Fellowships & Scholarships

Minority Law Fellowships in Criminal Defense

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is seeking up to three (3) Minority Law Fellows to spend up to eight (8) weeks working in a criminal defense law practice.  The purpose of the fellowship is to increase diversity in the criminal defense bar by giving underrepresented populations an opportunity to gain experience in a criminal defense law practice.

Fellows will be matched with NACDL members, exceptional, experienced criminal defense attorneys, in either Washington, DC or New York City.  Fellows will actively intern in the assigned criminal defense law office and will be invited to participate in NACDL events and networking opportunities throughout the summer.  Fellows should be law students with a strong, demonstrable interest in criminal defense.  Fellows will receive a weekly stipend of $500.

Interested applicants should send a resume, cover letter, and writing sample via email to Malia Brink, Counsel for Special Projects at Malia@nacdl.org. Applictions will be reviewed beginning April 21, 2010.

About NACDL:

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), and its not-for-profit affiliate, the Foundation for Criminal Justice, are located in the heart of the nation’s capital.  NACDL is the preeminent organization advancing the mission of the criminal defense bar to ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime or wrongdoing. It is a professional bar association with a direct membership of 11,000 and an additional 35,000 affiliates from every state and many nations.  NACDL’s mission is to: Ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime ... Foster the integrity, independence and expertise of the criminal defense profession ... Promote the proper and fair administration of criminal justice … Advocate for a rational and humane criminal justice system.

One of NACDL’s goals is to increase the number of young lawyers, women, and people of color practicing criminal defense.  A disproportionate number of criminal defendants come from minority communities.  It is, therefore, imperative that criminal defense attorneys be able to move our criminal justice system towards a better understanding of language, culture, customs, and economic conditions that correspond to our clients.  By attracting more diverse members to the criminal defense bar, we will increase the likelihood that our clients’ racial, ethnic, and personally diverse histories will be explained and portrayed more accurately to prosecutors, juries and judges because those diverse attorneys can teach what they already understand about what it means to be diverse in a majority society.

To learn more about NACDL's programs and projects, please visit www.nacdl.org.

When you register, you will be asked to designate your law school job fair liaison and provide their correct email address. Your job fair liaison is Elsa "Yadi" Trujillo and her email address is etrujillo@kentlaw.edu. If you have any questions regarding the job fair, please contact Yadi. Delaware Minority Job Fair for Second & Third-Year Law Students

As part of an effort to recruit talented students and increase diversity in the Delaware Bar, a number of law firms, corporations, and governmental legal employers will participate in the Delaware Minority Job Fair for Second & Third-Year Law Students, which is being held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 on the Wilmington campus of Widener University School of Law. This job fair is by invitation only and is limited to students who are in their second or third year of law school during the 2010-2011 school year and interested in employment opportunities in Delaware.

The Delaware Minority Job Fair differs from many other job fairs in that students must be invited to attend rather than simply registering and attending. In return, the students invited receive considerable more individual attention than is possible in a very large job fair. When you submit an application for invitation, you are, in effect, submitting an application to all of the Delaware legal employers who participate in the program.

To become eligible by an invitation you must complete the application form, which is available in the career services office as handout #50, and return it via mail, fax or email, along with your resume and college and law school transcripts, no later than Wednesday, April 28, 2010.

You will be eligible for an invitation if two or more of the Job Fair employers wish to meet with you. Invitations enclosing a proposed interview schedule will be sent by mid-June. Your response, accepting or declining the invitation, will be due by Tuesday, July 6, 2010.

There are no application or registration fees. If you are invited you will need to arrange for your own transportation to Wilmington. The organizers of the job fair hope to be able to reimburse you for all or at least a portion of your transportation expenses. They have historically been able to reimburse 100% of such expenses. A breakfast will be provided to all invited students. A number of experienced attorneys and leaders from the Delaware Bench and Bar will join students for breakfast to answer any questions you might have about life and the practice of law in Delaware.

The Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is a consortium of over 40 of the largest law firms, government agencies, and corporations in Boston. Its mission is to promote the hiring, retention, and professional development of attorneys of color in its member organizations. A primary goal of the BLG is to increase the number of law students of color that member organizations hire for their Boston office. One of the significant ways in which this goal is accomplished, is through member participation in the annual BLG Job Fairs in Boston and D.C.

Employers who participate in either job fair hire for positions in their Boston office. Employers will interview rising second-year law students for 2011 summer associate/law clerk positions, and in a very limited number of cases employers will interview third-year law students for Fall 2011 first year associate positions. Students who have been selected for one or more interviews can potentially obtain additional interviews through the lottery selection process.

To be eligible to participate in the job fairs, students must be entering their second or third year of law school in the Fall of 2010. Student registration begins April 1, 2010 and ends at midnight on July 12, 2010. Students can register for only one fair. Please note that students are not allowed to bid, instead, participating BLG Members select the students they wish to interview. To register, please click here. It is strongly encouraged that you visit the BLG website for details on the registration process, eligibilty requirements, frequently asked questions, and additional job fair-related activities.

National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair

The goal of the National Black Prosecutors Association's (NBPA) Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutor's offices. The Job fair will provide a unique forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels. This year's job fair will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, California. The job fair is being held in conjunction with the NBPA Annual Conference, which is being held July 18-July 24.

At the culmination of the job fair, there will be a reception for all job fair participants and convention attendees. The reception will afford job fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. The early registration fee for the job fair is $25 for law students and 2010 law school graduates and $50 for experienced attorneys. After April 16, the registration fee will go up to $50 for law students and 2010 law school graudates and $75 for experienced attorneys.

In addition to the job fair reception, all job fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled "Strategies for a Successful Interview." The seminar will take place on Monday, July 19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins and will provide job fair participants with effective interviewing tips.

Job fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference. Students and 2010 law school graduates are invited to attend conference seminars for free. However, other events such as luncheons, dinners and receptions must be paid for separately.

For additional information, a list of previous participating employers, and instructions on how to register for the job fair, please visit www.blackprosecutors.org and click on the "Annual Conference" tab and then click on the "student job fair registration form" link. Along with a registration form and payment, you must also submit your resume. Registration closes on July 6, 2010. If you have any questions, please contact Audrey Moore, NBPA Job Fair Coordinator at 212-335-4205 or moorea@dany.nyc.gov.

The InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel has extended a special room rate to students of $99/night for a single or double room and $129 for a triple room for July 19 and July 20. To make reservations, interviewees should call the hotel at 415-392-3434. Please note that the hotel will not accept reservations under the NBPA conference block of rooms at the discounted rate until you are a registered job fair participant; therefore job fair participants must register for the job fair prior to making hotel reservations.
