On-Campus Interviews

April 20 and 21: Mandatory Fall On-Campus Interview (OCI) Orientation

Tuesday, April 20th: 12:00 - 1:00pm in Auditorium
Wednesday, April 21st: 5:00 - 6:00pm in C50
(Students need only attend one of the program times.)

During August and September, legal employers will either visit our campus to interview students or request resumes from students for summer associate and entry-level attorney positions. A member of the CSO will discuss the on-campus interview process, what types of employers participate, how to contact employers directly, what to do if you do not meet a particular employer's hiring criteria, and how to prepare over the summer. This year’s OCI program will begin August 16th.  Since interviews will begin before classes start, it is imperative that students understand the requirements and deadlines for participation, which will be discussed at the program.

In addition, the information provided will assist students participating in the Patent Law Interview Program, Cook County Bar Association Minority Job Fair, and other interviewing opportunities.

This program is MANDATORY for all first-time OCI participants.  1L Day students and 1L Evening students who plan to switch to the day program next year and graduate in May 2012 must attend one of these programs in order to participate in the fall OCI program.   2L Day/Evening & 3L Evening students who have not previously participated but intend to next year must also attend.

Please note: If you plan to graduate in May 2011 or December 2010 and are interested in working for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office after graduation, you must participate in OCI and register for an on-campus interview with their office in order to be considered for employment.

Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Institute for Justice Summer Law Clerk Program

Institute for Justice (IJ) summer law clerks participate in IJ’s fast-paced litigation docket, including legal research, brief writing, client interviewing, and op-ed writing.  IJ is currently saving a non-profit boxing gym in California from being bulldozed for private profit.  On the east coast, IJ is cutting through Boston’s anti-competitive regulatory maze so an entrepreneur can begin his amphibious vehicle tour service.  The Institute is also defending Colorado citizens from an unconstitutional attack on their First Amendment rights via campaign finance regulations.  Parents in Arizona are teamed up with IJ to secure their freedom to choose the best education for their kids.  Summer clerkships are available at IJ's headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, as well as at our state chapters in Arizona, Minnesota, Texas and Washington.

Click here to find fliers advertising IJ's Summer Law Clerk Program. Students interested in IJ’s summer law student programs should also visit www.ij.org/students for more information.

Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Paid Summer Internships

Each year, PILI offers over 40 public interest law internships that provide excellent legal training and experience for first or second  year law students.  Interns work at one of PILI's affiliated public interest law agencies in Chicago.  PILI raises the money to fund the internships and then issues grants to its eligible host agencies.  The agencies, in turn, pay their Interns directly.   PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced lawyers at its agencies, and provides a lunch-time educational seminar program.  The Internship program encourages law students to work at --and learn about-- legal institutions that serve the public interest, and engenders a life-long commitment to public interest law and pro bono work.

PILI sponsors a Summer Internship Program for first and second year law students.  The Summer Internship program is open to law students from across the country. Each summer, PILI funds dozens of internships at public interest law agencies in the Chicago metropolitan area. Agencies hosting Summer Interns receive $5,000 to pay an Intern for 10 full-time weeks of work.

1st and 2nd Year students may apply beginning December 1st. For more information on how to apply, visit http://pili-law.org/HowtoApplyforInternships.htm.

Washington D.D. Area Job Fair for Law Students of Color
Thursday, August 26, 2010
Renaissance Mayflower Hotel
1127 Connecticut Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

The Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is a consortium of over 40 of the largest law firms, government agencies, and corporations in Boston. Its mission is to promote the hiring, retention, and professional development of attorneys of color in its member organizations. A primary goal of the BLG is to increase the number of law students of color that member organizations hire for their Boston office. One of the significant ways in which this goal is accomplished, is through member participation in the annual BLG Job Fairs in Boston and D.C.

Employers who participate in either job fair hire for positions in their Boston office. Employers will interview rising second-year law students for 2011 summer associate/law clerk positions, and in a very limited number of cases employers will interview third-year law students for Fall 2011 first year associate positions. Students who have been selected for one or more interviews can potentially obtain additional interviews through the lottery selection process.

To be eligible to participate in the job fairs, students must be entering their second or third year of law school in the Fall of 2010. Student registration begins April 1, 2010 and ends at midnight on July 12, 2010. Students can register for only one fair. Please note that students are not allowed to bid, instead, participating BLG Members select the students they wish to interview. To register, please click here. It is strongly encouraged that you visit the BLG website for details on the registration process, eligibilty requirements, frequently asked questions, and additional job fair-related activities.

National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair

The goal of the National Black Prosecutors Association's (NBPA) Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutor's offices. The Job fair will provide a unique forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels. This year's job fair will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, California. The job fair is being held in conjunction with the NBPA Annual Conference, which is being held July 18-July 24.

At the culmination of the job fair, there will be a reception for all job fair participants and convention attendees. The reception will afford job fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. The early registration fee for the job fair is $25 for law students and 2010 law school graduates and $50 for experienced attorneys. After April 16, the registration fee will go up to $50 for law students and 2010 law school graudates and $75 for experienced attorneys.

In addition to the job fair reception, all job fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled "Strategies for a Successful Interview." The seminar will take place on Monday, July 19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins and will provide job fair participants with effective interviewing tips.

Job fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference. Students and 2010 law school graduates are invited to attend conference seminars for free. However, other events such as luncheons, dinners and receptions must be paid for separately.

For additional information, a list of previous participating employers, and instructions on how to register for the job fair, please visit www.blackprosecutors.org and click on the "Annual Conference" tab and then click on the "student job fair registration form" link. Along with a registration form and payment, you must also submit your resume. Registration closes on July 6, 2010. If you have any questions, please contact Audrey Moore, NBPA Job Fair Coordinator at 212-335-4205 or moorea@dany.nyc.gov.

The InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel has extended a special room rate to students of $99/night for a single or double room and $129 for a triple room for July 19 and July 20. To make reservations, interviewees should call the hotel at 415-392-3434. Please note that the hotel will not accept reservations under the NBPA conference block of rooms at the discounted rate until you are a registered job fair participant; therefore job fair participants must register for the job fair prior to making hotel reservations.
