Resume books are open! Looking for a job? Be sure to put your Resume in the books

Spring Resume Books are available  for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2012 and 2013 classes). Employers have been notified that resume books are available and may look at resumes any time throughout the semester, students are encouraged to opt-in if they are looking for an opportunity. Even if you have secured employment for this spring, keep in mind that spring resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Summer 2014.

A Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request, or viewed by employer who log-in to Symplicity at any time. Our resume books collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book).

Access 2 Practice Summer Legal Externship Program Opportunities Available

Access 2 Practice Legal Externship Opportunities for summer are available for your applications!

What is an Access 2 Practice Legal Externship? The Access 2 Practice Legal Externship is a 4 credit hour, non-graded, opportunity with a law firm or corporation this summer; or a government or legal aid organization year-round. For the law firm or corporate opportunities for the summer, students apply with a resume and cover letter by the deadline of March 18, 2014. At that time, all employers receive your materials and interviews take place during the following weeks. If you interview and accept the opportunity, you then enroll in the Legal Externship class for the summer.

Why Extern? To become a good lawyer and to supplement what you learn in the classroom, you need practical experience in real-world legal work. A2P presents a unique and important opportunity to gain exposure to an area of the law in which you are interested and helps you significantly broaden your future employment opportunities.

How do I find the Access 2 Practice Externships? Go to Symplicity, and search by Access 2 Practice Legal Externship - Summer. The entries titled "Summer 2014 A2P Legal Extern (For-credit Only)" are part of the Access 2 Practice Legal Externship program with an application deadline of March 18th. Check back often as additional Access 2 Practice Legal Externships will continue to be added throughout the coming weeks. Please note that entries not marked with this title, " Summer 2014 A2P Legal Extern (For-credit Only)," are not specific to Chicago-Kent students, are with government or legal aid organizations, and likely have a different application deadline set by the employer.

Application Process: Information and application packets for Summer and Fall 2014 are available in the Law Offices reception area (Room 600), in the Career Services Office, and on the table by the third floor elevators.

On Tuesday, March 4, at noon in room C25, Professor Vivien Gross will conduct an Informational Meeting for students who are interested in participating in the 2014 Summer or Fall Access2Practice Externship Program.

2014 Summer Access Program, Graduate ID program, and the Think Like a Lawyer Program, all designed to prepare students for practice. Stduents have full summer access to Lexis Advance and the spring training opportunities available. 2014 Fall Student Honors Program - U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals to join SEC’s Student Honors Program for Fall 2014. United State's Attorney's Office, Chicago, Externship Deadline for Fall semester April 16

The USAO for the Northern District of Illinois is responsible for prosecuting all federal crimes within the district. The Office also represents the United States and its departments and agencies in civil proceedings filed in federal court and in the Seventh Circuit. The Primary goals of the Law Student Intern Program are to provide law students with the greatest possible exposure to and participation in federal trial and appellate practice and to obtain excellent legal talent to assist this Office in handling its multitude of cases.
Qualifications: Students must be second-year or third-year law students by the beginning of the fall term. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Interns are not permitted to work in a legal capacity - private or public - during the internship.
Fall Internship – 16 hours per week for 12 weeks
Application Materials: Resume, personal statement reflecting your background and your interest in participating in this program, legal writing sample, three letters of recommendation (preferably legal), and law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable).

CBS Law Department Diversity Internship Program

The CBS Law Department is committed to creating and participating in programs designed to assist diverse individuals in obtaining the training, development and advancement opportunities necessary to succeed in the legal profession. To that end, the CBS Law Department has developed the CBS Diversity Internship Program with the goal of providing substantive experience and meaningful exposure to students of diverse backgrounds interested in learning about in-house practice. CBS defines diversity broadly to include not only its most “visible” aspects such as race and gender, but all of its aspects, such as age, physical disability, sexual orientation, religion, national origin and marital/parental status. All students with diverse
backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The Program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to be exposed to the various legal issues handled by in-house attorneys from across the Company. During the course of the internship, participants should expect to interact with attorneys handling matters pertaining to CBS’s various business entities, such as CBS Television and CBS Radio, Simon and Schuster, Showtime, and CBS Outdoor. Students should also expect to be exposed to several different practice areas while working under the supervision of attorneys from the Law Department’s Intellectual Property, Labor and Employment, and Litigation practice groups. Participants will be invited to join CBS attorneys in attending seminars on various legal issues in the media field,and luncheons with CBS attorneys will be arranged, allowing CBS attorneys to discuss their careers and to answer student questions in an informal setting.

The Program is open to students who will be 2Ls and 3Ls at the time of the internship.  The duration of the Program is for the summer session. The Program is unpaid and students will be required to receive academic credit from their law school for their participation in the Program. During the summer, students should expect to spend at least 20 hours per week at CBS. A prior background in media or news is not required. Deadline March 31, 2014. PILI's Law Student Internship Program connects law students from across the country with legal service agencies in Illinois. Interns work 400 hours full-time during the summer or 200 hours part-time during the school year, with PILI ensuring quality supervision by experienced agency attorneys, and providing extra educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

Zelle Hoffmann 2014 Diversity in Law Scholarship

On behalf of the national law firm Zelle Hofmann, we are pleased to announce a call for applications for our 2014 Diversity in Law Scholarship.  The keystone of the firm's Diversity Outreach Plan, the Diversity in Law Scholarship was created for law students who either (1) are a member of a population or group whose background and perspectives are historically underrepresented in the private practice of law; or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship.

The scholarship awards the selected recipient a total of $30,000 to be applied towards the selected recipient's law school tuition, fees, and text books, with one half of the scholarship paid for the student's second year of law school and one half of the scholarship paid for the student's third year of law school subject to the following: To receive the second installment of the scholarship, the recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or its equivalent) through the student's second year of law school. Depending upon the firm's current needs, the Scholarship recipient may be offered, but is under no obligation to accept, a paid summer clerkship at one of the firm's offices for the summer following the student's first year of law school. The specific location of the potential clerkship will be decided by the firm in consultation with the student and will be based upon both the student's interest and the firm's need. Finally, in order to help ensure the recipient's successful entry into the legal profession, the firm will assign an attorney to mentor the recipient for the student's remaining law school career.

McGuireWoods 1L Diversity Scholarship

McGuireWoods is awarding up to 8 $5,000 scholarships this spring to diverse 1Ls. McGuireWoods’ annual Diversity Scholarship Program will award up to eight $5,000 scholarships to diverse current first-year law students with an expected graduation year of 2016, who are committed to contributing to and supporting diversity within the legal profession.

Reed Smith's 2014 Diverse Scholars Program

Reed Smith has a strong commitment to diversity which has resulted in a firm in which diversity and inclusion permeate the culture.  Rewarding young future leaders for their efforts in the area of diversity and introducing them to the Reed Smith culture are two important goals of this program

 The Diverse Scholars Program provides two $15,000 awards toward tuition for the second year of law school, as well as a paid summer associate position after completion of the second year of law school.  The program is open to first-year law students who have demonstrated excellent academic scholarship and a commitment to diversity, inclusion and community.

Scholarship applicants must submit a resume, a completed application, a personal statement, law school transcript, undergraduate transcript and a legal writing sample as part of the application process.    

Summer associate positions in 2015 are available in:  Chicago; Richmond, VA; Los Angeles; San Francisco; New York City; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Houston; and Washington, D.C.  Applications must be postmarked by August 4, 2014.

CCBA Minority Job Fair: Registration Opens April 1st

The Cook County Bar Association ("CCBA") is pleased to invite minority J.D. students (Class of 2016 and Class of 2015) to participate in the 31st Annual CCBA Minority Law Student Job Fair ("Job Fair"). Please note that students graduating in any month prior to December 2013 (current 3Ls) are not eligible. All participating students must be from fully accredited law schools.

This year's Job Fair will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014. For more information, please see visit the CCBA informational website at www.ccbaminorityjobfair.org.  The CCBA Job Fair primarily is designed to obtain summer associate positions for rising 2Ls (current 1Ls) during their second summer in law school. A limited number of employers also wish to interview rising 3Ls (current 2Ls) for entry-level associate positions. Rising 3Ls please be aware that Job Fair interview slots for rising 2Ls typically outnumber those for rising 3Ls by a 3:1 ratio.

The Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Summer Fellowship Program provides a grant of $5,000 each to two students at the Chicago-Kent College of Law who have secured unpaid public interest legal positions during the summer.  These two Stevens Fellowships are awarded to help defray living expenses of deserving and committed students working in the public interest, as well as to provide much-needed legal assistance to public interest organizations.

For application information please log-in to Symplicity, go to the "Resources" tab, Document Library under “Justice Stevens Fellowship Application.” Hard copies of the application packet are also available outside Prof. Nancy Marder’s office (839).

Deadline, Tuesday April 1, at noon. You will need an offiical transcript, which may take several days, be sure to give yourself enough time.

Americorp JD: apply for financial support for students working with veteran's, disaster relief, or civil legal corp this coming summer 

AmeriCorpsJD, http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/americorpsjd. A student can apply for AmeriCorp JD funding for work in 3 areas:

1) Veterans Legal Corps
2) Disaster Legal Corps
3) Civil Legal Corps

To participate in Veterans or Disaster Legal Corps, the student needs to spend at least 50% of his or her time serving either veterans or victims of a federally recognized disaster. The applications are on a rolling basis.

To participate in Civil Legal Corps, the student can focus on a variety of legal issues, but will also provide support on a Veterans Toolkit for at least 20% of the student's required 300 hours of service (at least 60 hours). These applications are due April 15th, 2014.

AmeriaCorps JD provides a student with a $1175 Segal AmeriCorps Education award voucher that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans.
