Do Your Legal Career Justice: Opportunities for Attorneys and Law Students at the U.S. Department of Justice

Original Program Date: 08/26/09
The United States Department of Justice, the federal government's law firm and the world's largest legal employer, offers many opportunities to law students in almost every area of law. This program featured a presentation by Carla Stern, Anti-Trust Division Chicago, Joanna Brinkman (’09) who will begin her career with the Environmental and Natural Resources Division this fall, Michael Kereluk, 3rd year law student who spent his summer in the Civil Division Immigration Litigation Office, and Jacqueline Zablocki, who spent her summer in Immigration Court with the Executive Office of Immigration Review.

Professionalism Series Part 2: Social Networking On-Line

As social networking options like Facebook, Twitter, blogging and LinkedIn continue to grow so do the opportunities to use these sites to increase your own network of contacts in the legal world. Unfortunately, the long shelf life and informal nature of these sites also can lead to embarrasing and potentially self-sabatoging incidents. Have you done everything possible to protect your personal web presence from the eyes of the general public, including prospective employers? On the flip side, have you considered creating a positive career-related blog or other on-line presence to enhance your chances of landing the best job possible after graduation?

Alternative Career as a Diplomat

Original Program Date: 10/19/09
Amy Unander, Vice Consul, American Embassy, Kingston, Jamaica discusses her path to a career in the Foreign Service. In September 2008, Amy Unander began serving as a Vice Consul at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica. In addition to her consular duties, Amy has participated in outreach programs to groups of visiting American citizens, has given radio and television interviews and recorded a public service announcement. She acted as the control officer for National Security Advisor General Jones at the Summit of Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, and provided support for a visiting delegation of U.S. Representatives in Jamaica. As an Economic Tracked Officer, Amy also works with the Political-Economic section to conduct research, write cables, and attend meetings.

One of the most important career strategies is building meaningful relationships with as many people as possible, yet many don’t know where to start, or how fun and easy this can be. The vast majority of jobs are obtained through relationships. This is true in every area of law practice, as well as alternative careers. People like to help people that they know, and employers are more likely to consider candidates who are recommended to them.

This program covers resources and strategies available to you as a Chicago-Kent student to meet professionals and build relationships in a natural and fun way. Workshop on Dealing with a Bad Economy

This program is designed to help current students and recent graduates tackle the challenges they face when conducting a job search in an economic downturn in a productive and healthy way. Speakers include:
Susan Mendelsohn, Esq. of Legal Inc.: Addresses the current market and creative strategies for marketing yourself to legal employers;
Tiffany Nelson: A 2002 Kent graduate who faced her own search in a difficult economy and who talked about her own strategies for networking into a great job;
Gary Bailey with the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council: A 1986 graduate of Kent who faced his own search in a difficult economy and who talked about his own strategies for networking into a great job;
Jonathan De La Cruz from Access Group: Addressed how to negotiate a change in your loan payment structure, how to request deferment, and ideas for living more simply while looking for a job or working at a job with a less than ideal salary;

CSO Workshop: How to Handle Assignments

Original Program Date: 04/08/09
Christopher A. McVety, a partner in the Chicago office of Reed Smith LLP and a member of the Corporate & Securities Group in the Business and Finance area, spoke about what to expect when receiving assignments as a summer associate or law clerk. He addressed such topics as:

  • What information do you need to ask for at the initial assignment meeting;
  • How much follow-up is too much?
  • How often should you check in with the assigning attorney?
  • What should the finished product look like?
  • How to handle constructive criticism and edits; and
  • How to make sure that you get the best reviews of your work product this summer

Mandatory Fall OCI Program

Original Program Date: 04/07/09
During August and September, legal employers will either visit our campus to interview students or request resumes from students for summer associate and entry-level attorney positions. A member of the CSO will discuss the on-campus interview process, what types of employers participate, how to contact employers directly, what to do if you do not meet a particular employer's hiring criteria, and how to prepare over the summer. This year’s OCI program will begin on August 17th through September 4th. Since interviews will begin before classes start, it is imperative that students understand the requirements and deadlines for participation, which will be discussed at the program.

This program is MANDATORY for all first-time OCI participants.

Please note: If you plan to graduate in May 2010 or December 2009 and are interested in working for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office after graduation, you must participate in OCI and register for an on-campus interview with their office in order to be considered for employment.

Preparing your PILI Application

The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) offers $5,000 internships for students who spend their summer at one of their designated Chicago-area legal aid organizations. Last summer, eight Chicago-Kent students received PILI internships, and last spring three Chicago-Kent students received semester PILI internships. Hear from an employer who reviews PILI applications and several students who were successful at obtaining a PILI internship.

Managing Debt for a Public Interest Career

A common concern among law students is how they will manage their student loan payments on a public interest/government salary. Public Interest Career Advisor, Michelle Vodenik, and 3rd year law student, Jill Roberts, discuss: the new federal College Cost Reduction Access Act (CCRAA), which will lower monthly payments and forgive federal student loans after 10 years; Chicago-Kent’s new Loan Repayment Assistance Program; Other loan repayment assistance programs offered by states, legal aid organizations and federal government employers; and strategies for reducing the amount of debt you owe through scholarships and fellowships while you are in law school.
