Public Interest Resource Center (PIRC) hosts office hours in the CSO

The Public Interest Resource Center (PIRC) will host office hours in the Career Services Office (Suite 360) on:

If you are interested in volunteering or pro bono projects please visit the PIRC counselors during office hours or visit the PIRC webpage to be added to the PIRC newsletter and to track your volunteer hours. Students who compete 50 hours, or 250 hours, receive an award for their service at a Public Interest Awards ceremony held April.

Fall Resume Books NOW OPEN!

Fall Resume Books are now available for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls, 3Ls and Recent Graduates (2014 and 2015 classes). Employers will be notified that resume books are available soon, but because employers may request a resume book at any time, students are encouraged to opt-in to desired resume books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this fall, keep in mind that fall resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Spring or Summer 2016.

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Our resume books will collect the resumes of students and recent graduates in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then notify employers who fit those criteria that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

Mandatory Meetings for 2Ls and 3Ls

Each 2L and 3L student is required to meet with his or her assigned career advisor by the end of this fall semester.  For those of you interested in applying to larger federal government agencies with early deadlines (e.g. the Department of Justice), or considering participation in the fall public interest job fair Equal Justice Works, we strongly recommend that you schedule this meeting as soon as possible!

Given the difficult market it is more important than ever that you check in with your career advisor to form a strategy to accomplish your career goals.  Please bring your most recent, updated legal resume with you to your meeting with your career advisor.

ABA Offers Free Memberships For Law Students

Effective immediately, the American Bar Association will offer free memberships to all students enrolled in law school. State Farm's Corporate Law Department is hiring two second-year law students for a ten week intern program at an annualized compensation rate of $82,000.

Judicial Externships Informational Meeting

Judicial Externship Program (JEP) is a 4-credit hour Pass/Low Pass/Fail program open to students who have completed at least their first full year of law school and want to do legal research and writing for a federal appellate, district or magistrate judge or designated Illinois appellate or circuit court judges.

JEP enables a student to become involved in particular legal problems through research and writing, and to contribute to the resolution of those problems by participating in drafting memoranda and opinions. Depending upon the judge, an extern may also have the opportunity to observe from a unique perspective that judge’s day-to-day routine and to discuss with him/her the issues and problems that judges confront.  Take advantage of this prestigious learning opportunity while enhancing your marketability in the legal world.

2016 Presidential Management Fellows Program - Applications Period runs September 28-October 13

Bearing the Presidential moniker, the PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. It was created more than three decades ago by Executive Order and has gone through many changes over the years. The Program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is really designed with a more narrow focus - developing a cadre of potential government leaders. It provides some sustenance during the first years of employment and encourages development of leadership capabilities. The PMF Program inculcates a lasting bond as well as a spirit of public service, ultimately encouraging and leading to a career in the government.

What will  you give?

You will give the best you have to give to a cause greater than yourself. You will bring fresh, new ideas and a willingness to take on challenges never dreamed possible.  Your zeal for the position will serve to spark new energy and excitement in your co-workers. As part of the PMF "fraternal order," you will portray your elite status through the quality of your work and service to your country. You will need to demonstrate leadership, foster teamwork, set goals and, in the end, deliver something of value to the American people.

In addition to salary and benefits, the PMF Program gives you a lot in return for your hard work. Your two-year appointment will provide a fast-paced opportunity to gain experience and develop your talents. 2016 City of Chicago Mayor's Office Fellowship Program - Applications due November 4th

The Office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, City of Chicago is in the process of recruiting graduate students for the 2016 Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program.

The Mayor's Office Fellowship Program is a wonderful opportunity for graduate students in any concentration who will be enrolled during the summer and are interested in local government and public policy. Fellows have the opportunity to learn about municipal government and participate in a unique, hands-on experience in the development of new policy and program initiatives. Participants research policies and evaluate their potential benefit to Chicago, draft memoranda for Mayor’s Office senior staff on upcoming issues and new initiatives, and participate in a variety of talks and tours that provide insight into how City government operates.

Selection Process

This year, the Mayor’s Office will again be participating in the two-step application process. Prospective Fellows should visit www.cityofchicago.org/mayorfellowship to begin the application process. Initial applications will be screened for qualification and applicants will be selected to move on to the Second Step of the application process which includes submitting:  a written response to a policy problem and a personal statement to the Mayor’s Office directly. Applicants who reach the Second Step will also be interviewed and based upon the results of the interview process and written documents, a final selection of fellows will be made. Specific details can be found at www.cityofchicago.org/mayorfellowship.

Candidates are selected on a nationwide basis from public and private colleges and universities. Candidates must be current students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.0 on a 5.0 scale. Fellows are not classified as full-time employees. Residency in the City of Chicago is required upon starting the fellowship program. Relocation is at the applicant’s expense. Fellows are paid at a rate of $20 per hour.

International students must have an F-1 Student Visa and must be a full-time student. International students are required to have a social security number/card which states “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.”

Students who are Deferred Action Recipients are eligible to apply. Students must provide their Employment Authorization Document at the time of hire. In addition, if a student is selected for a Fellowship Position, they must also have a social security card.  If they do not have a social security card, they can obtain one by following the instructions on this link:  http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/deferred_action.pdf

Securities and Exchange Commission Spring 2016 Student Honors Program - Application period closes September 30

Do you want to perform challenging work in a professional environment? Begin by investing in your career and future at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)!

The SEC is seeking bright, innovative, results-oriented individuals for its 2015 Fall Honors Program. The 2016 Spring Honors Program offers law students robust responsibilities and experiences that enhance their legal careers. Over the course of the ten-week program, students work with Commission staff on projects particular to the specific Division or Office to which they are assigned. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in seminars/workshops, roundtable discussions, a mentoring program, and tours that will provide detailed information and guidance on securities laws. Specific duties and responsibilities will vary according to the office or division of assignment.  See here for more information and to apply.

PILI 2015 - Apply Now!

PILI’s online application system is now open for the 2015 Fall Semester. The agencies that will host fall Interns are: Coordinated Advice Referral Program for Legal Services (CARPLS), Center for Disability & Elder Law, Chicago Legal Clinic, Inc, Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, Equip for Equality, LAF Chicago, and the National Immigrant Justice Center. PILI Interns work 200 hours during the 2015 Fall Semester in return for a $2,500 stipend.  

In order to apply for the PILI stipend, all applicants must go through the online application system. Applicants must first register with www.IllinoisProBono.org, and may only apply once they have had their registration confirmed. Faegre Baker Daniels 2L Diversity Fellowship - Application Now Available

Faegre Baker Daniels invites second-year law students committed to contributing meaningfully to diversity and inclusion in the legal profession to apply for its 2015 Diversity & Inclusion Fellowship program.

FaegreBD offers up to four Fellowships annually that provide professional experience and mentorship to second-year law students from populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

Fellowship awardees will each receive:

  • A 10-week paid summer clerkship as a summer associate in the firm’s Chicago, Denver, Des Moines, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Silicon Valley or South Bend office in 2016.
  • Formal education, training programs and hands-on legal experience through FaegreBD’s summer program.
  •  Guidance from a mentor lawyer.
  •  A $10,000 stipend at the conclusion of the summer associate term.
  •  Eligibility for consideration for full-time employment as an associate with the firm.

Sidley has long been one of the most prominent and progressive proponents of law and diversity. Our mission is to attract and retain outstanding lawyers of varied backgrounds who reflect the global marketplace that we serve. Through the leadership of our Diversity Committee and Committee on Retention and Promotion of Women, we are working to become a more diverse and inclusive organization.

To further promote diversity within the legal profession and to support Sidley’s diversity policies, the firm created the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship Initiative for second year law students. Sidley will award a limited number of Diversity & Inclusion Scholarships in the amount of $20,000 (less any applicable withholdings and taxes) to selected 2016 Sidley summer associates.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

A Scholarship applicant must:

  • Be a full-time law student in your second year of classes at an accredited law school.
  • Submit the following documents: Current law school transcript with all first year grades;
    • Resume;
    • Completed application form; and
    • Personal statement (500 words or less) addressing what you believe demonstrates your qualification for the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship, including, potentially, a description of your academic and personal strengths; exceptional contributions, through community service or otherwise, to the cause of diversity; and/or how you have overcome adversity, such as a personal or family history of educational or socioeconomic disadvantage, and have demonstrated the tenacity and talent to excel in the legal profession.

Scholarship recipients will be selected from among the eligible applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities and who also have demonstrated exceptional ability, including through:

  • Demonstrated contributions to diversity initiatives or to diversity and inclusion more generally, such as in the area(s) of racial or ethnic diversity, sexual orientation or gender identity, disability, veteran status, and/or other areas underrepresented or otherwise important to diversity in the legal profession; and/or
  • Other extraordinary contributions or accomplishments; and/or
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome adversity, such as first-in-family college attendance or socioeconomic disadvantage; and/or

Past participation in and/or interest in assisting with the diversity and inclusion initiatives of the firm such as the Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative or a Sidley 1L Diversity Summer Mentorship Program.

Expectations of Scholarship Recipients

Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship recipients must join Sidley’s summer associate program after their second year of law school.

The Sidley Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship is intended to defray the costs of the recipients’ legal education.

Application Timeline

Given the highly selective nature of the Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship and the limited number of Scholarships available, students are encouraged to submit applications at their earliest convenience. We strongly prefer to receive the application by the time of the candidate’s call-back interview.

Please note that the Scholarship application is not an application for employment. You must apply separately for a summer associate position.

2015 Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Minority Scholarship due October 1

Minority students who have completed their first year of law school are eligible to apply for the Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Minority Scholarship Program. Two $15,000 scholarships will be awarded to students participating in our 2016 Summer Associate Program(one in our Chicago office and one in our New York office. The recipients will be selected based on several criteria, including superior academic achievement, leadership experience and personal qualities that reflect the potential for outstanding contributions to Katten and to the legal profession. Skadden Fellowship - Applications due October 6

The Skadden Fellowship applications are due October 6, 2015.  The Skadden Fellowship Program, described as "a legal Peace Corps" by The Los Angeles Times, was established in 1988 to commemorate the firm's 40th anniversary, in recognition of the dire need for greater funding for graduating law students who wish to devote their professional lives to providing legal services to the poor (including the working poor), the elderly, the homeless and the disabled, as well as those deprived of their civil or human rights. The aim of the foundation is to give Fellows the freedom to pursue public interest work; thus, the Fellows create their own projects at public interest organizations with at least two lawyers on staff before they apply.

Fellowships are awarded for two years. Skadden provides each Fellow with a salary and pays all fringe benefits to which an employee of the sponsoring organization would be entitled. For those Fellows not covered by a law school low income protection plan, the firm will pay a Fellow's law school debt service for the tuition part of the loan for the duration of the fellowship.  Fellows will be notified by December 4.

Equal Justice Works (EJW) invites you to join them for the 2015 Conference and Career Fair. Each year, the EJW Conference and Career Fair brings together 1,200 law students with more than 125 public interest employers from around the country under one roof.  The EJW annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest national public interest legal career fair in the country.  More than 1,200 students from 165 law schools attend for two days of interviews, workshops, networking and other career opportunities.  Public interest employers conduct interviews for internship and full-time positions and meet with students in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities.  The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and more.

The Government Honors and Internship Handbook and the (separate) Public Policy Handbook are now available!  To access the handbooks, use the link, login and password, which can be found in the Document Library in Symplicity.  Note that many 3L/post-grad government honors program and 2L summer/semester internship program deadlines are very early in the semester; log in now to avoid missing an opportunity!
