Make-up Procedures for Mandatory 1L Orientations and/or Resume/Cover Letter Workshop

If you did not attend one of the three mandatory 1L Career Services Orientation programs, the makeup procedures are as follows:

  • Watch the video of the 1L Orientation program.  The videos of the orientation programs, along with all accompanying handouts, are posted online here:  http://www.kentlaw.iit.edu/career-preparation/programs-and-videos You must watch the video using RealPlayer.  If you prefer, you may also watch this video on a computer in the Career Services Office (suite 360).
  • Complete the 1L Registration Form or "Survey."  Please make sure that you complete the correct survey form based on your graduation year, and fill it out as completely as possible.  These survey forms are available online at the above link, or extra survey forms are available in the Career Services Office.
  • Return a completed survey form to the Career Services Office (Suite 360) ASAP! 

You must complete these makeup procedures in order to gain access to Symplicity, Chicago-Kent's online job posting system, and to be assigned a career advisor.  Please email kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu with any questions.

  1. You must complete these makeup procedures in order to gain access to the "Documents" tab in Symplicity, Chicago-Kent's online job posting system.

Fall Recruiting: Please Report Callbacks and Offers!

If you receive callbacks or job offers during the fall interview season, please report this to our office by sending an email to kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu.  Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career advisor.

November 12: Fashion, Esquire: How to Dress for the Job You Want

The Student Bar Association presents a fun fashion show designed to teach students and young alumni not only how to dress for an interview, but also how to transition that attire into a more casual, professional networking environment. The event will cover topics such as: "getting started" - clothing staples to help transition your attire into a wardrobe fit for the young, legal professional - and fashion resources (e.g., in-store stylists, retail outlets, etc.). Associates from Power Rogers & Smith and K&L Gates will be presenting, while Chicago-Kent students model professional attire provided by The Men's Warehouse and Ann Taylor. November 13: Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP) and Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Diversity Law Student Panel

JIOP: The application process for the Summer 2014 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program opened on November 1st for second-year law students (2L).  Applications for first-year law students (1L) will be accepted December 1st, in accordance with NALP Guidelines. ACC: The Chicago ACC Diversity Summer Internship Program places first-year law students with diverse backgrounds from select Illinois law schools in internships in Chicagoland corporate legal departments.  The internships expose the students to in-house practices and career possibilities in corporate legal departments.

November 14: "Practice Tracks" Networking and Informational Event

Attorneys representing approximately 50 practice areas will attend Practice Tracks, a program held at the Chicago Bar Association, 321 S. Plymouth Court (next to the John Marshall Law School) on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 5:00 to 6:30 pmPractice Tracks provides students with the opportunity to talk informally with attorneys about careers in a variety of practice areas.  Practice Tracks is your chance to determine how job seekers are faring in a particular segment of the market, what it is like to practice in a specific practice area, which credentials are helpful in finding employment in that area, what skills you should emphasize when applying, and more!

Even though the participating attorneys volunteer their time and participation for Practice Tracks, that does not indicate job openings at represented organizations.  However, this program has proven to be an extremely effective means of networking and obtaining helpful information about prospective employers in a variety of different settings and practice areas.  To benefit from and make the most of this program, you may obtain business cards from practitioners in your areas of interest, and later reach out to those attorneys for an informational interview.

Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI):  Summer 2014 Applications open for 2Ls on October 15 and Spring 2014 Applications open November 1

PILI's Law Student Internship Program connects law students from across the country with legal service agencies in Illinois. Interns work 400 hours full-time during the summer or 200 hours part-time during the school year, with PILI ensuring quality supervision by experienced agency attorneys, and providing extra educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

PILI administers its Internship Program application through IllinoisProBono.org. You must register on this site before you can submit any applications.  The summer 2014 Internship application period opens on October 15 for 2Ls and December 1 for 1Ls. Click here to learn more about how to apply.

JTBF Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project for Summer 2014

The Judicial Resources Committee of the United States Judicial Conference and Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization® are pleased to announce the fourth annual Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project for Summer 2014.  The Project’s goal is to provide summer judicial internships for highly-qualified minority, underrepresented, and economically disadvantaged law students.  The Project is national in scope and will place 75 students as judicial interns in federal appellate, district, bankruptcy, and magistrate judges’ chambers across the country.  Interns will have the opportunity to draft bench memoranda, judicial orders, and opinions on a variety of substantive matters, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, magistrate judge reports, and habeas corpus petitions.  Applicants should possess strong research and writing skills and be prepared to handle the rigors of working in a federal court.

There will be an initial screening, which will identify qualified candidates eligible for a first-round interview conducted in-person or by telephone.  Applicants who clear this round will be referred to one of the Project’s Participating Judges for a second-round interview, after which each Participating Judge will make a final hiring decision.  Applicants who are hired must commit to attending two mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of the internship, either in-person or via videoconference, and must be available to work full-time as an unpaid intern for a minimum of six weeks. 

Applications will be received online until 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday, January 6, 2014. Electronic applications are available here. Early applications are highly encouraged. Paper applications will not be accepted.

Judicial Internship Opportunity Program Applications Open NOW for 2Ls, Open December 1 for 1Ls

The ABA is now accepting applications from second-year law students for the Judicial Internship Opportunity Program. Applications from first-year students will be accepted starting December 1, 2013. The deadline for all applications is Friday, January 10, 2014. No applications will be accepted after the deadline, and students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Only the first 500 applicants are guaranteed a screening interview.

The ABA will be placing 150 students in summer internships. This year’s students will be granted awards in the amount of $2,000 to help offset some of the expenses associated with the placement. Please proceed to the program application to apply to the Summer 2014 program.

American Bar Association Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program

Apply to be one of nine students placed in the Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program for the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, work with accomplished business court judges, and earn a stipend.

The objectives of the Diversity Clerkship include:

  • To encourage more diverse law students to apply for clerkship positions
  • To foster relationships between business court judges and diverse law students
  • To provide students with a foundation in various aspects of business law

Students are placed in clerkships across the country including the Philadelphia Commerce Court or the Delaware Court of Chancery. Applicants must be diverse first or second year students currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school, demonstrate financial need, and be a member of the ABA Law Student Division and Business Law Section.

Vedder Price Diversity Scholarship for First Year Law Students

Vedder Price recognizes that the strength of its commitment to diversity and inclusion is a vital component to a better work environment and the strength of the firm. Diversity is one of Vedder Price’s core values and is integral to the way the firm is run.  In keeping with its commitment to diversity, the Vedder Price Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005.

This scholarship includes a $5,000 monetary award for law school-related expenses for each year in which the recipient remains in good academic standing and attends an Illinois law school, as well as a guaranteed summer associate position in our Summer Associate Program after the scholarship recipient's first year of law school.

To be eligible, you must be a first-year law student who is a student of color, LGBT, a person with a disability or a person whose background or experience would otherwise contribute to the diversity of Vedder Price and the legal profession. In accordance with the scholarship criteria, you must be enrolled in one of the following Illinois law schools: Chicago-Kent College of Law, DePaul University, The John Marshall Law School, Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, University of Illinois.

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for IP Law Students

Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law
students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff’s commitment to fostering the
development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.
 
Eligibility
Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an
ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the Donald W.
Banner Diversity Scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of
Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff.
 
Selection Criteria
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship
review board based on the following criteria:

  • Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school)
  • Commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law
  • Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)
  • Written communication skills
  • Oral communication skills determined through an interview of the law student
  • Leadership qualities and community involvement

Financial Award
Recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship will receive $5,000 payable
for the Fall semester of their second or third year of law school.

McAndrews Held & Malloy  2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program

In furtherance of the goal of promoting diversity in intellectual property law, McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. is proud to announce its 2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program. This prestigious fellowship is a key component of McAndrews’ recruiting program.

Eligibility
Candidate must (a) be a first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school with a diverse background that, in the firm’s view, would help to improve diversity in the field of intellectual property law; (b) have a degree in science or engineering; and (c) intend to practice patent law in Chicago, Illinois.

Program Components
The firm intends to award a paid summer associate (clerkship) position for a period of 10 to 12 weeks following the recipient’s completion of his/her first year of law school. The position is part of McAndrews’ Summer Clerkship program, which annually attracts some of the most promising IP-focused law students in the nation.

The firm intends to award a $5,000 fellowship on or about September 1, 2014, at the completion of the clerkship. As a summer associate at the McAndrews office in Chicago, the Diversity Fellow will gain experience in a wide range of intellectual property law and will be eligible to receive an offer to return for a second summer. To facilitate the Diversity Fellow’s professional growth and learning, a member of the McAndrews Diversity Committee will serve as a mentor and resource. given the collegial culture at McAndrews, the Diversity Fellow will also establish rewarding relationships with other attorneys.

Chicago Schweitzer Fellowship Program

The Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program® is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development.

DEFINING HEALTH
Schweitzer Fellows focus on health as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO): a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Rooted in this holistic understanding of health, Schweitzer projects address not only clinical health issues, but also the social determinants of health—defined by the WHO as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and which are mostly responsible for health inequities.

ELIGIBILITY
Students enrolled in graduate or professional degree-granting programs from any accredited academic institution in the geographic area may apply. While the applicant’s field of study does not have to be traditionally health-related, his/her proposed service project must focus on health and/or the social determinants of health. Past Fellows have addressed health from a wide variety of perspectives and disciplines including, but not limited to, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine, music, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and social work. Applicants must be enrolled throughout the Fellowship year (May 2013-May 2014).  Applicants scheduled for a December graduation should contact the Program Director to determine if they are eligible for a waiver to this requirement.

PRIOR TO APPLYING
Prospective Fellows should be prepared to partner with a local community agency and design a community service project that seeks to provide direct service to an underserved population. This project should focus on addressing health and/or the social determinants of health in the population served.

The project should:

  • Provide a direct service that meets a community-defined need and reflects national and local health priorities, such as Healthy People 2020. Prospective applicants should investigate and reflect on unmet local health-related needs, and think through the ways in which their own energies and talents might contribute, even in small ways, to ameliorating one or more of these problems.
  • Be of an enduring value to the community/agency served.  The project proposal should include a brief discussion about sustainability of the project at the end of the Fellowship year.

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference is job fair and an opportunity for students to interview and meet with government agencies and public interest employers for paid and unpaid legal positions next summer or for after graduation.  1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls can all participate.  The job fair will take place at Northwestern University School of Law on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

To register, contact Allison Smith at asmith16@kentlaw.iit.edu in the Career Services Office with your first name, last name, middle initial, year of graduation and an email address that you regularly check by Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 12 noon.  In addition, table talk is available at the job fair where you can meet with many of the employers, even if you do not receive an interview in advance.  More information is available online at www.mpilcc.org.
