CSO Information & Announcements

CSO Seeks Student Worker

The Career Services Office seeks a student worker for Spring 2012 for a paid, federal work study position.  Flexible hours, though preference is for 10-15 hours per week.  Duties will include data entry; maintenance of active job postings; organization of resources; scheduling appointments; calls to employers and potential speakers; answering phones; and front desk reception work.

Interested students should submit resumes to kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu by February 4, 2013 with "CSO Position" in the email subject line. Please also indicate approximate days and hours of availability. Please note that federal work study eligibility is required for work during the spring semester.

Resume Books for Spring Semester

Resume Books are back for spring! Spring Semester Resume Books are now available for “opt-in” for all 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2012 class).  Remember, even if you opted in last semester, you must resubmit your resume to the books of your choices for the Spring Semester.  We will notify employers that resume books are available on February 4, 2013. You may opt-in to a resume book at any time; however, as we receive most the most requests for resume books immediately after notifying employers, we encourage you to submit your resume before this date.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks). Read more about Resume Books here.

If you have additional questions about Resume Books, or would like your resume reviewed prior to opting in to a Resume Book, please contact your career counselor.

Make-up Procedures for Mandatory 1L Orientations

The makeup procedures for both the Mandatory 1L Career Services Orientation program and the Resume and Cover Letter Session are now available.  Videos from both these programs, along with all accompanying handouts, are posted online here:  http://www.kentlaw.iit.edu/career-preparation/programs-and-videos.  To watch the video, the user name is "videos" and the password is "kentlaw."

One of the handouts is a SURVEY FORM – please make sure that you fill out the correct form (for 2015 or 2016 graduates) and fill it out as completely as possible.  We use these forms to assign your career counselor.   You MUST return a completed form to the Career Services Office (Suite 360) ASAP.  Survey forms are also available in the Career Services Office.

Mandatory Meetings for Rising 2Ls and 3Ls

Each rising 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor by the end of this fall semester.  For those of you interested in a federal court clerkship, applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting as soon as possible. Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you work with your career advisor to formulate a comprehensive strategy to accomplish your career goals and if necessary to adjust them to accommodate a longer-term plan for your success. Before attending your career strategy session with your advisor, we recommend conducting some self-analysis regarding the types of law that interest you, the types of settings in which you would like to practice, etc. In addition please plan on bringing your most recent resume with you.

New CSO Resource: Videoconferencing for Video Interviews

The Chicago-Kent Career Services Office now offers videoconferencing (ISDN and IP options) to allow employers to interview students remotely. Videoconferencing is a great option for employers and students who cannot travel to conduct interviews.  This videoconferencing equipment is located in Suite 360A, and it is available for students to use in interviewing or other programs upon request.  Please contact the Career Services Office at kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu in advance to reserve use of the video equipment.

CSO Program Videos Now Available Online!

The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that videos of our programming are now available to be viewed online. Most of our programming will be available on our website within 1-2 days of the original program date and will remain available for viewing for 2-3 weeks, due to limited server space. Program videotapes will still be available in our office. A password is required to view these programs. Please call our office at 312-906-5200 or email kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu for the username and password. To watch videos of our programming, go to the CSO's web page, click on the right hand navigation bar "Student Information" and select "Programs and Videos." Or, click here to be taken directly to the page.

OCI and Job Fairs: Don't Forget to Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks/offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu every couple weeks or so.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career counselor.

January 29:  Preparing for the Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC)

Date: Tuesday, January 29, 2013
Time: noon - 1:00pm
Location: Room 590

This program will help students strategize for interviewing and networking at MPILCC.  Come hear from students and staff who have prior MPILCC experience to learn how to best make connections and build professional relationships. Visit the MPILCC website at www.mpilcc.org  for conference details and be sure to attend this program. This program is co-sponsored by the Career Services Office and Kent Justice Foundation.

MPILCC, the Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference, is an opportunity to meet and interview with Chicago and Midwest-area public interest and government organizations.  This year, MPILCC will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Northwestern University School of Law (located in downtown Chicago).  The conference offers students the opportunity to interview for summer law clerk positions and entry-level attorney positions.  In addition, students can meet with representatives from public interest and government organizations during the time allotted for Table Talk from 9:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m.; this is one of the most important points at which students can make valuable connections. Plymouth Court (next to the John Marshall Law School) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.  Practice Tracks provides students with the opportunity to talk informally with attorneys about careers in a variety of practice areas.  Practice Tracks is your chance to determine how job seekers are faring in a particular segment of the market, what it is like to practice in a specific practice area, which credentials are helpful in finding employment in that area, what skills you should emphasize when applying, and more!

Even though the participating attorneys volunteer their time and participation for Practice Tracks, that does not indicate job openings at represented organizations.  However, this program has proven to be an extremely effective means of networking and obtaining helpful information about prospective employers in a variety of different settings and practice areas.  To benefit from and make the most of this program, you may obtain business cards from practitioners in your areas of interest, and later reach out to those attorneys for an informational interview.

BP 2013 Summer Legal Intern Program

BP is the largest producer of oil and gas in the US, and the second largest in the world.  BP’s global legal department consists of more than 440 lawyers - 170 working in the United States at offices in Alaska, California, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, and Texas. BP lawyers are diverse and practice law in many areas - antitrust and competition, commercial, corporate, environmental, labor and employment, intellectual property, litigation, trademarks and trade regulation - just to name a few.

BP recognizes the inherent benefits of having a diverse and inclusive work environment.  BP’s Diversity and Inclusion (“D&I”) vision is to be known internally and externally as an employer and partner of choice with an inclusive culture in which a diverse workforce contributes and realizes its individual and collective potential.  One step towards realizing BP’s Diversity and Inclusion vision is through the US Legal Group Summer Internship Program (“SIP”).  The SIP was originally created to expose first-year minority law students to a corporate legal environment; the SIP has evolved to provide comprehensive legal practice exposure to first-year law students who have shown a strong commitment to Diversity and Inclusion.
In 2013, BP Legal will offer summer intern positions at each of its legal offices in:

  • Houston, Texas [10 weeks]
  • Naperville, Illinois (western suburb of Chicago) [8 weeks]
  • Anchorage, Alaska [8 weeks]

Houston and Naperville offices will have two interns each and the Anchorage office will have one intern.   All five interns are expected to work full time for the 8 to 10 week program.  Exact start and end dates are flexible but generally run from early June through the middle of August.  Interns are paid competitively.  In addition to the paid internship, BP interns receive a one-time scholarship to assist with their legal education. These scholarships will be awarded no later than mid-August 2013.

To expose interns to several areas of law practice - and thereby help inform their curriculum and career choices - interns are rotated among our various practice groups, generally working one to two weeks in a group. A program coordinator acts as the intern's immediate supervisor and mentor.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Students in good standing who have completed only one year of law school at an ABA-accredited law school are invited to apply. Students participating in part time and evening programs are eligible provided that such students have not begun 2L course work.

Participants in the Summer Program are not compensated. Some schools may offer students grants or allow for academic credit.

During the Summer Program, the law clerks will be assigned to work in one of the practice divisions in the law department and participate in a wide variety of activities including:

They may also depose or examine witnesses in trials in state and federal court.

During the summer, the Law Department will host a lecture series that feature speakers addressing legal
issues that affect the City in areas such as environmental and First Amendment law and provides the law clerks with opportunities to meet with City department officials and members of state and federal judiciary.

The Law Department seeks talented, promising individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many of our attorneys are active in civic and professional activities and organizations. The Law Department is committed to increasing opportunities for minorities in the legal profession, and it is proud that its staff reflects the racial, cultural and ethnic diversity of Chicago. Hogan/Smoger Access To Justice Essay Contest

For 40 years, this competition was known as the "Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest." It was established in 1970 by the late Roscoe B. Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama, a prominent environmental lawyer. The competition provided law students the opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to the many injustices inflicted on the environment.

With additional support from attorney Gerson Smoger — a past president of Public Justice and current board member — the contest was renamed, and, beginning with the 2011 competition, expanded to consider not only environmental but all forms of injustice.

For the 2013 contest, writers should address the question, "Is Democracy for Sale?"

  • Have Citizens United's holdings run amok?
  • Legal challenges left to Super Pacs?
  • Can funding disclosure be required?

Prize: $5000 and free 2013 Public Justice membership.

Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may enroll in the contest. Each entry must be submitted through a faculty advisor. All entrants must fill out and submit an intent-to-enter form by January 31, 2013 e-mail it to Cassandra Goings
Essays must be received by March 31, 2013.

Job Fairs

February 2:  Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC)

MPILCC, the Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference, is an opportunity to meet and interview with Chicago and Midwest-area public interest and government organizations.  The annual conference is coordinated by a coalition of Chicago-area law school career services offices, of which Chicago-Kent is a member.  Last year, more than 100 students from Chicago-Kent participated in MPILCC, as well as representatives from more than 40 government and public interest agencies.

This year’s conference will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Northwestern University School of Law.  The conference offers students the opportunity to interview for summer law clerk positions and entry-level attorney positions.  Though most of the available summer opportunities are unpaid or invite outside funding, there are a few positions that offer a stipend.  Students may also meet with representatives from public interest and government organizations during “table talk.”  Table talk is an excellent way to become familiar with a wide variety of public interest and government employers.  You may distribute your resume, discuss internship opportunities (both during the summer and the school year) and find out about post-graduation opportunities.  Table Talk will take place from 9:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. and is one of the most important points during which students can make valuable connections.

If you do not receive any interviews, or you did not register in advance for the conference, you may still attend and meet many of the employers through Table Talk.  Not all Table Talk employers may be hiring for summer or permanent positions. You are encouraged to attend and drop off resumes (if an employer is soliciting them) in person.

Also, please note:  because scheduled interviewees may lose their interview slots if they do not check in at the conference on time (scheduled interviewees MUST check in between 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m., regardless of their interview time), you may also show up at the conference early and try to receive an interview on the day of the conference; open slots are filled by lottery system for those who arrive early.  If you did receive interviews ahead of time, be sure to arrive on time (between 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m.) or you will lose your interviews!

Visit the MPILCC website at www.mpilcc.org for all conference details and attend the special workshop session on Preparing for MPILCC which will be held Tuesday, January 29 from noon—1 p.m. in Room 345.  This program will help students strategize for interviewing and networking at MPILCC.  Come hear from students and staff who have prior MPILCC experience to learn how to best make connections and build professional relationships.
