CSO Information & Announcements
CSO Seeks Student Worker
The Career Services Office seeks a student worker for summer 2010. Flexible hours, though preference is for 20 hours per week. Duties will include data entry and maintenance of active job postings; ordering/upkeep of resources; scheduling appointments; answering phones; front desk reception work; and some web-page maintenance.
Interested students should submit resumes to email@example.com by Tuesday, June 1, 2010 with "CSO Position" in the email subject line. Please also indicate approximate days and hours of availability.
Please note that although work study eligibility is not required for the summer, it will be required in the event the student worker would like to continue working in the CSO during the fall semester.
CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!
The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. Fall Recruiting Resume Review Reminder
As a reminder, all first-time Fall Recruiting program participants must have a resume review by a Career Advisor. If you have already had your resume reviewed during the 2009-2010 school year, this can be done via email. If you have not already had your resume reviewed by a CSO Career Advisor, you must make an appointment. Students who participated in the program last year are not required to have a resume review, but are encouraged to do so. Call the office at (312) 906-5200 to schedule an appointment. OCI resume reviews end at noon, Wednesday, July 28. All resumes must be reviewed and uploaded into Symplicity by noon on July 28. We advise sending your resume via email or making an appointment in June or early July, as appointments tend to fill up fast later in the summer.

If you are in town this summer, and are considering participating in Fall Recruiting, please plan on coming to our “Meet the Employers” reception on the evening of Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Firm, corporate and government employers from the city of Chicago who are participating in Fall Recruiting this year or who have participated in years past will be available for networking and to answer your questions before the bidding deadline on August 6. The reception will be held in the Event Room of the law school from 5pm-7pm. Please RSVP to Kentcso@kentlaw.edu so that we have sufficient food and beverages for everyone.
Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!
If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to email@example.com every couple weeks or so. Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.). We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation. Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

WealthCounsel Estate Planning Symposium

WealthCounsel, a national organization of over 2,000 estate planning attorneys will be conducting a live estate planning symposium in Chicago, August 10-13, 2010. The symposium offers three days of practical estate planning education, including many essential estate planning topics which would be of tremendous interest to law students. WealthCounsel would like to offer Chicago-Kent faculty and students who may be considering careers in estate planning a very special professional development opportunity. Students may audit these courses for only $75 per day (just $200 for the entire symposium) and network with experienced attorneys to advance their understanding of estate planning strategies, concepts, and client relationships. The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts'
47th Annual Conference
Students are invited to attend the Assocation of Family and Conciliation Courts' 47th Annual Conference, titled Traversing the Trail of Alienation: Rocky Relationships, Mountains of Emotion, Mile High Conflict, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown, June 2-5, 2010. The program features 90 sessions, including four plenary sessions and six all-day pre-conference institutes, on topics from alienation to negotiaton, research to practice or domestic abuse to child abuse and neglect.
Registration is available at a reduced rate, more than 40 conference scholarships are available, and students who attend will be paired with a mentor/experienced practitioner for ongoing mentoring. Federal Work Study at Community-Based Organizations
Available in Summer 2010
Chicago-Kent is launching a “pilot” program for the Summer 2010, through which Chicago-Kent 1L and 2L students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school. In our first semester of the program, nineteen students worked at government and non-profit agencies such as the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian, the Chicago Legal Clinic, among others. Additional government and non-profit organizations are also expected to join this summer. This is a unique opportunity to be paid for your work at a government or non-profit agency. A limited amount of funds are available, and students who have a federal work study allotment must secure their job placement, please visit the Career Service Office’s webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate.

Sidley Austin Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship
Sidley Austin is launching a Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship Initiative for Second Year Law Students. Please note that candidates must both apply for the scholarship as well as apply for a summer associate position. Sidley will grant a $15,000 Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship to a limited number of deserving second year law students who also have an offer to join Sidley's 2011 summer program.
Preference will be given to students at schools where Sidley conducts on-campus interviews (OCI) or participates in a resume collection. Students should have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership qualities as well as a demonstrated ability to contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the law school and/or legal profession.
Scholarship recipients are expected to join Sidley's 2011 summer associate program following the second year of law school and use the scholarship to defray the costs of his/her legal education. Recipients are also expected to participate in Sidley's ongoing dialogue regarding ways to improve diversity and inclusion.
How to Apply:
The application process will open on June 14, 2010 and will remain open through the Fall 2010 recruiting season. Sidley encourages students at those schools where it conducts OCI to apply before interview season and to sign up for an on-campus interview. Students attending other law schools are also encouraged to apply early. Applicants must apply for the scholarship and separately apply for a summer associate position.

Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell and Berkowitz 2010 Diversity Scholarship
Baker Donelson Bearman, Caldwell and Berkowitz is accepting applications for its 2010 Diversity Scholarship. Baker Donelson will be awarding three scholarships to diverse students this year. Candidates must have completed their first year of law school (be rising 2L students in fall 2010).
Each recipient will be awarded $10,000 which will be paid during the student's third year of law school to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses. Additionally, recipients will be awarded a salaried 2L Summer Associate position for summer 2011 in one of Baker Donelson's following offices: Birmingham, AL; Atlanta, GA; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA; Jackson, MS; or Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, TN.

Reed Smith 2010 Diverse Scholars Program
Reed Smith is pleased to present its 2010 Diverse Scholars Program. The Diverse Scholars Program provides several $10,000 awards toward tuition for the second year of law school, as well as a paid summer associate position after completion of the second year of law school. The program is open to first-year law students who have demonstrated excellent academic scholarship and a commitment to diversity, inclusion and community. Summer associate positions in 2011 are available in Chicago; Falls Church, VA; Los Angeles; San Francisco; New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh; and Washington, D.C. Institute for Justice Summer Law Clerk Program
Institute for Justice (IJ) summer law clerks participate in IJ’s fast-paced litigation docket, including legal research, brief writing, client interviewing, and op-ed writing. IJ is currently saving a non-profit boxing gym in California from being bulldozed for private profit. On the east coast, IJ is cutting through Boston’s anti-competitive regulatory maze so an entrepreneur can begin his amphibious vehicle tour service. The Institute is also defending Colorado citizens from an unconstitutional attack on their First Amendment rights via campaign finance regulations. Parents in Arizona are teamed up with IJ to secure their freedom to choose the best education for their kids. Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area: Opportunities for Volunteer Attorneys & Deferred Associates
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (LCCR), with the help of pro bono attorneys, provides free legal assistance to individuals in the areas of race, poverty, and immigration. In addition, the Lawyers' Committee handles impact cases that focus on important civil rights issues. Volunteer/deferred associates will work in one or more issue areas. Projects include:
- Educational Equity: Addresses differential access by students of color to resources in K-12 education by coordinating a program to ensure that schools, districts and superintendents comply with the Williams v. California settlement.
- African-American Agenda: Impact litigation and policy advocacy on significant issues facing the Bay Area's African-American community, including racial discrimination in housing & education, school desegregation & affirmative action.
- Voting Rights: Advocates for the rights of people of color under the California Voting Rights Act.
- Legal Services for Entrepreneurs: Provides business legal services to low-income entrepreneurs whose for-profit businesses will enhance the economic infrastructure of their neighborhoods. Free legal assistance is also provided to businesses which invest directly in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
- Legal Services Clinic: Enlists pro bono attorneys to serve low-income San Franciscans with a focus on six areas: eviction defense, public benefits issues, tort defense, debt collection, school expulsions/suspensions & non-profit counseling.
- Asylum Program: Recruits pro bono lawyers, interpreters, and mentor immigration attorneys to provide legal representation to indigent refugees fleeing persecution and torture around the globe.
- Immigrant Rights: Impact litigation and policy advocacy on behalf of immigrants and refugees, including legal challenges to unlawful arrest practices, detention conditions, and racial/ethnic profiling.
- Domestic Workers Project: Provides legal assistance, community education, and policy advocacy on behalf of domestic workers and other low wage immigrant workers experiencing exploitation.

Registration is now open for the Cook County Bar Association (CCBA) Minority Law Student Job Fair. The Cook County Bar Association's 27th Annual Minority Law Student Job Fair will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010. Students in the classes of 2011 and 2012 are invited to participate in this job fair. Students graduating in any month prior to December 2010 are not eligible to participate. Student registration begins on April 1, 2010 and each student must register and upload their resume by Monday, May 31, 2010. There will be no exceptions to the deadline and no walk ins will be allowed. It takes several days for your account to be approved and for you to be able to upload your resume, so please register ASAP and do not wait until a day or two before the deadline to register. Please note that the CCBA Job Fair is primarily designed to obtain summer positions for rising 2Ls (current 1Ls) during their second summer in law school. A limited number of employers also wish to interview rising 3L students (current 2Ls) for entry level positions. Rising 3Ls, please be aware that job fair interview slots for rising 2Ls typically outnumber those for rising 3Ls by a 3:1 ratio. Anticipated states represented by employer participants include: California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin. Hispanic National Bar Association Career Fair
The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) is pleased to open registration to the nation's largest career fair for experienced Hispanic lawyers and law students. The career fair will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday, September 10, 2010. Scores of employers will be matched with hundreds of talented job seekers.
The registration deadline is August 6, 2010. To register, click here. Early bird registration (by July 31) for law students is $175 and for lateral attorneys is $225. After July 31, the the cost of registration rises to $200 and $275 respectively. Please note that when registering, law students should designate Fall 2010 as their year in school. Once you register and have confirmed your email address, you will receive a system generated password and an invoice for your participation. 2010 Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program
The Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program offers rising second and rising third year law students the opportunity to interview for summer associate and entry-level positions with prominent regional and national employers. This year's program will be held August 20-21, 2010 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Covington, Kentucky.
A cocktail reception for all attendees will be held Friday August 20, 2010 at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The reception will begin at 6:30pm and is an excellent meet-and-greet opportunity for students to speak with participating employers.
To register, candidates must submit a resume, cover letter, transcript(s) and a completed registration form by email or standard mail to Kim Spurlock at the address contained in the registration form. Vault/MCCA Legal Diversity Career Fair
The 5th Annual Vault/MCCA Legal Diversity Career Fair will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 in Washington DC. At the job fair, rising 2L, rising 3L and lateral candidates will have the opportunity to put their resumes in front of America's top legal employers. Meet with hiring partners and recruiters from top law firms, government agencies, and general counsel during recruiting hall hours. Per NALP rules, first-year law students are not allowed to be interviewed on-site, but may attend the event to learn more about legal employers.
Candidates who register prior to May 30, 2010 will be eligible for separate pre-scheduled on-site interviews with recruiters.

Bay Area Diversity Career Fair
The annual Bay Area Diversity Career Fair will be held July 30-31, 2010 at the Hilton San Francisco Financial District. The career fair brings together prominent law firms and government legal departments in the San Francisco Bay Area with highly qualified diverse rising second-year law students. Participating students interview for coveted positions in summer associate programs.
In addition to the interviews, the fair also provides students with networking and educational opportunities. A welcome reception that includes prospective employers takes place the night before the interviews, and a breakfast panel the morning of the fair features diverse lawyers from a variety of practice areas.

The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Bar Association Annual Career Fair and Conference
The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Bar Association is a national organization of LGBT judges, lawyers, law students and other legal professionals committed to promoting diversity within the legal profession. Each year, the LGBT Bar hosts the only national career fair and legal education conference (formerly known as Lavender Law) for LGBT law students. The LGBT Bar will host the 22nd such conference on August 26-28 , 2010 in Miami, FL. The 2009 Career Fair featured 130 recruiters and over 600 students from across the country. The Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is a consortium of over 40 of the largest law firms, government agencies, and corporations in Boston. Its mission is to promote the hiring, retention, and professional development of attorneys of color in its member organizations. A primary goal of the BLG is to increase the number of law students of color that member organizations hire for their Boston office. One of the significant ways in which this goal is accomplished, is through member participation in the annual BLG Job Fairs in Boston and D.C.
Employers who participate in either job fair hire for positions in their Boston office. Employers will interview rising second-year law students for 2011 summer associate/law clerk positions, and in a very limited number of cases employers will interview third-year law students for Fall 2011 first year associate positions. Students who have been selected for one or more interviews can potentially obtain additional interviews through the lottery selection process. To be eligible to participate in the job fairs, students must be entering their second or third year of law school in the Fall of 2010.
Student registration begins April 1, 2010 and ends at midnight on July 12, 2010. Students can register for only one fair. Please note that students are not allowed to bid, instead, participating BLG Members select the students they wish to interview. To register, please click here. National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair
The goal of the National Black Prosecutors Association's (NBPA) Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutor's offices. The Job fair will provide a unique forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels. This year's job fair will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, California. The job fair is being held in conjunction with the NBPA Annual Conference, which is being held July 18-July 24. At the culmination of the job fair, there will be a reception for all job fair participants and convention attendees. The reception will afford job fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. The early registration fee for the job fair is $25 for law students and 2010 law school graduates and $50 for experienced attorneys. After April 16, the registration fee will go up to $50 for law students and 2010 law school graudates and $75 for experienced attorneys.
In addition to the job fair reception, all job fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled "Strategies for a Successful Interview." The seminar will take place on Monday, July 19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins and will provide job fair participants with effective interviewing tips. Job fair attendees are welcome to attend the entire conference. Students and 2010 law school graduates are invited to attend conference seminars for free. The InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel has extended a special room rate to students of $99/night for a single or double room and $129 for a triple room for July 19 and July 20. To make reservations, interviewees should call the hotel at 415-392-3434. Please note that the hotel will not accept reservations under the NBPA conference block of rooms at the discounted rate until you are a registered job fair participant; therefore job fair participants must register for the job fair prior to making hotel reservations.
Registration Now Open for the Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair
The Heartland Diversity Job Fair (HDLJF) will be held on August 6-7, 2010 in Kansas City Missouri at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal associations, and corporate legal departments coming together to encourage students to practice law in Kansas City. The event will kick off with registration, a diversity panel discussion and a welcome reception on Friday, August 6th at the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA) headquarters. Interviewing will begin at 8:30am on Saturday with a keynote luncheon featuring Dr. Bernard Franklin. It is recommended that students register as soon as possible after registration opens on March 22, 2010 . Students registering before May 24th will receive an extra entry into the drawing for door prizes at the keynote luncheon. The Crowne Plaza Hotel will also have a limited number of $50 hotel rooms reserved for students participating in the job fair. The final deadline for registration will be June 21, 2010. Registration Now Open for the Indianapolis Bar Association 2010 Diversity Job Fair
The Indianapolis Bar Association (IBA) cordially invites rising 2L law students (graduating in May 2012) to participate in the IBA Diversity Job Fair. The IBA is seeking candidates who are looking for a one-of-a-kind legal community in a Midwestern city that has both cosmopolitan style and small-town charm. The IBA Diversity Job Fair will be held August 19-20, 2010 at the Embassy Suites Downtown Indianapolis. Student registration opens on April 1, 2010 and there is no fee to register. Students will register for the IBA Diversity Job Fair via the job fair's Symplicity web site at https://law-indybar-csm.symplicity.com/students/. Please do not confuse the job fair's Symplicity site with your particular law school's Symplicity site and password. Once you submit your registration, an automatically-generated password will be provided, which will enable you to use the system throughout the next few months. The registration deadline is July 16, 2010.
Please note that students will be responsible for their own travel and lodging arrangements. A special rate of $169 for students will be available at the Embassy Suites Downtown Indianapolis. Access the BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank
Kent students and alumni now have an additional resource for their job searches. The BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank compiles entry level job postings from schools throughout the country. This resource will be especially useful for students and alumni conducting an out-of-town job search, but through this service you can also access the postings of other Illinois and Chicago area schools. To access this resource, log into Symplicity and select the “Documents” tab. Within Documents, select “Document Library.” The link for the Job Bank will be listed there. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with a username and password, which you should write down before clicking the link. The link takes you to the BYU Alumni page, and the Job Bank is about halfway down the page. After clicking that link you will be prompted to enter the user name and password. Then you will have access to a drop list of all 50 states. Picking a state will give you access to the job postings from the schools in that state. International Career Employment Weekly's goal is to make it easy for international professionals to keep abreast of all current job opportunities in their field.
