New Public Interest Loan Repayment Opportunities for Alumni

Michelle Vodenik, Public Interest Career Advisor and member of the LRAP Advisory Committee, discusses the new Chicago-Kent Loan Repayment Assistance Program, the new federal College Cost Reduction Access Act, as well as other loan repayment opportunities offered by states, legal aid organizations and federal government employers that alumni with high debt and low salaries may benefit from learning about.

Managing Debt for a Public Interest Career

A common concern among law students is how they will manage their student loan payments on a public interest/government salary. Public Interest Career Advisor, Michelle Vodenik, and 3rd year law student, Jill Roberts, discuss: the new federal College Cost Reduction Access Act (CCRAA), which will lower monthly payments and forgive federal student loans after 10 years; Chicago-Kent’s new Loan Repayment Assistance Program; Other loan repayment assistance programs offered by states, legal aid organizations and federal government employers; and strategies for reducing the amount of debt you owe through scholarships and fellowships while you are in law school.

Preparing your Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Application

Original Program Date: 10/9/2007 The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) offers $5,000 internships for students who spend their summer at one of their designated Chicago-area legal aid organizations. Last summer, five Chicago-Kent students received PILI internships, and last spring three Chicago-Kent students received semester PILI internships. In this video, hear from an employer who reviews PILI applications and several students who were successful at obtaining a PILI internship.
