Summer Resume Books Now Open!

Summer Resume Books are now available for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls and rising 3Ls. Employers were notified that Resume Books are available on Wednesday, June 1, so students are encouraged to opt-in to desired Resume Books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this Summer, keep in mind that Summer resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Fall 2016!

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Resume Books will collect the resumes of students in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then employers who fit those criteria will be notified that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

Listserv Registration and Testing

The Career Services Office used the student registration forms from the recent “What’s Next for Fall” programs to create listservs for the classes of 2017 and 2018. The Career Services Office will use these listservs to send important relevant email updates to students during the summer and 2016-2017 school year.

CSO Open All Summer Long

The Career Services Office remains open with its regular hours throughout the summer, and continues to provide students and graduates with counseling, resume review, and other services.  Please do not hesitate to set up an appointment, call or email!

You can set up an appointment through Symplicity. Once you are logged in, you can click the "Request a Counseling Appointment" link on the right side of the page to view your counselor's availability and make an appointment.

 Praxis Certificate Program: Enrollment is Now Open

Considering your course registration options for fall? Do you learn well by "doing," and want to distinguish yourself with potential employers? Consider the Praxis Certificate. The Praxis Certificate is designed for students who are interested in fully embracing a practice or experience-based course of study, including simulation courses, clinics, and externships. In addition to completing 24 credits in approved experiential coursework, Praxis students learn about some of the most important “practice competencies” of successful attorneys, chart their progress toward developing these skills, and learn how to package and market their experience to potential employers. As part of the required 24 credits, Praxis students also complete the required course "Practice and Professionalism," which satisfies the school's professional responsibility requirement. 

Online enrollment is required, but does not a commit a student to complete the program. The program is open to all day and evening students with at least three semesters of study remaining as of Fall 2016. Students may enroll in Praxis concurrently with other Chicago-Kent certificate programs. For more information, or to enroll online, click here. Interview Preparation and Mock Interviews Available Through the CSO

The Career Services Office is available to review student resumes and cover letters, and to conduct mock interviews, to help you better prepare for a variety of opportunities! If you have an upcoming interview, please consider scheduling a mock interview with your Career Services counselor. You can schedule an appointment directly through Symplicity! If you have questions about how to schedule an appointment, please email the Career Services Office at kentcso@kentlaw.iit.edu.

Community Based Federal Work Study Available for Summer 2016

Chicago-Kent will have Community-Based Federal Work Study available during Summer 2016. Chicago-Kent students who are Federal Work Study eligible may be paid though Federal Work Study funds to work at government and public interest organizations outside of the law school. Please visit the Chicago-Kent Community-Based Federal Work Study webpage for a more detailed explanation of this opportunity, as well as the form you need to complete in order to participate. Forms were due in the Career Services Office by Friday, May 6th 2016 for Summer 1, starting work on Monday, May 23rd, and will be accepted on an ongoing basis for Summer 2, starting work on July 1 or later. Processing time may take a week or more; allow plenty of time for approval of your application, and the time it takes to be added to the Chicago-Kent payroll. Mark Your Calendar - Fall Recruiting Important Dates

Several important Fall Recruiting dates and deadlines come up fast during the Summer! 

Much of “Fall” Recruiting takes place in early August, and there are several important due dates in June and July.  Be sure to watch your kentlaw.iit.edu email for updates and information about Fall Recruiting.  Also, regularly check the OCI tab of Symplicity and the CSO Fall Recruiting website for information as well as tips on how to prepare application documents and research employers.

Important Fall Recruiting Dates:

Monday, June 6, 2016: Resume Reviews begin. All first-time program participants must have a mandatory resume review by a Career Advisor. 

Monday, June 6, 2016: Information on employers participating in Fall Recruiting will be available on Symplicity.  This information will include application documents to be submitted, hiring eligibility requirements (e.g. class rank) and on-campus interview dates.

Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 12:00pm and 5:30pm: MANDATORY Fall Recruiting Program. This program will provide information regarding registration requirements and participating employers.  If you plan to participate in Fall Recruiting, you must attend one of these sessions.  

Friday, July 1, 2016, 12:00pm:  Resume Reviews end.  Resumes must be reviewed and uploaded to Symplicity by 12:00pm.  

Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 12:00pm:  Bidding system will be open for student bid entry.  Students may begin bidding on interviews with employers in Symplicity for OCI and Resume Collect Employers.

Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at 12:00pm: Deadline to enter all computer bids, upload all required application materials to Symplicity, and turn in all hard copy registration materials to the CSO.

August 1-5, 2016:  Mock Interviews will be available. Interview slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-ups will be managed online; more information will be available at the June 7th program. 

Friday, August 5, 2016: Student interview schedules will be available for online viewing.

Monday, August 8, 2016: On-campus interviews begin.

ABA Law Student Podcast: Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you plan to go into public service, you may have heard about public service loan forgiveness (PSLF for short). This economic incentive offers student loan forgiveness following a minimum period of service and on-time payments towards the borrower’s debt. The cost of this benefit is aimed at making public work more attractive.

In this extended two-segment episode of ABA Law Student Podcast, hosts Fabiani Duarte and Madison Burke interview Bryan Tyson, the executive director of the Georgia Public Defender Council and Jonathan Rapping, co-founder of Gideon’s Promise. 

In segment one, you will hear from Bryan about the debt to income gap, his organization’s survey of public defenders about PSLF, and the increased importance of public defenders outside the practice of law.

In segment two, you will hear from Jonathan about student debt’s barrier to public service, the lifelong commitment of student loans, and concerns about poor people not getting justice in the event of PSLF cuts or caps.

Air Force JAG Corps 2016 Fall Externship - Applications due June 24, 2016

The Air Force Judge Advocate General‘s Corps is currently seeking applications for its 2016 fall unpaid externship program at participating Air Force installations across the country. The Air Force JAG Corps provides full-spectrum legal advice to military commanders. As an extern, you will gain hands-on experience in diverse areas of legal practice while learning more about the Air Force and the JAG Corps. The program is an excellent way to gain exposure to substantive legal work while serving alongside active duty Air Force Judge Advocates. Positions are available for full-time or part-time work for 16 weeks during the 2016 fall semester.

As an extern, you will work under attorney supervision in numerous practice areas of the JAG Corps including, but not limited to:

• Preparing criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs and opinions, conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses
• Assisting attorneys who counsel and represent Airmen, their family members and retirees in personal legal matters in areas such as family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant law, tax, bankruptcy, immigration and naturalization law, and military administrative law
• Supporting attorneys in other areas, such as federal tort claims, government procurement law, employment law, international law, environmental law and operational law

Requirements:

• U.S. Citizen (birth or naturalization)
• Able to obtain law school credit or law school permission for your externship
• Work part-time (16+hrs) or full-time for up to 40 hours a week for 16 weeks

U.S. Attorney’s Office Spring 2017 Law Student Intern Program - Applications due September 2, 2016

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois offers intern positions to 12-18 law students during the Spring semester. Students are required to work 16 hours a week for 12 weeks.

The work of law student interns includes assisting in all aspects of trial preparation, legal research, writing memoranda of law, drafting pleadings and appellate briefs, assisting in preparation and taking of depositions, assisting in pre-trial conferences and the trials of civil and criminal cases.

Fellowships & Scholarships

2017 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship - Applications due June 17, 2016 

Baker Donelson is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where individual differences are understood, respected, appreciated, and recognized as sources of strength of the Firm. These qualities enrich the work environment. With this in mind, Baker Donelson will again award three scholarships to diverse law students who will complete their first year of law school by June 2016. Recipients will be awarded a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position for the summer of 2017 in one of the Firm’s offices. Additionally, each recipient will be awarded $10,000 which will be paid prior to the student's third year of law school to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses.

Reed Smith Diverse Scholars Program for 1Ls - Applications due July 25, 2016

The Reed Smith Diverse Scholars Program provides an award in the amount of $20,000 and a summer associate position to two law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The award is to be used to defray necessary expenditures related to the recipient’s legal education and will be paid in addition to the summer associate salary. Summer associate positions in 2017 are available in the following Reed Smith offices: Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. Applicants must accept Reed Smith’s offer to join the 2017 Summer Program following the completion of their second year of law school.

National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Job Fair - July 12, 2016 - Deadline to Register is July 1

The National Black Prosecutors Association (NBPA) cordially invites students to participate in its Annual Job Fair on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Hilton Ballpark, St. Louis Missouri. The goal of the National Black Prosecutors Association’s (NBPA) Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels.

The NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization comprised of over 800 prosecutors. Its mission is to recruit, train, and advance the careers of minority attorneys as prosecutors at all levels of government. The annual convention serves not only as a job fair forum, but as a comprehensive legal training program for prosecutors. This year’s 33rd Annual Conference will run from July 10, 2016 to July 16, 2016.

At the culmination of the Job Fair, there will be a reception for all Job Fair participants and Convention attendees. The reception will afford Job Fair attendees an additional opportunity to further network with prospective employers and experienced prosecutors. In addition to the Job Fair reception, all Job Fair participants are invited to attend a free career seminar entitled “Strategies for a Successful Interview”. The seminar will take place on Monday, July 11th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the Hilton Ballpark, and will provide Job Fair participants with effective interviewing techniques. Job Fair attendees are also welcome to attend the entire conference. Students and 2016 law school graduates are invited to attend Conference seminars for free. However, other events, such as luncheons, dinners and receptions, must be paid for separately.

Bay Area Diversity Career Fair - July 23, 2016 - Deadline to Register is June 12

The Bay Area Diversity Career Fair attracts hiring representatives from the most prominent law firms, government legal departments, and nonprofit organizations. Only law students who have completed their first year of law school by the time of the interviews are eligible to participate. Openings are for 2017 2L summer associate positions.

Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair - July 29, 2016 - Deadline to Register is June 10

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair will be held on July 29, 2016 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair provides an excellent forum for legal employers, law students and law school graduates to meet and discuss employment options with the goal of expanding opportunities and assisting the legal profession in fulfilling its commitment to diversity. Legal employers attending the RMDLCF seek to hire law students and graduates from diverse backgrounds who have been traditionally under-represented in the practice of law in the Rocky Mountain region. These include candidates who are ethnic or racial minorities, disabled, and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer or transgender.

Law students and recent law school graduates are invited to register and attend the RMDLCF and to apply for twenty-minute scheduled interviews with participating employers. Candidates may also have the opportunity to informally talk with employers at their exhibitor tables.

Indianapolis Bar Association Diversity Job Fair - August 1 & 2, 2016 - Deadline to Register is June 18

The 9th annual Indianapolis Bar Association Diversity Job Fair has a strong history of success. Nearly 600 students from 82 schools across the nation have interviewed over the last eight years, and 20 percent have accepted job offers. There will be:

• Numerous networking opportunities available for students through a reception, interviews and a luncheon
• More than 25 firm, government, court and corporate legal employers conducting hundreds of interviews with students
• A student workshop focusing on presenting oneself in interviews and social media

About the Diversity Job Fair 

Employers are seeking candidates who represent all aspects of diversity and who are looking for a one-of-a-kind legal community in a Midwestern city that has both cosmopolitan style and small-town charm. Full-time 2L law students (graduating May 2018) and part-time 2L and 3L law students (graduating 2018/2019) are invited to participate in the fair.

The Boston Lawyers Group Job Fair for Law Students of Color - August 2, 2016 - Deadline to Register is July 4

The Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is a consortium of over 40 of the largest law firms, government agencies, and corporations in Boston. Its mission is to promote the hiring, retention, and professional development of attorneys of color in its member organizations. A primary goal of the BLG is to increase the number of law students of color that member organizations hire for their Boston office. One of the significant ways in which this goal is accomplished, is through member participation in the annual BLG Boston Job Fair. Employers who participate in the job fair hire for positions in their Boston office unless specified. Employers will interview rising second year law students and rising third year law students in 4-year programs for 2017 summer associate/law clerk positions.

The BLG Boston Job Fair will take place on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, 39 Dalton St., Boston, MA.

Loyola Patent Law Interview Program - August 4 & 5, 2016

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 2016 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday and Friday, August 4-5 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LL.M. programs.

Last year roughly 140 employers, 190 law schools, and 1,300 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and transcripts to bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the materials of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

National LGBT Bar Association’s Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair - August 4-6, 2016 - Deadline to Register is July 22

The National LGBT Bar Association’s annual Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair is designed to achieve a sense of community and inclusion for LGBT candidates within the legal profession’s recruiting efforts. By participating in this career fair, candidates will talk directly to LGBT-friendly recruiters from law firms, government agencies, LGBT rights groups, and corporate legal departments.

Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference - August 5, 2016

The Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference (MMRC) is an annual event that connects the largest legal employers in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area with diverse rising 2L and 3L candidates from around the country. Each year’s conference and job fair includes between 25 and 30 employers and upwards of 100 law students.

Employers participating in the interviews will include small, medium and large firms; corporate law departments; and public interest, nonprofit and government entities. The conference is sponsored by Twin Cities Diversity in Practice but is a unique opportunity to interview with both private law firms and local government employers. During lunch, students enjoy a discussion on key issues relevant to their job search and building a successful career.

The 2016 Minority Recruitment Conference is to be held at St. Thomas University on Friday, August 5, 2016.

Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair (HDLJF) - August 5 & 6, 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri - Deadline to Register is June 24

The 12th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair (HDLJF) will be held August 5 & 6, 2016, in Kansas City, Missouri. Students who are interested in becoming part of Kansas City’s dynamic legal community should strongly consider attending this event. Students who will be returning to school in August and those graduating in May are eligible to attend the job fair, as employers will be interviewing for both summer and post-graduate positions.

The HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal associations, and corporate legal departments coming together to encourage law students to practice law in Kansas City. The HDLJF is designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to both traditional and non-traditional legal employers. In addition, the event is a great way to network and learn more about living in Kansas City. Cook County Bar Association Minority Law Student Job Fair - August 12, 2016

The Cook County Bar Association (“CCBA”) is pleased to invite you to participate in the 33rd Annual CCBA Minority Law Student Job Fair (“Job Fair”). In an effort to keep the student-to-employer ratio as low as possible, CCBA is only inviting JD students in the classes of 2018 (current 1Ls/rising 2Ls) and 2017 (current 2Ls/rising 3Ls). Please note that students graduating in any month prior to December 2016 (current 3Ls) are not eligible. 

This year’s Job Fair will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that the Job Fair will return to the Embassy Suites Chicago – Downtown/Lakefront, located at 511 N. Columbus Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60611. 

The Job Fair typically attracts more than 500 students from eligible U.S. law schools. Each year law firms, corporations, and governmental agencies register for the Job Fair. These employers are located primarily in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C. In addition, the Job Fair attracts several employers from Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

The Job Fair primarily is designed to obtain summer associate positions for rising 2Ls (current 1Ls) during their second summer in law school. A limited number of employers also wish to interview rising 3Ls (current 2Ls) for entry-level associate positions. Rising 3Ls should be aware that Job Fair interview slots for rising 2Ls typically outnumber those for rising 3Ls by a 4:1 ratio.

St. Louis Diversity Job Fair - August 13, 2016 - Deadline to Register is June 10

Students in the classes of 2017 and 2018 are invited to participate in the St. Louis Diversity Job Fair. The Job Fair will kick-off with small group student attorney networking dinners on Friday, August 12, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (locations to be announced) and interviews will be held Saturday, August 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Thompson Coburn law offices, One US Bank Plaza, St. Louis, Missouri. Specific details regarding both events will be posted on the St. Louis Diversity Job Fair website at www.stldiversityjobfair.com as they become available.

The deadline for law student registration is Friday, June 10, 2016 at midnight. All students must be registered by this date in order to participate in the Job Fair. Law students can register for the 2016 St. Louis Diversity Job Fair by going to https://law-sldjf-csm.symplicity.com/. It may take up to one business day to get your initial registration approved. The same applies for resume and additional documents approval. When registering, students will be asked to provide the name of a contact in the school's Career Services office. The St. Louis Diversity Job Fair offers full or partial financial stipends to students who would be unable to attend the Job Fair without the financial assistance. The deadline for submitting the financial stipend application is Friday, July 1, 2016 at midnight.

Hispanic National Bar Association Career Fair - September 9, 2016 - Deadline to Register is July 15

The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) invites students to participate in the HNBA Career Fair, the nation’s largest career fair for Hispanic law students and legal professionals, at the 2016 HNBA Annual Convention on Friday, September 9, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. 

The HNBA Career Fair is open to all students. This signature HNBA program will provide students with an unparalleled opportunity to meet and interview with some of the nation’s most respected law firms, companies, organizations and government agencies.   

Early registration is now open! Deadline to Register is Friday, July 15, 2016. In order to participate in the HNBA Career Fair, students must register for the 2016 HNBA Annual Convention. Upon registering, students will be e-mailed a link to sign up for the Career Fair.
