Resume books are open! Looking for a job? Be sure to put your Resume in the books

Spring Resume Books will be available starting on Thursday, January 23rd for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2012 and 2013 classes). Employers will be notified that resume books are available on February 3rd, but because employers may look at resumes any time throughout the semester, students are encouraged to opt-in if they are looking for an opportunity. Even if you have secured employment for this spring, keep in mind that spring resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Summer 2014.

A Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request, or viewed by employer who log-in to Symplicity at any time. Our resume books collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book).

Access 2 Practice Summer Legal Externship Program: Opportunities Available, Apply Now!

Access 2 Practice Legal Externship Opportunities for summer are available for your applications!

What is an Access 2 Practice Legal Externship? The Access 2 Practice Legal Externship is a 4 credit hour, non-graded, opportunity with a law firm or corporation this summer; or a government or legal aid organization year-round. For the law firm or corporate opportunities for the summer, students apply with a resume and cover letter by the deadline of March 18, 2014. At that time, all employers receive your materials and interviews take place during the following weeks. If you interview and accept the opportunity, you then enroll in the Legal Externship class for the summer.

Why Extern? To become a good lawyer and to supplement what you learn in the classroom, you need practical experience in real-world legal work. A2P presents a unique and important opportunity to gain exposure to an area of the law in which you are interested and helps you significantly broaden your future employment opportunities.

How do I find the Access 2 Practice Externships? Go to Symplicity, and search by Access 2 Practice Legal Externship - Summer. The entries titled "Summer 2014 A2P Legal Extern (For-credit Only)" are part of the Access 2 Practice Legal Externship program with an application deadline of March 18th. Check back often as additional Access 2 Practice Legal Externships will continue to be added throughout the coming weeks. Please note that entries not marked with this title, " Summer 2014 A2P Legal Extern (For-credit Only)," are not specific to Chicago-Kent students, are with government or legal aid organizations, and likely have a different application deadline set by the employer.

City of Chicago, Department of Law, Summer 2014 law clerk program deadline, March 1

The City of Chicago Department of Law invites law students to apply for its 2014 Summer Law Clerk Program. Usually, the program begins June 1st and is for a minimum of 10 weeks; however, the start date and duration of a law clerk’s summer will be determined by the law clerk and his/her direct supervisor. The Summer Program is designed to provide current law students with a challenging unpaid clerkship that reflects the demands and rewards of public service, as well as a realistic picture of what it is like to practice law for the City of Chicago. Participants in the Summer Program are not compensated. Some schools may offer students grants or allow for academic credit.

During the Summer Program, the law clerks will be assigned to work in one of the practice divisions in the law department and participate in a wide variety of activities including:

· assisting in trial preparation; attending depositions; observing real estate closings; attending client meetings and court proceedings; researching legal issues; and drafting memoranda, briefs and contracts.

Also, law clerks that have finished their second year of law school and qualify for an Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 license may represent the City in:

· mandatory tort arbitrations in the Circuit Court of Cook County; disciplinary hearings for the police and labor boards; and labor arbitration.

They may also depose or examine witnesses in trials in state and federal court.

During the summer, the Law Department will host a lecture series that feature speakers addressing legal
issues that affect the City in areas such as environmental and First Amendment law and provides the law clerks with opportunities to meet with City department officials and members of state and federal judiciary.

The Law Department seeks talented, promising individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many of our attorneys are active in civic and professional activities and organizations. Illinois Attorney General's Office, Summer 2014 intern deadline, March 1

The Illinois Attorney General's Office provides excellent opportunities for law students to improve their skills and knowledge in a wide range of subject areas, including consumer protection, government representation, civil rights, environmental enforcement, antitrust, complex civil litigation, civil and criminal appeals, and criminal law enforcement. Working closely with attorneys in the Chicago, Springfield, or Carbondale office, law clerks investigate facts, review documents, research legal issues, and draft legal memoranda, correspondence, and pleadings. Advanced students who qualify for a 711 license are encouraged to obtain such a license so that they may appear in court under the supervision of an Assistant Attorney General.

AT&T Legal Department, 2014 Diversity Summer Internship for 1L's: deadline March 11

AT&T encourages first year law students to apply for its 2014 Summer Internship Program. At AT&T, diversity and inclusion are essential to the company's culture and business success, and candidates should have an active commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession. The AT&T Summer Internship Program is designed to provide first year law students with an opportunity to develop both personally and professionally, as well as to gain experience by working in a Fortune 100 corporation's legal department. Interns are paid a competitive salary and are expected to work for 8-10 weeks over the summer.

In terms of practical experience, this program provides invaluable insight into the in-house practice and a well-rounded experience dealing with a variety of issues. In the past, interns were provided exposure to and given assignments in areas including Intellectual Property, Litigation, Regulatory, Interconnection Services, and Labor and Employment.

CBS Law Department Diversity Internship Program

The CBS Law Department is committed to creating and participating in programs designed to assist diverse individuals in obtaining the training, development and advancement opportunities necessary to succeed in the legal profession. To that end, the CBS Law Department has developed the CBS Diversity Internship Program with the goal of providing substantive experience and meaningful exposure to students of diverse backgrounds interested in learning about in-house practice. CBS defines diversity broadly to include not only its most “visible” aspects such as race and gender, but all of its aspects, such as age, physical disability, sexual orientation, religion, national origin and marital/parental status. All students with diverse
backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to be exposed to the various legal issues handled by in-house attorneys from across the Company. During the course of the internship, participants should expect to interact with attorneys handling matters pertaining to CBS’s various business entities, such as CBS Television and CBS Radio, Simon and Schuster, Showtime, and CBS Outdoor. Students should also expect to be exposed to several different practice areas while working under the supervision of attorneys from the Law Department’s Intellectual Property, Labor and Employment, and Litigation practice groups. Participants will be invited to join CBS attorneys in attending seminars on various legal issues in the media field,and luncheons with CBS attorneys will be arranged, allowing CBS attorneys to discuss their careers and to answer student questions in an informal setting.

The Program is open to students who will be 2Ls and 3Ls at the time of the internship.  The duration of the Program is for the summer session. The Program is unpaid and students will be required to receive academic credit from their law school for their participation in the Program. During the summer, students should expect to spend at least 20 hours per week at CBS. A prior background in media or news is not required. Deadline March 31, 2014. PILI's Law Student Internship Program connects law students from across the country with legal service agencies in Illinois. Interns work 400 hours full-time during the summer or 200 hours part-time during the school year, with PILI ensuring quality supervision by experienced agency attorneys, and providing extra educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

Volunteer: Center for Disability and Elder Law, Awards Benefit & 30th Anniversary Celebration

The Center for Disability & Elder Law (CDEL) requests Kent Law School students volunteer at CDEL’s 2014 Winter Awards Benefit & 30th Anniversary Celebration.  The fundraiser will take place at:

Volunteers will assist with the following tasks on the night of the event:  guest registration and greeting, raffle ticket sales, program distribution, ushering, and assisting the Executive Director.  Volunteers are expected to arrive by 4:30 p.m. for a short training meeting prior to the event.

This event is complementary to volunteers (tickets are regularly $100.00).  Volunteers can expect to work approximately 1/3rd of the evening, most beginning at 5:00 p.m., and are invited to network with hundreds of attorneys and enjoy complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres the remainder of the time.

Fellowships & Scholarships

Zelle Hoffmann 2014 Diversity in Law Scholarship

On behalf of the national law firm Zelle Hofmann, we are pleased to announce a call for applications for our 2014 Diversity in Law Scholarship.  The keystone of the firm's Diversity Outreach Plan, the Diversity in Law Scholarship was created for law students who either (1) are a member of a population or group whose background and perspectives are historically underrepresented in the private practice of law; or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship.

The scholarship awards the selected recipient a total of $30,000 to be applied towards the selected recipient's law school tuition, fees, and text books, with one half of the scholarship paid for the student's second year of law school and one half of the scholarship paid for the student's third year of law school subject to the following: To receive the second installment of the scholarship, the recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or its equivalent) through the student's second year of law school. Depending upon the firm's current needs, the Scholarship recipient may be offered, but is under no obligation to accept, a paid summer clerkship at one of the firm's offices for the summer following the student's first year of law school. The specific location of the potential clerkship will be decided by the firm in consultation with the student and will be based upon both the student's interest and the firm's need. Finally, in order to help ensure the recipient's successful entry into the legal profession, the firm will assign an attorney to mentor the recipient for the student's remaining law school career.

McGuireWoods 1L Diversity Scholarship

McGuireWoods is awarding up to 8 $5,000 scholarships this spring to diverse 1Ls. McGuireWoods’ annual Diversity Scholarship Program will award up to eight $5,000 scholarships to diverse current first-year law students with an expected graduation year of 2016, who are committed to contributing to and supporting diversity within the legal profession.
At McGuireWoods, we define diversity as recognizing and valuing the differences in our workforce. To us, diversity encompasses age, sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religion, sexual orientation, marital status and veteran status, as well as educational and professional backgrounds.

Register now: 2014 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 2014 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students interested in Intellectual Property, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.  Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program begins Monday, February 10 and closes on Monday, March 3.  Loyola will not accept late registrations so it is important the March 3rd deadline is met in order to participate in the interviews this summer.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.  The Patent Law Interview Program will be accepting registrations from:  JD students graduating in May/June 2015 (rising 3Ls); JD students graduating in May/June 2016 (rising 2Ls); JD students graduating in December 2014/January 2015 (3Ls); JD students graduating in December 2015/January 2016 (2Ls); and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs with anticipated graduation dates in 2015 and 2016 (LLMs)  For more information on the program, please refer to the Loyola Patent Program website at: http://www.luc.edu/law/career/patent_students.html.

Americorp JD: apply for financial support for students working with veteran's, disaster relief, or civil legal corp this coming summer 

AmeriCorpsJD, http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/americorpsjd. A student can apply for AmeriCorp JD funding for work in 3 areas:

1) Veterans Legal Corps
2) Disaster Legal Corps
3) Civil Legal Corps

To participate in Veterans or Disaster Legal Corps, the student needs to spend at least 50% of his or her time serving either veterans or victims of a federally recognized disaster. The applications are on a rolling basis.

To participate in Civil Legal Corps, the student can focus on a variety of legal issues, but will also provide support on a Veterans Toolkit for at least 20% of the student's required 300 hours of service (at least 60 hours). These applications are due April 15th, 2014.

AmeriaCorps JD provides a student with a $1175 Segal AmeriCorps Education award voucher that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans.

Equal Justice America: apply for funding if you are providing legal services to the poor this coming summer

Equal Justice America is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation established in 1993. EJA has become a national leader in providing opportunities for law students to work with organizations that deliver civil legal services to those most in need. Our efforts expose a new generation of future lawyers to the urgency for pro bono assistance to our most vulnerable citizens. Students at more than 70 law schools now have the opportunity to take part in the Equal Justice America Fellowship Program.
