CSO Information & Announcements

Summer Resume Books: Opt In Starting May 20th

Summer Resume Books will be available for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls (current 1Ls), rising 3Ls (current 2Ls) and Recent Grads on May 20th. Employers will be notified that resume books are available on June 3rd, and as we receive the most requests for resume books immediately thereafter, we encourage you to opt-in before this date.  Employer often use these books to find candidates instead of posting a position; not having your resume in these books means missing out on potential job opportunities!

Participation in these books must be renewed each semester, so even if your resume was in a book this spring, you must opt-in again for summer. Even if you have secured employment for this summer, keep in mind that summer resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Fall 2013.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. rising 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

For more information about Resume Books, click here.

Federal Work Study for Summer 2013: Apply Now!

Chicago-Kent will have Community-Based Federal Work Study funds available during Summer 2013. Chicago-Kent rising 2L & 3L students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school.  A limited amount of funds are available, and students who have a federal work study award must list their summer employers on the application form. Please visit the Community-Based Federal Work Study webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate.  Applications for Federal Work Study for Summer 2013 are accepted on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as possible!

Mandatory Meetings for Current 2Ls and 3Ls

Each rising 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor as soon as possible.  For those of you interested in a federal court clerkship, applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting as soon as possible. Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you work with your career advisor to formulate a comprehensive strategy to accomplish your career goals and if necessary to adjust them to accommodate a longer-term plan for your success. Before attending your career strategy session with your advisor, we recommend conducting some self-analysis regarding the types of law that interest you, the types of settings in which you would like to practice, etc. In addition please plan on bringing your most recent resume with you.

New CSO Resource: “JD Careers Out There”

JD Careers Out There (JDCOT) is a new web video service that helps you find - and succeed in - a fulfilling career path using your law degree. This new tool is full of real world advice that you won't get in class. Whether you want to land a gig at a law firm, start your own firm, work for the government, or use your legal skills to do something outside of law, you'll hear from accomplished JDs who have been in your shoes and found the right path for them. With each video, you’ll get an “insider’s” look as they describe their fields, how to break in and how to succeed. You'll also get video tips on all kinds of practical skills from interviewing and networking to how to handle a new assignment at work and how to make partner. New video content will be coming to JDCOT 6 times per week.  Watch the videos in the CSO for free! Or check them out on your computer or mobile device for a minimal fee.  www.JDCareersOutThere.com; www.JDCOT.com.

Fall Recruiting: Important Dates and Resources

Just a reminder: several important Fall Recruiting dates and deadlines come up fast during the summer!  Much of “Fall” Recruiting takes place in early August, and there are several important due dates in July, so be sure to watch your kentlaw.iit.edu email for updates and information about Fall Recruiting.  Also, regularly check the OCI tab of Symplicity and the CSO Fall Recruiting website for information as well as tips on how to prepare application documents and research employers.

IMPORTANT: We will not be sending emails to all students about the program after July 1, 2013. Instead, we will use the registration forms from the recent What’s Next for Fall Programs for rising 2Ls and 3Ls to create/update practice area specific listservs that will be used to send important email updates over the summer.  We will be testing these listservs the week of May 20th; watch your email and the Record for more information. Be sure that you’re on the listservs; if you did not attend these programs and have not completed the required makeup procedures, complete them right away!  See the Announcements section of this page for more details.
