CSO Information & Announcements

Make-up Procedures for Mandatory 1L Orientations

The makeup procedures for both the Mandatory 1L Career Services Orientation program and the Resume and Cover Letter Session are now available.  Videos from both these programs, along with all accompanying handouts, are posted online here:  http://www.kentlaw.iit.edu/career-preparation/programs-and-videos.  To watch the video, the user name is "videos" and the password is "kentlaw."

One of the handouts is a SURVEY FORM – please make sure that you fill out the correct form (for 2015 or 2016 graduates) and fill it out as completely as possible.  We use these forms to assign your career counselor.   You MUST return a completed form to the Career Services Office (Suite 360) ASAP.  Survey forms are also available in the Career Services Office.

Mandatory Meetings for Rising 2Ls and 3Ls

Each rising 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor by the end of this fall semester.  For those of you interested in a federal court clerkship, applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting as soon as possible. Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you work with your career advisor to formulate a comprehensive strategy to accomplish your career goals and if necessary to adjust them to accommodate a longer-term plan for your success. Before attending your career strategy session with your advisor, we recommend conducting some self-analysis regarding the types of law that interest you, the types of settings in which you would like to practice, etc. In addition please plan on bringing your most recent resume with you.

New CSO Resource: Videoconferencing for Video Interviews

The Chicago-Kent Career Services Office now offers videoconferencing (ISDN and IP options, as well as Skype) to allow employers to interview students remotely. Videoconferencing is a great option for employers and students who cannot travel to conduct interviews.  This videoconferencing equipment is located in Suite 360A, and it is available for students to use in interviewing or other programs upon request.  Please contact the Career Services Office at kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu in advance to reserve use of the video equipment.

The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. On-Campus Interviews

OCI and Job Fairs: Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

Be sure to check OCI interview schedules for changes in rooms, times, interviewers, etc.

Please remember to check Symplicity frequently during the 2012 Fall Recruiting process.  Changes to room numbers, interviewers, and possibly even changes to your interview schedule itself may occur at any point in the recruiting process. The CSO will not send out emails regarding such changes unless entire interview schedules are canceled. It is your responsibility to continually check Symplicity.

MSBA 1L Minority Clerkship Program

Applications for the MSBA 1L Minority Clerkship Program are due January 25, 2013.
The Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program (MMCP) is in its eighth year since implementation. The program was conceived and is administered by the Diversity Committee with the purpose of fostering diversity within the Minnesota legal community.

The program is designed to match selected 1L students-of-color with participating Minnesota legal employers for a summer clerkship opportunity. The clerkship program gives employers and students a unique opportunity to establish contacts, obtain "real world" experience and promote diversity in the legal profession.  To learn more about who qualifies, click here.

Here is how it works:
Each 1L law student who provides a complete application and who self-identifies as a minority under the EEOC definition of minority will be interviewed by members of the Diversity Committee and other volunteer attorneys. A limited number of students (based on the number of participating employers) will be chosen for a second round of interviews. Those students chosen for the second round of interviews are guaranteed summer employment. However, they will still need to interview with all the participating employers during a day-long interview process. The employers and students will then rank their choices from first to last. The MMCP chair will then generate a blind match of employer and students, which will determine the employment matches for the clerkship program.

To apply for the clerkship program you will need to submit:

  • Contact information;
  • Law school transcript with GPA;
  • Undergraduate university transcript with GPA;
  • An essay explaining what makes you a unique candidate for this program and how you think your uniqueness will affect your legal career in Minnesota;
  • A legal writing sample;
  • Your resume; and
  • The Minnesota Minority Clerkship Online Application

Each 1L law student who provides a complete application and who identifies as a minority will be interviewed by members of the Diversity Committee. A limited number of applicants will be selected for a second round of interviews.

To apply, go here:  http://www.mnlegaldiversity.org/clerkship-program/application-form.html

ASIL Arthur C. Helton Fellowship for Work Related International Law and Human Rights

The Arthur C. Helton Fellowship Program, established in 2004 on the recommendation of the ASIL Honors Committee, recognizes the legacy of Arthur Helton, a remarkable ASIL member who died in the August 19, 2003 bombing of the UN mission in Baghdad along with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Viera de Mello and 20 others.

Law students, practicing lawyers, human rights professionals, scholars and other individuals seeking assistance in conducting international fieldwork and law-related research are encouraged to apply.
Funded in part by contributions from ASIL members and private foundations, Helton Fellowships provide financial assistance in the form of "micro-grants" for law students and young professionals to pursue field work and research on significant issues involving international law, human rights, humanitarian affairs and related areas.

Helton Fellowship micro-grants are intended to ensure that these individuals have access to modest amounts of funding that can often stand between them and their first professional opportunities to become effective practitioners, experts and scholars of international law.
Helton Fellowship micro-grants are intended to contribute to paying for logistics, housing and living expenses, and other costs related to the Fellow's international law fieldwork and research in affiliation with the sponsoring organization.

Applicants must be sponsored or affiliated, for purposes of completing their project, in some way with an educational institution, international organization or non-governmental organization working in international law, human rights, humanitarian affairs or related areas.

The application form and guidelines for a qualifying proposal, as well as general information, may be found at the ASIL website. Due to administrative constraints,only the first 50 completed applications, submitted on-line, and received in full by the submission deadline will be reviewed. A notice that the application process has closed will be posted on the ASIL website once 50 completed applications have been received.
Applicants may submit application materials beginning Monday, October 15, 2012. All applications must be received no later than Monday, January 7, 2013 by 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.

Incomplete applications and those received after January 7, 2013 will not be reviewed under any circumstances. ASIL will acknowledge receipt of application materials, and the date they are received, in a timely fashion by email. Awards will be announced by mid-February 2013. The Fellowship Selection Committee is unable to respond to individual requests for information about the status of applications prior to this date.

Hogan/Smoger Access To Justice Essay Contest

For 40 years, this competition was known as the "Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest." It was established in 1970 by the late Roscoe B. Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama, a prominent environmental lawyer. The competition provided law students the opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to the many injustices inflicted on the environment.

With additional support from attorney Gerson Smoger — a past president of Public Justice and current board member — the contest was renamed, and, beginning with the 2011 competition, expanded to consider not only environmental but all forms of injustice.

For the 2013 contest, writers should address the question, "Is Democracy for Sale?"

  • Have Citizens United's holdings run amok?
  • Legal challenges left to Super Pacs?
  • Can funding disclosure be required?

Prize: $5000 and free 2013 Public Justice membership.

Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may enroll in the contest. Each entry must be submitted through a faculty advisor. All entrants must fill out and submit an intent-to-enter form by January 31, 2013 e-mail it to Cassandra Goings
Essays must be received by March 31, 2013.

Founded in 1972 by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Women's Rights Project has been a leader in the legal battles to ensure women's full equality in American society. The project will combine litigation and advocacy with community outreach and public education. WRP staff will work with the chosen candidate to develop the fellowship proposal.
