Listserv Registration and Testing

We recently tested the various Career Services listservs. If you have signed up for a listserv and did not receive a “test” email for that listserv, please contact Kentcso@kentlaw.edu to let us know that you were erroneously omitted from that listserv.

If you receive an email from a listserv that you no longer want to be included on, please also email Kentcso@kentlaw.edu noting which listserv(s) you wish to be removed from.

Finally, if you have not yet submitted a listserv registration form, you can complete this form and email it back to mschmitt@kentlaw.edu, fax it to 312-906-5171 or drop it off in the Career Services Office.

These listservs will be used to distribute career services information beginning next week, so quick registration will ensure that you do not miss any important  information.

Make-up Procedures for "What's Next for Fall?"

If you were unable to attend this year's Mandatory What’s Next for Fall Programs held in April, you must follow the steps outlined below:

1) Watch the video of the April 19 What’s Next for Fall Program Program. Click here to be taken to the Program & Videos page.

2) Complete, sign and submit the What’s Next for Fall Registration Sheet to the main Career Services Office in Suite 360 by 5 pm on Friday, May 20, 2011.

3) In addition, if after viewing the video you decide that you would like to participate in Fall Recruiting 2011, you must complete the Mandatory Fall Recruiting Program Make-up Questionnaire, and submit it to the main Career Services Office in Suite 360 also by 5 pm on Friday, May 20, 2011.

4) Review the Resource Sheets referenced in the program on-line (PDF links are listed on the Programs & Videos page or in the Fall Recruiting section of the kentlaw.edu website under “Make-up Procedures.”) Alternatively, you can pick up copies of the handouts in the main Career Services Office.

Summer Resume Books Now Live

Summer Resume Books are now available to employers, but students may still “opt-in” to books for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2010 and 2011 classes). As employers may request a resume book at any time, students are encouraged to opt-in to desired resume books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this summer, keep in mind that summer resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Fall 2011.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

For more information about Resume Books, click here.

CSO Open all Summer Long

The Career Services Office remains open with its regular hours throughout the summer time, and continues to provide students and graduates with the same counseling, resume review, and other services. Please don’t hesitate to come in, call or email!

CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!

The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. Please call our office at 312-906-5200 or email kentcso@kentlaw.edu for the username and password. To watch videos of our programming, go to the CSO's web page, click on the right hand navigation bar "For Students" and select "Watch Program Videos." Or, click here to be taken directly to the page.

On-Campus Interviews

Updates: Resume Review & Deadline Extension, Mandatory Fall Meetings for 2L and 3Ls

Resume Review and Deadline Extension

Any student planning to participate in the fall on-campus program for the first time must have his/her resume reviewed by a career services office advisor before August 5, 2011.  If you have previously had your resume reviewed for another purpose, you can submit your resume by email.

If your Career Adviser is Yadi Trujillo or Pascale Bishop and you are requesting an email review of your resume, please send your resume to Kentcso@kentlaw.edu and in the subject line write “Resume Review Request, [Class Year, Name of Counselor].” Your resume will be given to one of the other Career Advisers to review. If your assigned counselor is Jeanne Kraft, Michelle Vodenik or Meredith Schmitt, you can email your resume directly to your counselor for review.

If you have never had a CSO Career Adviser review your resume you must make an appointment.  Again, if your counselor is Yadi Trujillo or Pascale Bishop please call the main Career Services Office at 312-906-5200, email Kentcso@kentlaw.edu or stop by the Career Services Office to schedule an appointment. If your assigned counselor is Jeanne Kraft, Michelle Vodenik or Meredith Schmitt, you can schedule an appointment through Symplicity.

Students who participated in the program last year are not required to have a resume review, but are encouraged to do so. Please follow the directions above if you would like to make an appointment or email your resume for review.

OCI resume reviews end at noon, on August 5, 2011.  Please note that this is an extension of the originally stated deadline of July 29, 2011.

For assistance in preparing a resume view the CSO resume handout

Mandatory Meetings for Rising 2Ls and 3Ls

In addition, each rising 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career adviser by October 15, 2011 for a career strategy appointment. For those of you planning on participating in Fall Recruiting, interested in a federal court clerkship, applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting sooner rather than later. Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you work with your career adviser to formulate a comprehensive strategy to accomplish your career goals and if necessary to adjust them to accommodate a longer-term plan for your success. Before attending your career strategy session with your counselor, we recommend conducting some self-analysis regarding the types of law that interest you, the types of settings in which you would like to practice, etc. In addition please plan on bringing your most recent resume with you.

Important Upcoming Fall Recruiting Dates

  • August 1, 2011: The Symplicity bidding system will be open for student bid entry.

  • August 29, 2011: On-Campus Interviews begin.

Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.
