LiveHelp is an innovative chat service that allows people looking for legal information and self-help resources on to ask a remotely located LiveHelp Operator for assistance in navigating the website.  LiveHelp volunteers provide direct person-to-person online help so that people in need of legal assistance can obtain the information they need to achieve more positive outcomes to their legal problems.

Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) is hosting an online training webinar for students interested in volunteering as LiveHelp Operators during winter break and spring semester. The training is a free online webinar scheduled for Tuesday, December 17 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

American Bar Association Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program

Apply to be one of nine students placed in the Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program for the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, work with accomplished business court judges, and earn a stipend.

The objectives of the Diversity Clerkship include:

  • To encourage more diverse law students to apply for clerkship positions
  • To foster relationships between business court judges and diverse law students
  • To provide students with a foundation in various aspects of business law

Students are placed in clerkships across the country including the Philadelphia Commerce Court or the Delaware Court of Chancery. Applicants must be diverse first or second year students currently enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school, demonstrate financial need, and be a member of the ABA Law Student Division and Business Law Section.

Community Based Federal Work Study - Available Spring Semester, Application Deadline January 3

Chicago-Kent will have Community-Based Federal Work Study available during the Spring 2014 semester.  Chicago-Kent 2L & 3L students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school.  A limited amount of funds are available, and students who have a federal work study award must secure their job placement by the deadline.  Please visit the Chicago-Kent Community-Based Federal Work Study webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate.  Forms are due in the Career Services Office by Friday January 3, 2014.  Please e-mail Michelle Vodenik ( with any questions.

JTBF Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project for Summer 2014

The Judicial Resources Committee of the United States Judicial Conference and Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization® are pleased to announce the fourth annual Summer Judicial Internship Diversity Project for Summer 2014.  The Project’s goal is to provide summer judicial internships for highly-qualified minority, underrepresented, and economically disadvantaged law students.  The Project is national in scope and will place 75 students as judicial interns in federal appellate, district, bankruptcy, and magistrate judges’ chambers across the country.  Interns will have the opportunity to draft bench memoranda, judicial orders, and opinions on a variety of substantive matters, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, magistrate judge reports, and habeas corpus petitions.  Applicants should possess strong research and writing skills and be prepared to handle the rigors of working in a federal court.

There will be an initial screening, which will identify qualified candidates eligible for a first-round interview conducted in-person or by telephone.  Applicants who clear this round will be referred to one of the Project’s Participating Judges for a second-round interview, after which each Participating Judge will make a final hiring decision.  Applicants who are hired must commit to attending two mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of the internship, either in-person or via videoconference, and must be available to work full-time as an unpaid intern for a minimum of six weeks.

The ABA is now accepting applications from second-year and first-year law students for the Judicial Internship Opportunity Program. The deadline for all applications is Friday, January 10, 2014. No applications will be accepted after the deadline, and students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Only the first 500 applicants are guaranteed a screening interview.

The ABA will be placing 150 students in summer internships. This year’s students will be granted awards in the amount of $2,000 to help offset some of the expenses associated with the placement. Please proceed to the program application to apply to the Summer 2014 program.

Twin Cities Diversity in Practice 1L Summer Rotation Clerkship

Gain Experience at Both a Law Firm and a Corporation!
First-year law students now have a unique summer clerkship opportunity that combines a traditional law firm clerkship with experience working in an in-house corporate law department. Twin Cities Diversity in Practice is a collaboration of law firms and corporate law departments seeking to enhance the diversity of the legal profession. TCDP’s mission is to attract, recruit, advance and retain attorneys of color in the Minneapolis and St. Paul community.

How Does the Program Work?
This program connects top legal employers with talented 1L students of color. Students will have the opportunity to work at one of the nation’s best law firms (Law firms include Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Faegre Baker Daniels LLP and Stoel Rives). As part of the law firm clerkship, the students will spend one “rotation” (typically 3 to 4 weeks) working in the law department of a major corporation. Not only will the clerk get valuable legal training essential for success at most law firms, the clerk will gain “real world” insights into the fast-paced environment of a corporate law department.

Apply Now!  ACC Chicago Diversity Summer Internship Program for 1Ls

The Association of Corporate Counsel (Chicago Chapter) Diversity Summer Internship Program places law students with diverse backgrounds from select Illinois law schools in internships in Chicagoland corporate legal departments.  Selected law students work in the legal department of a Chicagoland company for a minimum of ten (10) weeks during the 2014 summer. 

Selected students are assigned a mentor in the company who is responsible for directing their workload and ensuring that the students have a positive learning experience.  In addition to their day-to-day work, the interns are also assigned a mentor from the ACC Chicago Chapter and will attend seminars and networking events hosted by the Chicago Chapter and participating legal departments.  These seminars offer the students helpful tips on topics such as networking, interviewing and resume writing. 

The Chicago Chapter is looking for students from racial and ethnic backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.  Additionally, the Chapter seeks diverse students who are eager to learn and are capable of thriving in a corporate environment.

The SEC’s Summer Student Honors Program is a ten-week opportunity for first-year law students to become acquainted with the regulation of the securities market.
Participants work with SEC Staff members on projects covering a broad range of the Commission’s mission, such as conducting investigations of industry and issuer practices, assisting in the litigation of enforcement actions, and drafting proposed statutes and rules, to name a few responsibilities.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project for Summer 2014

Apply now for the Summer 2014 Janet D. Steiger Fellowship!  Selected students will serve for a minimum of eight weeks during the summer of 2014 in the consumer protection or consumer affairs offices of participating State and Territorial governments.  The thirty-seven participating government office locations and application for the summer of 2014 can be found at Each selected student will receive a $5,000 stipend for the summer (administered through the offices of the state attorneys general and subject to certain federal taxes). Vedder Price Diversity Scholarship for First Year Law Students

Vedder Price recognizes that the strength of its commitment to diversity and inclusion is a vital component to a better work environment and the strength of the firm. Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for IP Law Students

Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law
students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff’s commitment to fostering the
development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.
Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an
ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the Donald W.
Banner Diversity Scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of
Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff.
Selection Criteria
Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship
review board based on the following criteria:

  • Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school)

  • Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)

McAndrews Held & Malloy  2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program

In furtherance of the goal of promoting diversity in intellectual property law, McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. is proud to announce its 2014 Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship Program. This prestigious fellowship is a key component of McAndrews’ recruiting program.

Candidate must (a) be a first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school with a diverse background that, in the firm’s view, would help to improve diversity in the field of intellectual property law; (b) have a degree in science or engineering; and (c) intend to practice patent law in Chicago, Illinois.

Program Components
The firm intends to award a paid summer associate (clerkship) position for a period of 10 to 12 weeks following the recipient’s completion of his/her first year of law school. The position is part of McAndrews’ Summer Clerkship program, which annually attracts some of the most promising IP-focused law students in the nation.

The firm intends to award a $5,000 fellowship on or about September 1, 2014, at the completion of the clerkship. As a summer associate at the McAndrews office in Chicago, the Diversity Fellow will gain experience in a wide range of intellectual property law and will be eligible to receive an offer to return for a second summer. To facilitate the Diversity Fellow’s professional growth and learning, a member of the McAndrews Diversity Committee will serve as a mentor and resource. given the collegial culture at McAndrews, the Diversity Fellow will also establish rewarding relationships with other attorneys.

Harter Secrest & Emery 1L Diversity Scholarship

The Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005. The firm awards one 1L law student with (1) a $7500 scholarship to be applied to the student’s second year tuition and (2) a paid 10-week summer associate position between the student’s first and second year of law school.

To be eligible for the Diversity Scholarship, the applicant must be a full-time currently enrolled 1L law student who is in good standing at an accredited law school. First year students who are members of populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession are encouraged to apply.

Peggy Browning Labor Law Summer Fellowship Program

The Peggy Browning Summer Fellowship Program is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at labor-related organizations around the country.  The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers' rights.  Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend.  Peggy Browning Fellows gain the practical skills required to represent workers.  They enjoy opportunities to network with their peers and leaders in the field of public interest labor law.  The mentor organizations and their clients benefit from the services provided by this talented and committed group.

Franczek Radelet 2014 LEADS Fellowship Program, 1L Students

Fraczek Radelet invites 1L law students to apply for the 2014 Legal Education for the Advancement of Diversity and Scholarship (LEADS) program.  The LEADS program is an intensive eight-week program designed for diverse first and second year law students who have an interest in pursuing a legal career in private practice representing employers in labor and employment matters. The goal of the program is to provide concentrated  labor and employment legal experience while developing a pipeline of highly qualified, diverse candidates for potential future employment with the Firm or in the private practice of law generally. Chicago Schweitzer Fellowship Program

The Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program® is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development.

Schweitzer Fellows focus on health as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO): a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Rooted in this holistic understanding of health, Schweitzer projects address not only clinical health issues, but also the social determinants of health—defined by the WHO as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and which are mostly responsible for health inequities.

Students enrolled in graduate or professional degree-granting programs from any accredited academic institution in the geographic area may apply. While the applicant’s field of study does not have to be traditionally health-related, his/her proposed service project must focus on health and/or the social determinants of health. Past Fellows have addressed health from a wide variety of perspectives and disciplines including, but not limited to, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine, music, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and social work. Applicants must be enrolled throughout the Fellowship year (May 2013-May 2014).  Applicants scheduled for a December graduation should contact the Program Director to determine if they are eligible for a waiver to this requirement.

Prospective Fellows should be prepared to partner with a local community agency and design a community service project that seeks to provide direct service to an underserved population. This project should focus on addressing health and/or the social determinants of health in the population served.

The project should:

  • Provide a direct service that meets a community-defined need and reflects national and local health priorities, such as Healthy People 2020. Prospective applicants should investigate and reflect on unmet local health-related needs, and think through the ways in which their own energies and talents might contribute, even in small ways, to ameliorating one or more of these problems.
  • Be of an enduring value to the community/agency served.  The project proposal should include a brief discussion about sustainability of the project at the end of the Fellowship year.

Finnegan 1L IP Diversity Scholarship

Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the world’s largest intellectual property firms, will begin to accept applications for its 1L Diversity Scholarship on December 1, 2013.  Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school in the JD class of 2016, must meet Finnegan’s hiring criteria (a degree in life sciences, engineering, or computer science, or substantial prior trademark experience), and must contribute to enhancing diversity.

The Finnegan Diversity Scholarship provides financial support to qualified diverse students who demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The Scholarship award of $15,000 may be applied to costs associated with normal tuition and fees (such as, but not limited to, student activity fees; law school or university fees, and administrative fees). The scholarship recipient will also join the firm as a 2015 summer associate in one of its domestic offices (Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Palo Alto, CA; Reston, VA; or Washington, DC).

In addition to a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law, selection criteria include exceptional academic performance at the undergraduate, graduate (if applicable), and law school level; a degree in life sciences, engineering, or computer science, or substantial prior trademark experience; relevant work experience; community service; leadership skills; and special accomplishments.

Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC): February 1, 2014

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference is job fair and an opportunity for students to interview and meet with government agencies and public interest employers for paid and unpaid legal positions next summer or for after graduation.  1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls can all participate.  The job fair will take place at Northwestern University School of Law on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

Student registration for this career conference is now closed. However, table talk is available at the job fair where students can meet with many of the employers, even if the student did not receive an interview in advance.  More information is available online at
