Workshop on Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Contamination
On November 8-11, 1998, the Institute
for Science, Law, and Technology (ISLAT) sponsored a limited-invitation
workshop on Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Contamination.
The workshop was attended by approximately 20 experts in genetics, epidemiology,
law, and ethics. The experts came from major research labs and centers
around the country as well as the USEPA and the National Institute for
Environmental Health Sciences. After hearing about the current state
of knowledge and policy in genetic research about susceptibility to chemicals,
epidemiological studies about actual exposure to pollution, and current
ethical and legal policies, the group discussed likely future developments
and outlined a white paper to guide future research efforts of ISLAT and
its affiliates. For the law school faculty who attended (Professor
Lori Andrews,
Professor Stuart
Deutsch, Professor Debbie
Musiker, and Professor Dan
Tarlock), the workshop provided exciting, surprising information about
where scientific research is going, how much has been learned, and how
far behind the legal system is in responding to and incorporating the new
information.
The workshop was organized by Professor Stuart Deutsch of Chicago-Kent
and Professor Demetrios Moschandreas, Assistant Chair of the Department
of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Deputy Director of ISLAT.
