August 9: CSO Closed for Fall Recruiting Processing
Please be aware that the Career Services Office will be closed on Monday, August 9 for the processing of Fall Recruiting materials. Career advisers will not be available for counseling appointments on Monday. Time permitting advisers may reply to telephone and email inquiries, but responses will probably experience longer than normal delays. We appreciate your patience.
August 23: CSO Open House - Snacks and Prizes!
The Career Services Office will be hosting an Open House on August 23, outside of the 3rd Floor Cafeteria. The CSO table will be staffed continuously from 8:30am – 6:00pm. Be sure to stop by for information on CSO services, a list of upcoming CSO programs and useful handouts as well as snacks. Several lucky students will win prizes, including copies of Kimm Walton’s Guerilla Tactics to Getting the Legal Job of Your Dreams. Hope to see you there – bring your career-related questions!
CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!
The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. Please call our office at 312-906-5200 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for the username and password. To watch videos of our programming, go to the CSO's web page, click on the right hand navigation bar "For Students" and select "Watch Program Videos." Or, click here to be taken directly to the page.
August 13: OCI Interview Schedules Go Live
Student interview schedules for OCI will be available on Symplicity on August 13, 2010 after 5 pm. Click on the “OCI” tab and then on “Scheduled Interviews.” Please remember to check back frequently as changes to room numbers, interviewers, and possibly even changes to your interview schedule itself may occur at any point in the process. We will not be sending out emails regarding such changes unless entire interview schedules are canceled. It is your responsibility to check on Symplicity.
Mock Interviews for Fall Recruiting
Our office will be conducting Mock Interviews August 10-13 from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Sign-ups for mock interviews will begin on July 26. If you are interested in scheduling a mock interview to prepare for the Fall Recruiting Program, please email email@example.com with your availability, stop by Suite 360 or call the office at (312) 906-5200 to schedule. Sign-up sheets will also be available at the Mandatory Fall Recruiting Programs at noon and 5:15 pm on July 28.

Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!
If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org every couple weeks or so. Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.). We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation. Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

The American Constitution Society Invites Law Students to Summer Events Around the Country
The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS) is one of the nation's leading progressive legal organizations with chapters at over 170 law schools and over 30 lawyer chapters. Founded in 2001, ACS is comprised of law students, lawyers, scholars, judges, policymakers and activists working to ensure that fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice enjoy their rightful, central place in American law.
As law students begin their summers, ACS invites students to participate in programs and activities held around the country by signing up for an ACS summer list. WealthCounsel Estate Planning Symposium

WealthCounsel, a national organization of over 2,000 estate planning attorneys will be conducting a live estate planning symposium in Chicago, August 10-13, 2010. The symposium offers three days of practical estate planning education, including many essential estate planning topics which would be of tremendous interest to law students. WealthCounsel would like to offer Chicago-Kent faculty and students who may be considering careers in estate planning a very special professional development opportunity. DOJ Attorney General's Application Opens July 26, 2010
The Honors Program is the way that the DOJ hires entry-level attorneys. This year’s application period for students in their final year of law school as well as for recent graduates begins on July 26, 2010 and ends on September 7, 2010. The Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP) is the Department's competitive recruitment program for compensated summer internships. The Department offers extensive legal internship programs to law students with challenging opportunities in Washington, D.C. and in cities across America for positions during the summer and throughout the academic year. Through Volunteer Legal Intern Recruitment, the Department selects approximately 1800 volunteer interns each year. Approximately 800 interns volunteer during the academic year and about 1000 volunteer internships are offered during the summer. These are highly sought after because of the responsibility and experience they offer. A significant number of volunteer internships are located in Washington D.C., but there are also opportunities with the 55 Immigration Courts, the 95 U.S. Trustees' Offices and other Department field offices nationwide. Some volunteer internships may qualify for course credit. Interested students can contact the externship office for specific requirements. There are a very limited number of paid part-time positions.
Fellowships & Scholarships
Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program
Latham & Watkins is once again pleased to announce the Latham Diversity Scholars Program which will award a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of four second-year law students for use during their third year of law school (2011-2012). Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate's:
- Ability and committment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms;
- Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession;
- Academic and/or leadership achievements; and
- Desire to practice in a global law firm environment
Students will be asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 30, 2010. This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham. Rather, it is open to all law students in the hope that greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms will benefit the entire profession. Recipients will be announced in the spring of 2011.

Sidley Austin Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship
Sidley Austin is launching a Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship Initiative for Second Year Law Students. Please note that candidates must both apply for the scholarship as well as apply for a summer associate position. Sidley will grant a $15,000 Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship to a limited number of deserving second year law students who also have an offer to join Sidley's 2011 summer program.
Preference will be given to students at schools where Sidley conducts on-campus interviews (OCI) or participates in a resume collection. Students should have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership qualities as well as a demonstrated ability to contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the law school and/or legal profession.
Scholarship recipients are expected to join Sidley's 2011 summer associate program following the second year of law school and use the scholarship to defray the costs of his/her legal education. Recipients are also expected to participate in Sidley's ongoing dialogue regarding ways to improve diversity and inclusion.
How to Apply:
The application process will open on June 14, 2010 and will remain open through the Fall 2010 recruiting season. Sidley encourages students at those schools where it conducts OCI to apply before interview season and to sign up for an on-campus interview. Students attending other law schools are also encouraged to apply early. Applicants must apply for the scholarship and separately apply for a summer associate position.

Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area: Opportunities for Volunteer Attorneys & Deferred Associates
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (LCCR), with the help of pro bono attorneys, provides free legal assistance to individuals in the areas of race, poverty, and immigration. In addition, the Lawyers' Committee handles impact cases that focus on important civil rights issues. Volunteer/deferred associates will work in one or more issue areas. Projects include:
- Educational Equity: Addresses differential access by students of color to resources in K-12 education by coordinating a program to ensure that schools, districts and superintendents comply with the Williams v. California settlement.
- African-American Agenda: Impact litigation and policy advocacy on significant issues facing the Bay Area's African-American community, including racial discrimination in housing & education, school desegregation & affirmative action.
- Voting Rights: Advocates for the rights of people of color under the California Voting Rights Act.
- Legal Services for Entrepreneurs: Provides business legal services to low-income entrepreneurs whose for-profit businesses will enhance the economic infrastructure of their neighborhoods. Free legal assistance is also provided to businesses which invest directly in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
- Legal Services Clinic: Enlists pro bono attorneys to serve low-income San Franciscans with a focus on six areas: eviction defense, public benefits issues, tort defense, debt collection, school expulsions/suspensions & non-profit counseling.
- Asylum Program: Recruits pro bono lawyers, interpreters, and mentor immigration attorneys to provide legal representation to indigent refugees fleeing persecution and torture around the globe.
- Immigrant Rights: Impact litigation and policy advocacy on behalf of immigrants and refugees, including legal challenges to unlawful arrest practices, detention conditions, and racial/ethnic profiling.
- Domestic Workers Project: Provides legal assistance, community education, and policy advocacy on behalf of domestic workers and other low wage immigrant workers experiencing exploitation.

Kent students and alumni now have an additional resource for their job searches. The BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank compiles entry level job postings from schools throughout the country. This resource will be especially useful for students and alumni conducting an out-of-town job search, but through this service you can also access the postings of other Illinois and Chicago area schools. To access this resource, log into Symplicity and select the “Documents” tab. Within Documents, select “Document Library.” The link for the Job Bank will be listed there. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with a username and password, which you should write down before clicking the link. The link takes you to the BYU Alumni page, and the Job Bank is about halfway down the page. After clicking that link you will be prompted to enter the user name and password. Then you will have access to a drop list of all 50 states. Picking a state will give you access to the job postings from the schools in that state. International Career Employment Weekly's goal is to make it easy for international professionals to keep abreast of all current job opportunities in their field.
