Information & Announcements

Welcome New Assistant Dean Jayne Schreiber

The Career Services Office welcomes new Assistant Dean Jayne Schreiber. Ms. Schreiber’s most recent role was Director of Employer Outreach and Associate Director of Career Services at Loyola University Chicago School of Law where her portfolio included counseling students, developing career and professional networking programs, private practice and corporate in-house employer outreach, including efforts to forge relationships with JD-advantaged employers (e.g., project management, accounting, and compliance). Welcome, Jayne!

Welcome 1Ls!

Welcome to your first year at Chicago-Kent! We look forward to assisting you in reaching your career goals.

According to guidelines adopted by the National Association of Legal Professionals (NALP), to which Chicago-Kent College of Law, as well as all other ABA-accredited law schools subscribe, 1Ls cannot meet individually with a career services advisor until October 15th and cannot initiate contact with or interview with a prospective employer until December 1st.  However, there are still many things you can do to start planning for your future career.

  • Attend CSO panels and career development workshops during the fall semester
  • Check our Record page often for updated information on upcoming programs
  • Research various career paths and talk to attorneys and upperclassmen to come up with a list of practice areas and practice settings that interest you
  • Finally, attend the mandatory orientation (watch for the date, coming soon!) in September to learn how to prepare the materials you'll need for your job search

We hope you have a great first semester, and we look forward to seeing you in October!

Federal Work Study for Fall 2015 - Apply NOW! (deadline August 28)

Chicago-Kent will have Community-Based Federal Work Study available during the Fall 2015 semester.  Chicago-Kent 2L & 3L students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school.  A limited amount of funds are available, and students who have a federal work study award must secure their job placement by the deadline.  Please visit the Chicago-Kent Community-Based Federal Work Study webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate.  Forms are due in the Career Services Office by Friday, August 28, 2015.  Please e-mail Michelle Vodenik (mvodenik@kentlaw.iit.edu) with any questions.

Fall Resume Books NOW OPEN!

Fall Resume Books are now available for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2014 and 2015 classes). Employers will be notified that resume books are available soon, but because employers may request a resume book at any time, students are encouraged to opt-in to desired resume books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this fall, keep in mind that fall resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Spring or Summer 2016.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

Mandatory Meetings for 2Ls and 3Ls

Each 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor by the end of this fall semester.  For those of you interested in applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting as soon as possible!

Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you check in with your career advisor to form a strategy to accomplish your career goals.  Please bring your most recent, updated legal resume with you to your meeting with your career advisor.

Please include from what source you obtained the interview/offer (OCI, resume collect, CCBA job fair, Loyola Patent Fair, etc.).  We keep track of these in order to determine how students are doing and where our students end up working during the summer/after graduation.  Also, if you have any concerns about how your interviews are progressing or questions about the interview process, please make an appointment to talk with a career advisor.

Be sure to check OCI interview schedules for changes in rooms, times, interviewers, etc.

Please remember to check Symplicity frequently during the 2015 Fall Recruiting process.  Changes to room numbers, interviewers, and possibly even changes to your interview schedule itself may occur at any point in the recruiting process. The CSO will not always be able to send out emails regarding such changes unless entire interview schedules are canceled. Department of Justice: The Attorney General's Honors Program - Application period closes September 8

Many distinguished attorneys began their careers through the Attorney General’s Honors Program -- the largest and most prestigious federal entry-level attorney hiring program of its kind.

Eligibility for the Honors Program
Eligibility is generally limited to graduating law students and recent law school graduates who entered judicial clerkships, graduate law programs, or qualifying legal fellowships within 9 months of law school graduation and who meet additional eligibility requirements.

Participating Components
Every year, various components and U.S. Attorneys' Offices hire entry-level attorneys through the Honors Program. New for 2015:  INTERPOL Washington, U.S. National Central Bureau Office of General Counsel and the FBI, Office of General Counsel.

Selection Criteria
Justice takes pride in the fact that we consider the “whole candidate” when making selections for employment. Selections are made based on many elements of a candidate’s background including a demonstrated commitment to government service, academic achievement, leadership, law review or moot court experience, legal aid and clinical experience, past employment, and extracurricular activities that relate to the work of Justice and the relevant component.
Every year the Department hires a significant number of entry-level attorneys through the Honors Program. Selectees represent diverse backgrounds and  interests and come from law schools throughout the country.  The Honors Program is centrally managed by the Office of Attorney Recruitment and Management, but each participating component reviews the applications submitted and makes independent hiring decisions.

How to Apply
Candidates interested in starting their career as an entry-level attorney with Justice must apply through the Attorney General’s Honors Program via an on-line application. For employment beginning in 2015, the application opens on July 31, 2015, and closes on September 8, 2015  We highly recommend that applicants read the application tips and checklist and assemble requested information before starting the online application.  If you need an accommodation in order to complete the application, please contact Deana Willis at (202) 514-3397 for assistance.
