On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, the Career Services Office will present a mandatory program for current 1L students on the job opportunities and career deadlines coming up in the fall. Current 1L students are required to attend this program.

Make-up Procedures: What's Next For Fall: Rising 3Ls (Required program for current 2Ls)

The video and handouts from "What's Next For Fall: Rising 3Ls" (an April 1 program for rising 3L (current 2L) students) are available online. Chicago-Kent has a NEW online video viewing website, go to http://kentlaw.hosted.panopto.com and login with your Chicago-Kent username and password.

Current 2L students who were unable to attend the "What's Next For Fall: Rising 3Ls" program on April 1 must watch the 30 minute video online and print and complete the "Student Registration Form" located to the right of the video. Please complete and return this form to the CSO offices (suite 360) by Friday, April 25, 2014.

Resume books are open! Looking for a job? Be sure to put your Resume in the books

Spring Resume Books are available  for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2012 and 2013 classes). Employers have been notified that resume books are available and may look at resumes any time throughout the semester, students are encouraged to opt-in if they are looking for an opportunity. Even if you have secured employment for this spring, keep in mind that spring resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Summer 2014.

A Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request, or viewed by employer who log-in to Symplicity at any time. Our resume books collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book).

Summer 2014: All Access to Lexis Advance (R)

2014 Summer Access Program, Graduate ID program, and the Think Like a Lawyer Program, all designed to prepare students for practice. Stduents have full summer access to Lexis Advance and the spring training opportunities available. Summer 2014: All-Access to Lexis Advance (R) 1Ls & 2Ls: Students may continue to use their current Lexis Advance (R) Id for any purpose including work they perform at a law firm, corporation or government agency.

On Thursday, April 10th, Major McKissack of the US Air Force JAG will be on campus to speak with students individually about opportunities with the JAG Corps. The Legal Profession PREP CLASS is a new program to help Chicago-area law students and recent graduates gain skills, find legal jobs, and perform them well from the start. April 12: CBA YLS Government Service Career Fair

If you are considering a career working for the government, attend the YLS's Annual Government Service Career Fair on Saturday, April 12, 2014  from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the CBA Building, 321 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. The Fair will begin with a panel discussion on legal careers in public service followed by an opportunity to meet representatives from local government offices. Resumes will be accepted at the discretion of the agencies.  The cost to attend the fair is $15 for a CBA Member, and $30 for a Nonmember. 

Please note that the event is not a job fair but a forum to introduce law students and young lawyers to the various careers available in government service.

Apply by April 9 for Fall 2014 Semester Law Firm Associate Program

Chicago-Kent’s Semester Law Firm Associate Program (SLFAP) is open to students in their second and third years.  Students selected as Fall 2014 Semester Associate externs work for academic credit (without pay) as “Associates” for participating firms, tackling a variety of litigation and transactional projects and learning about life in a law firm.  This is a terrific opportunity to learn more about your own strengths, and to make an impression on the lawyers with whom you come into contact, even though there is no expectation of future employment.  You can read more on Symplicity job posting # 17643.

If you are interested in applying for a Fall 2014 SFLAP externship with one of the firms listed below, email a current resume and unofficial transcript to Professor Gross (vgross@kentlaw.iit.edu) no later than noon on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.  Please indicate to which firm(s) you wish to apply, and, where appropriate, to which area of law.

Semester Associate externs receive 6 credits and will be expected to devote 24 hours a week during the semester to the fieldwork component.  Students gain experience and perspective from work on different aspects of litigation and transactions, and firms strive, to the extent possible, to expose students to a range of legal problems demanding different skill sets or competencies.  In addition to their fieldwork, externs will submit activity reports and journal entries for purposes of the accompanying classroom component, scheduled on designated Thursdays from 4:00-4:55 p.m.

Firms will conduct their own selection and screening process. If you receive an offer to extern, you must respond to that offer within 3 days.  You cannot withdraw after you have accepted an offer.  Please contact Prof. Gross immediately if you are selected.

Apply by April 14 for Google Policy Fellowship

The Google Policy Fellowship program offers students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer working on these issues at public interest organizations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. Students will work for 10 weeks over the summer of 2014.  Google will provide a stipend of $7,500 USD to each Fellow for the summer.  Applications for North America are due by midnight, Pacific Standard Time, on Monday, April 14, 2014

In order to participate in the program, you must be a student. Google defines a student as an individual enrolled in or accepted into an accredited institution including (but not necessarily limited to) colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs. Eligibility is based on enrollment in an accredited university by January 1, 2014.

You may be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student. You must be eligible and authorized to work in the country of your fellowship. Google cannot provide guidance or assistance on obtaining the necessary documentation to meet this criteria.

Apply by April 15 for AmeriCorps JD Funding

AmeriCorps JD provides a student with a $1175 Segal AmeriCorps Education award voucher that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans. Learn more here: http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/americorpsjd.

A student can apply for AmeriCorp JD funding for work in 3 areas:

1) Veterans Legal Corps
2) Disaster Legal Corps
3) Civil Legal Corps

To participate in Veterans or Disaster Legal Corps, the student needs to spend at least 50% of his or her time serving either veterans or victims of a federally recognized disaster. The applications are on a rolling basis.

To participate in Civil Legal Corps, the student can focus on a variety of legal issues, but will also provide support on a Veterans Toolkit for at least 20% of the student's required 300 hours of service (at least 60 hours). These applications are due Tuesday, April 15th, 2014.

Apply by April 16 for Fall Externship in US Attorney's Office in Chicago

The USAO for the Northern District of Illinois is responsible for prosecuting all federal crimes within the district. The Office also represents the United States and its departments and agencies in civil proceedings filed in federal court and in the Seventh Circuit. The Primary goals of the Law Student Intern Program are to provide law students with the greatest possible exposure to and participation in federal trial and appellate practice and to obtain excellent legal talent to assist this Office in handling its multitude of cases.
Qualifications: Students must be second-year or third-year law students by the beginning of the fall term. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Interns are not permitted to work in a legal capacity - private or public - during the internship.
Fall Internship – 16 hours per week for 12 weeks
Application Materials: Resume, personal statement reflecting your background and your interest in participating in this program, legal writing sample, three letters of recommendation (preferably legal), and law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable).
All application packages must be submitted by post-mail to the district contact by Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals to join SEC’s Student Honors Program for Fall 2014. McGuireWoods 1L Diversity Scholarship

McGuireWoods is awarding up to 8 $5,000 scholarships this spring to diverse 1Ls. McGuireWoods’ annual Diversity Scholarship Program will award up to eight $5,000 scholarships to diverse current first-year law students with an expected graduation year of 2016, who are committed to contributing to and supporting diversity within the legal profession.

Reed Smith's 2014 Diverse Scholars Program

Reed Smith has a strong commitment to diversity which has resulted in a firm in which diversity and inclusion permeate the culture.  Rewarding young future leaders for their efforts in the area of diversity and introducing them to the Reed Smith culture are two important goals of this program

 The Diverse Scholars Program provides two $15,000 awards toward tuition for the second year of law school, as well as a paid summer associate position after completion of the second year of law school.  The program is open to first-year law students who have demonstrated excellent academic scholarship and a commitment to diversity, inclusion and community.

Scholarship applicants must submit a resume, a completed application, a personal statement, law school transcript, undergraduate transcript and a legal writing sample as part of the application process.

Register Now: CCBA Minority Job Fair

The Cook County Bar Association ("CCBA") is pleased to invite minority J.D. students (Class of 2016 and Class of 2015) to participate in the 31st Annual CCBA Minority Law Student Job Fair ("Job Fair"). Please note that students graduating in any month prior to December 2013 (current 3Ls) are not eligible. All participating students must be from fully accredited law schools.

This year's Job Fair will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014. For more information, please see visit the CCBA informational website at www.ccbaminorityjobfair.org.  The CCBA Job Fair primarily is designed to obtain summer associate positions for rising 2Ls (current 1Ls) during their second summer in law school. A limited number of employers also wish to interview rising 3Ls (current 2Ls) for entry-level associate positions. Rising 3Ls please be aware that Job Fair interview slots for rising 2Ls typically outnumber those for rising 3Ls by a 3:1 ratio.
