OCI program and their hiring criteria. Please remember that if you are within 10% of an employer's stated class rank there is a process by which you may submit a paper copy of your resume to be given to that employer. Please review the OCI materials on the CSO website and plan on attending the mandatory OCI Program on July 28 (held at noon and 5:15pm in the Auditorium) for further information on this process. Please note: employers are sometimes late in signing up to participate in OCI, so be sure to regularly check Symplicity, the CSO website and the Record for updates.
Registration for OCI on Symplicity begins July 27, but you should take time in July to research employers on the lists as well as employers who are not on the list. The NALP Directory (www.nalpdirectory.com) is a good starting point for identifying firms across the nation that have summer associate programs. You should apply directly to firms that are not participating in Fall Recruiting at Kent, and in the current economic climate, you should consider applying to firms and other employers in other geographic areas. Please consider scheduling an appointment with your counselor in July to discuss a strategy for approaching the Fall Recruiting process. All rising 2L and 3L students will be required to have a meeting with their counselors before mid-October 2009, and for those interested in large firms or larger government agencies, meeting in July or August to discuss Fall recruiting counts towards that mandatory counseling appointment.
Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!
If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so. Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.). We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation. Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Staff law clerks learn a wide variety of substantive and practical lawyering and writing skills through discussions with the judges and other staff law clerks.
Staff law clerkships comine the intellectual rigor of a chambers clerkship with the benefits of working closely with all the judges of the Seventh Circuit, one of the most highly respected appeals courts in the country, on all phases of appellate litigation. Like traditional chambers clerks, the staff law clerks at the Seventh Circuit perfrom legal research, prepare bench memoranda and draft merits opinions on a broad spectrum of federal cases subject to oral argument at the Court.
In addition to receiving the type of work typical of chambers clerkships, staff law clerks work with all the judges of the entire Court rather than a single judge. They also assist the judges in resolving substantive motions that address complex questions of civil procedure or seek preliminary or emergency relief. Finally staff law clerks assist three-judge panels in weekly deliberative conferences on cases not subject to oral argument.

Urban Debate Advocacy Fellowship for Recent Graduates
The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL), the national leadership organization of the urban debate movement, seeks to facilitate participation in organized debate activities for as many urban students as possible. Urban students of color and women with great creativity and potential for future careers in the law unfortunately face many challenges in learning the communication and academic skills they need to enter law school and start legal careers. To counter these challenges, many firms have turned to academic debate in urban schools as an effective mechanism to open a larger, more diverse pipeline of students who are interested in, and well-prepared for, law school and legal practice.
NAUDL is offering a pro bono public interest fellowship to 3Ls and recent law school graduates whose firms are deferring their start dates. Associates who are deferring their start dates can make a valuable contribution in the interim to the NAUDL and urban debate.
The Urban Debate Advocacy Fellow will provide legal advice and assistance to local Urban Debate Leagues (UDLs), run legal education seminars with UDL students, prepare submissions to federal and local governments on matters of public interest, and conduct other legal work, including drafting documents. The pro bono fellows will focus on legal research and writing, advocacy, non-profit governance issues, and policy development, and will be helping to bring debate to thousands of additional students nationwide. The length of the fellowship can vary with availability, ranging from several months to an entire year.
If interested in becoming an Urban Debate Advocacy Fellow, please contact Eric Tucker at the NAUDL at EricTucker@urbandebate.org or 312-427-0152.

Job Fairs
Update on Cook County Bar Association (CCBA) Minority Law Student Job Fair
Date: August 21, 2009
Location: Embassy Suites Chicago - Downtown/Lakefront
511 North Columbus Drive
Preliminary interview schedules for the CCBA job fair are now available. Please note that although the CCBA experienced temporary technical difficulties which prevented students from being able to access their interview schedules, that problem has now been resolved.
The CCBA Job Fair was extremely competitive this year due to the tight job market and the economy. In the 2009 CCBA Job Fair session, 773 students placed exactly 10985 bids for 91 employer interview schedules. Each employer has only 16 interviews on each schedule, which = 1456 interviews. Under these circumstances, it is highly likely that even the most impressive students could be left without any interviews. This is especially true for 3L registrants.
If your account still displays the message - "no records found" - on your Scheduled Interviews tab, then you, in fact, did not receive any interviews. All technological problems have been resolved. Students still have the opportunity to pick up additional interviews by utilizing the Supplemental Interview Selection Form through next Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Drops, adds, and cancellations will be processed through Friday, July 31, 2009. Students can decide if they would rather wait to see if they are awarded any interviews, or they can choose to cancel their registration in the CCBA Job Fair and drop out.
If you are no longer able to attend the CCBA Job Fair on August 21, 2009, please make sure to send the CCBA an email with the words "Drop Out" in the subject line. Your law school liaison is Elsa "Yadi" Trujillo. If you have registered for the CCBA job fair and do not yet have a copy of the Law Student Registration Information Brochure, please contact Yadi and she will forward it to you. Because you will receive information from the CCBA and your liaison via email, it is critical that registered students check their email regularly. Please review the Law Student Registration Information Brochure or visit the CCBA Job Fair website (www.ccbaminorityjobfair.com), for additional information.
