Makeup Procedures for Mandatory 1L Orientation

The make-up procedures for the Mandatory 1L Career Services Orientation program are now available. A video of this week’s program, along with all accompanying handouts, is posted on-line here: http://www.kentlaw.edu/depts/cso/videos/videos.html. To watch the video, the user name is “videos” and the password is “kentlaw.”  One of the handouts is a survey form – please make sure that you fill out the correct form (for 2014 or 2015 graduates) and fill it out as completely as possible. We use this forms to assign your career counselor.  If at all possible we ask that you return a completed form to the Career Services Office (Suite 360) by Friday, November 4. Survey forms are also available in the Career Services Office.

 

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Mandatory Meetings for Rising 2Ls and 3Ls

Each rising 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career adviser for a career strategy appointment. The deadline for this meeting has been extended to January 13, 2012. Appointments may be made via Symplicity, and the CSO will be open over Winter Break. Your career adviser has great career planning information, practitioner contacts, and job search strategies, but can only help if you make an appointment!

Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you work with your career adviser to formulate a comprehensive strategy to accomplish your career goals and if necessary to adjust them to accommodate a longer-term plan for your success. Before attending your career strategy session with your counselor, we recommend conducting some self-analysis regarding the types of law that interest you, the types of settings in which you would like to practice, etc. In addition please plan on bringing your most recent resume with you.

 

Fall Resume Book Sign Ups Continue

Fall Resume Books became available on Monday, August 22nd for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates. Employers were notified that resume books are available on September 2nd, but as employers may request a resume book at any time, students are encouraged to continute to opt-in to desired resume books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this fall, keep in mind that fall resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Spring or Summer 2012.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

Listserv Registration and Testing

We recently tested the various Career Services listservs. If you have signed up for a listserv and did not receive a “test” email for that listserv, please contact Kentcso@kentlaw.edu to let us know that you were erroneously omitted from that listserv. 

If you receive an email from a listserv that you no longer want to be included on, please also email Kentcso@kentlaw.edu noting which listserv(s) you wish to be removed from.

Finally, if you have not yet submitted a listserv registration form, you can complete this form and email it back to mschmitt@kentlaw.edu, fax it to 312-906-5171 or drop it off in the Career Services Office.

These listservs will be used to distribute career services information, so quick registration will ensure that you do not miss any important  information.

 

CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!

The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. On-Campus Interviews

Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Association of Corporate Counsel Diversity Summer Internship Program

The Association of Corporate Counsel internship program places top minority law students in internships in corporate legal departments in the Chicagoland area. Examples of corporations that have participated in this program in the past are: Accenture, Alliant Credit Union, Career Education, Empire, Illinois Tool Works, McDonald's Corporation, Navistar, Square D, Kraft, Verizon Wireless and Walgreens. Students in the program received a stipend in the summer of 2011 of $6000. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2012. Twin Cities Diversity in Practice Annual 1L Summer Rotation Clerkship Program

Twin Cities Diversity in Practice is a collaboration of law firms and corporate law departments seeking to enhance the diversity of the legal profession and the Twin Cities legal community.  Through its 1L Summer Rotation Clerkship Program, it is offering first-year law students a unique summer clerkship opportunity that combines a traditional law firm clerkship with experience working in an in-house corporate law department.

Students will have the opportunity to work at one of the nation's best law firms. As part of the law firm clerkship, students will spend one “rotation” (typically 3 to 4 weeks) working in the law department of a major corporation.  The corporate participants in this program are Fortune 500 global companies headquartered in the Twin Cities. A complete application will include a resume, transcript, and cover letter.

Just the Beginning Foundation Diversity Judicial Externships

For law students in the pipeline towards a legal profession, Just The Beginning Foundation (JTBF) offers resources and opportunities to assist students by exposing them to various legal opportunities (externships), helping to build resumes and assisting them in making the way through the job market and to the job that best suits them.

JTBF matches law students with federal and state judges across the country for externships for their 1L summer or 2L or 3L school years. JTBF also runs the Share the Wealth Clerkship program, through which 3L students and law school graduates participate in a special round of interviewing for full-time clerkship positions.

1L Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program: Deadline to Apply January 20th

The Minnesota State Bar Association’s Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program, now in its seventh year, provides first-year law students with a paid legal job during the summer following their first-year of law school.  The Clerkship Program provides first-year minority law students with the unique opportunity to obtain “real world” legal experience from some of Minnesota’s large and medium-sized law firms and corporate legal departments. While the program is tailored towards students at law schools in the Twin Cities area, the committee recognizes that many first-year law students at Midwest law schools are interested in practicing law in Minnesota.  With this in mind, the committee has set aside up to three spots in the Summer 2012 Program for first-year law students not attending a Minnesota law school. Summer Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a summer internship program open to all first or second year minority or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in Illinois, Texas, Washington DC, Miami, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Seattle, and California. Interns will receive an award of $1,500. The time commitment can vary by student, subject to a six-week minimum. Students will be expected to coordinate their schedule with their individual judges and to work the hours required by each judge. Students are asked to submit a completed application, resume, transcript (second-year students), legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Detailed program information and applications are available at the program website. Applications will be accepted beginning October 4th for second year students and December 1st for first year students. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2011. Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI): Applications Opened For 2Ls on October 15th

Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI): Applications for 2Ls for Summer 2012 opened on October 15th; Applications for 2Ls/3Ls for Spring 2012 open on November 1st

The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) offers $5,000 internships for students who spend their summer at one of their designated Chicago-area legal aid organizations. PILI also offers a limited number of 200-hour school year internships for Chicago area law students during the Spring Semester. Many PILI Interns provide low-income and disenfranchised clients with critically needed direct legal assistance. Other PILI Interns conduct advocacy, policy-based work or impact litigation that enhances the health, safety and welfare of the disenfranchised. All PILI Interns gain valuable work experience that distinguishes their education and ultimately their careers. As many as 12 Chicago-Kent students in one summer have received PILI internships! Applications for 2L students to apply for summer internships opened on October 15th. Applications for 2L/3L students for Spring Semester 2012 internships will open on November 1st. Applications for 1L students for summer internships, will open on  December 1st.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to apply for a PILI Internship, you will need to register on www.IllinoisProBono.org before you can submit your application. There is an approval process that can take up to 24 hours (longer on weekends and holidays). After registering and receiving approval, you may apply online for PILI Internships.

 

Access to Practice Externship and Federal Work Study:  Application Deadline December 15th

Access to Practice Externship and Community Federal Work Study positions are now being posted in Symplicty. Check frequently for additional opportunities! PLEASE NOTE: Students cannot receive both externship credit and federal work study for the same position. When applying for federal work study, there is no guarantee that a request will be approved, due to limited funds. When applying for externship credit, the student must first apply and receive formal approval. Students may apply for both federal work study and externship credit, in which case the federal work study request will be considered first, and in the event that insufficient funds are available, externship credit may be an option.

AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee - Minority Outreach Program

The AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee created the LCC Minority Outreach Program to encourage diverse law students to apply for summer clerkship opportunities at LCC law firms and legal departments. The outreach program seeks to introduce diverse law students to the practice of law in the labor movement and to encourage them to join the ranks of union-side attorneys in the ongoing battle for social and economic justice.

The program includes a networking conference, at the conclusion of which, students are placed in the LCC Mentor Program. Through this program LCC attorneys provide guidance and support during and after the students' clerkships. Harter Secrest & Emery 2012 Diversity Scholarship

The Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005. The firm awards one 1L law student with (1) a $7500 scholarship to be applied to the student’s second year tuition and (2) a paid 10-week summer associate position between the student’s first and second year of law school.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP?
To be eligible for the Diversity Scholarship, the applicant must be a full-time currently enrolled 1L law student who is in good standing at an accredited law school. First year students who are members of populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession are encouraged to apply.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA?
In addition to the eligibility requirements set forth above, each recipient will be selected on the basis of the following criteria: (1) the individual must possess an academic record, interest and capacity that evidence great promise for a successful career during the remainder of law school and in the legal profession; and (2) the individual must contribute to the diversity of the student body at his or her law school. Although a disclosure of financial circumstances is not required, a demonstrated need for financial assistance may be taken into consideration. The Diversity Scholarship recipient will be chosen based upon the Firm’s review of all scholarship applications and interviews conducted with scholarship finalists.

Kegler, Brown 2011 Minority Merit Scholarship for 1Ls

The law firm of Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter, located in Columbus, OH, is currently seeking applicants for its minority student merit scholarship. The $5,000 Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter Merit Scholarship includes a paid summer clerkship position with the firm's first-year associate class.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project Summer 2012

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the consumer protection departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States. The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General, as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service. The first and second year law students who have served as Steiger Fellows have characterized their experiences as truly rewarding, often well beyond their expectations. A number of students have said that for the first time they are considering law careers in public service, and several have already entered public service upon graduation.

The Council of the Section approved funding for states to participate in the 2012 Steiger Fellowship Project.  Each selected student will receive a $5,000 stipend (subject to certain federal taxes and administered through the offices of the state attorneys general). This Project continues to be a tribute to the memory of the late Janet D. Steiger, one of America’s great public servants who, during her remarkable tenure as FTC Chairman, dramatically improved cooperation, communication and coordination between state and federal consumer protection and antitrust enforcement agencies. Perkins Coie Diversity Fellowship for 1Ls

Perkins Coie is now accepting applications for its 1L Diversity Fellowship Scholarships. The fellowships provide students a $7,500 academic scholarship and a paid position as a 2012 summer associate with one of its following offices: Bellevue, Chicago, Los Angeles, Madison, Palo Alto, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Phoenix.  Students are limited to applying to one office.

The student fellows will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • The individual must be a first-year law student in good standing pursuing the degree of Juris Doctor at an ABA accredited law school,
  • The individual must possess an academic record, interest and capacity that demonstrate great promise for a successful career during the remainder of law school and in the legal profession, and
  • The individual must contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the law school student body and, upon entering the legal profession, the legal community.

Applications open December 1, 2011, and the deadline is January 17, 2012 (January 28 for the Pheonix location). Applicants must submit an application checklist, a current resume, three current references, undergraduate and, if available, law school transcripts (unofficial versions are acceptable), a legal writing sample (10-page maximum) and a one-page, single-spaced personal statement/essay. Vedder Price 1L Diversity Scholarship

Vedder Price is accepting applications for its 2011 Diversity Scholarship for 1L students. Eligible candidates are first-year law students enrolled at various Illinois law schools, including Chicago-Kent. The application form specifies additional eligibility requirements. In the past, the Vedder Price Diversity Scholarship has included a $5,000 monetary award for law school-related expenses for each year that the recipient remains in good standing at one of the qualified Illinois law schools, as well as a summer internship position after their first year of law school. Chicago Schweitzer Fellowship Program

The Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program® is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development. In addition to the four overall goals of the U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Program®, the Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program strengthens Fellows’ resolve to provide health and human services to underserved populations by facilitating opportunities for students to:

• Use their skills and knowledge in real-life situations
• Become culturally sensitive and compassionate caregivers
• Understand the impact of social and environmental determinants of health
• Build capacity for and commitment to improving the health status of individuals and communities as well as contributing to social change
• Work collaboratively and across disciplines in pursuit of a common goal
• Learn how to exercise leadership skills to work with and influence community based organizations, community leaders, and academic institutions to embrace holistic, service-oriented approaches to health

Upon successful completion of the initial Fellowship year, Fellows have the opportunity to participate in an alumni network of Fellows for Life – an interdisciplinary pipeline of emerging professionals who are dedicated and skilled in meeting the health needs of underserved communities. McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. 2012 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program

In furtherance of the goal of promoting diversity in intellectual property law, McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. is proud to announce its 2012 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program. This prestigious fellowship is a key component of McAndrews’ recruiting program. The firm intends to award a paid summer associate (clerkship) position for a period of 10 to 12 weeks following the recipient’s completion of his/her first year of law school. The position is part of McAndrews’ Summer Clerkship program, which annually attracts some of the most promising IP-focused law students in the nation. The firm intends to award a $5,000 fellowship on or about September 1, 2012, at the completion of the clerkship. As a summer associate at the McAndrews office in Chicago, the Diversity Fellow will gain experience in a wide range of intellectual property law and will be eligible to receive an offer to return for a second summer. To facilitate the Diversity Fellow’s professional growth and learning, a member of the McAndrews Diversity Committee will serve as a mentor and resource. Given the collegial culture at McAndrews, the Diversity Fellow will also establish rewarding relationships with other attorneys.

Candidate must (a) be a first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school with a diverse background that, in the firm’s view, would help to improve diversity in the field of intellectual property law; (b) have a degree in science or engineering; and (c) intend to practice patent law in Chicago, Illinois. Applications will be accepted December 1, 2011, through January 15, 2012. In-person interviews with
finalists will be conducted on a rolling basis. Applications can be found at the firm website. Applications must include:

• Undergraduate transcript (with GPA); and
• 500-word personal statement explaining why you wish to pursue a career in patent law, why you are interested in the McAndrews firm as a place to work, and how your background and/or life experiences would improve diversity in the field of intellectual property law.

 

Georgetown Law Clinical Teaching Fellowship

Georgetown Law is offering 14 Clinical Graduate Teaching Fellowships to new and experienced attorneys for the 2012-2014 academic years.  Each two-year fellowship is associated with one of the Law Center's clinical programs, and each program varies in purpose, requirements, and duties.  All of the clinical fellowships, however, share a common goal: to provide highly motivated lawyers the chance to develop skills as teachers and legal advocates within an exciting and supportive educational environment.   Fellows directly supervise J.D. students enrolled in the clinics, assist in teaching clinic seminars, and perform work on their own cases or other legal matters.

Fellowships will begin in the summer of 2012, with an intensive orientation designed to introduce fellows to clinical teaching methods. Upon completing the requirements for graduation, fellows are awarded the degree of Master of Laws (Advocacy).  Graduates of Georgetown's clinical fellowship program have gone on to prestigious positions in law teaching and public interest law settings. Teaching fellows receive an annual stipend of approximately $53,000 (taxable), health and dental benefits, and all tuition and fees in the LL.M. program. As full-time students, teaching fellows usually qualify for deferment of their student loans. In addition, teaching fellows may be eligible for loan repayment assistance from their law schools. With the exception of fellows in the Center for Applied Legal Studies and the Street Law Clinic, all fellows must be members of the D.C. bar. Fellowship applicants who are admitted to a bar elsewhere must apply to waive into the D.C. bar upon accepting their fellowship offer. The Law Center will reimburse the expense of waiving into the D.C. bar incurred by those fellows who have already taken the bar exam elsewhere prior to accepting their fellowship offer.

Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC) Student Registration: December 8th Deadline

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference is an opportunity for students to interview and meet with government agencies and public interest employers for paid and unpaid legal positions next summer or for after graduation. Last year 100 Chicago-Kent students and 40 employers participated. 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls can all participate. The job fair will take place at Northwestern University School of Law on Saturday, February 4, 2012. To register, contact Michelle Vodenik at mvodenik@kentlaw.edu in the Career Services Office with your first name, last name, middle initial, year of graduation and an email address that you regularly check by Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 12 noon. Registered students will receive a login and password and will be able to upload their resume and bid on employers beginning on December 12. Students will have until January 6, 2012 to upload their resume online and select employers they would like to interview with. In addition, table talk is available at the job fair where you can meet with many of the employers, even if you do not receive an interview in advance. More information is at www.mpilcc.org.

 

Job Fairs: Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive after attending a job fair, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Please see the instructions in the entry directly below for details on how to acess password information via Symplicity. Please note that the passwords for these sites are case sensitive.

Access the BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank

Kent students and alumni now have an additional resource for their job searches. The BYU Intercollegiate Job Bank compiles entry level job postings from schools throughout the country. This resource will be especially useful for students and alumni conducting an out-of-town job search, but through this service you can also access the postings of other Illinois and Chicago area schools. To access this resource, log into Symplicity and select the “Documents” tab. Within Documents, select “Document Library.” The link for the Job Bank will be listed there. Clicking on the link will take you to a page with a username and password, which you should write down before clicking the link. The link takes you to the BYU Alumni page, and the Job Bank is about halfway down the page. After clicking that link you will be prompted to enter the user name and password. Then you will have access to a drop list of all 50 states. Picking a state will give you access to the job postings from the schools in that state. If you have any difficulties accessing the Job Bank, please contact the Career Services Office by emailing kentcso@kentlaw.edu.

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin is now offering a free on-line Legal Employment Weekly e-blast of open jobs in the Chicago area. Every issue contains up-to-date job postings, an article and sign-up sheet from the Illinois Paralegal Association, and an Ask an Expert column. To receive the weekly email, go to http://jobs.lawbulletin.com and select the "E-LEW" tab at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, click on the link and complete the resulting form.

    To find your Banner CWID login to http://my.iit.edu. Once you are logged, on the right side of your screen you should see a box called IIT Personal ID numbers. The Banner CWID is the number beginning with “A.”
  2. In the Class Year Field:
    1. If you are an LLM student, enter LLM If you are a Visiting student, enter LV
    2. If you are a JD student your Class Year will be three characters. The first letter for all class years will be L. The second letter is your division. The third is your year number.
      Examples: A 2nd year night student’s class year is LN2. A 1st  year day student’s class year is LD1.

During your first time login you will create a username and password. Afterwards, you may log in directly at www.alumni.kentlaw.edu/advisorsearch using the username and password you created. International Career Employment Weekly's goal is to make it easy for international professionals to keep abreast of all current job opportunities in their field. They collect information on current international job openings with governments, government contractors, United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental organizations, private voluntary organizations working overseas, corporations involved in international trade and finance, engineering firms, associations, foundations, student exchange organizations, universities, and state governments and present that information to job seekers in a clear and concise format.
