Information & Announcements

Summer Resume Books Now Open!

Summer Resume Books are now available for “opt-in” for all rising 2Ls and rising 3Ls. Employers were notified that Resume Books are available on Wednesday, June 1, so students are encouraged to opt-in to desired Resume Books as soon as possible. Even if you have secured employment for this Summer, keep in mind that Summer resume books may be used by employers for hiring for Fall 2016!

As a reminder, a Resume Book is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of resumes that can be distributed to employers on request. Resume Books will collect the resumes of students in a particular class (e.g. 2Ls) with similar interests (e.g. immigration law, real estate law, or working in the northern suburbs), and then employers who fit those criteria will be notified that the books are available for review. These books can also be used when an employer calls up our office looking for a particular type of student to clerk for them (“We are looking for a 3L interested in litigation who has worked as a 711 clerk.”), so that we can respond quickly and efficiently to employer requests (in that case by looking at the 3L Litigation Resume Book for students who have been 711 clerks).

For more information about Resume Books, click here.

ABA Law Student Podcast: Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you plan to go into public service, you may have heard about public service loan forgiveness (PSLF for short). This economic incentive offers student loan forgiveness following a minimum period of service and on-time payments towards the borrower’s debt. The cost of this benefit is aimed at making public work more attractive.

In this extended two-segment episode of ABA Law Student Podcast, hosts Fabiani Duarte and Madison Burke interview Bryan Tyson, the executive director of the Georgia Public Defender Council and Jonathan Rapping, co-founder of Gideon’s Promise.

In segment one, you will hear from Bryan about the debt to income gap, his organization’s survey of public defenders about PSLF, and the increased importance of public defenders outside the practice of law.

In segment two, you will hear from Jonathan about student debt’s barrier to public service, the lifelong commitment of student loans, and concerns about poor people not getting justice in the event of PSLF cuts or caps.

The Summit is the only conference to convene students from around the country who share a passion for all things food law – last year’s Summit brought together 100 law students from 50 law schools! Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Clerkship Program - Applications due July 22, 2016

The Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges. Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with selected students, and consider them for full-time clerkship positions. At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB. Rising 2Ls and 3Ls interested in federal clerkships should apply. Most clerkships are for one-year terms starting in 2017.

Six federal district judges will be conducting a regional round of interviews in connection with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program this fall in Alexandria, Virginia. Fourteen students will be selected to interview. The interview will occur in Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday, August 13, 2016.

Applications are due by Friday, July 22, 2016 (4:00 p.m.). Click here for more information.

Additionally, for the first time this year, JTB-STW will—in addition to its usual Federal District Court Clerkship Program—offer a Clerkship Application Process for Federal Magistrate and Bankruptcy Judges. The deadline to apply to JTB-STW’s new Magistrate and Bankruptcy Judge Clerkship Program is Friday, August 26, 2016. JTB will release more specific details on this program soon. Please note, the JTB-STW District Judge Clerkship Program and the new JTB-STW Magistrate and Bankruptcy Judge Clerkship Program are two separate programs—acceptance into one does not guarantee acceptance into the other. Applicants are highly encouraged to apply to both.

Ropes & Gray Roscoe Trimmier Jr. Diversity Scholarship - Applications due August 19, 2016

Ropes & Gray has long been a proponent of law firm inclusion and diversity, with a dedicated mission to attract and retain outstanding lawyers of varied backgrounds. To further promote inclusion and diversity within the legal profession, the firm created the Roscoe Trimmier Jr. Diversity Scholarship, named after its beloved retired partner. Mr. Trimmier was the firm’s first African American partner and a leader of its efforts.

This scholarship provides a $25,000 award to up to five outstanding second-year law students to offset the expenses of their legal education, and includes a paid summer associate position following completion of the second year of law school. The funds will be paid out half upon completion of the summer program, and half upon starting as a full-time associate at the firm. The scholarship will be awarded to applicants who exemplify the accomplishment, leadership and dedication that were the hallmarks of Mr. Trimmier’s life, and who are members of populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

Applications are due Friday, August 19, 2016. Given the highly selective nature of the scholarship and the limited number of scholarships available, students are encouraged to submit applications early. The firm strongly encourages students who are unable to visit Ropes & Gray through an on-campus recruiting program to submit their applications before Friday, July 15, 2016. For more information about the scholarship, please click here or email trimmierscholarship@ropesgray.com

Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.
