Ukraine/Kosovo Trip
In early December, a team from Chicago-Kent, comprising team leader Professor
Molly Lien, Professor Richard Kling, Director of Operations and Law Librarian
Gretchen Van Dam, and Dean Perritt spent several days at the University
of Internal Affairs in Kharkiv Ukraine, as part of a joint project funded
by the United States Information Agency. Over the next three years
faculty and students from each institution will work together to use information
technology, particularly the World Wide Web to improve the dissemination
of legal information in Ukraine, to make effective use of forensic science
in the criminal justice system in Ukraine, and to improve educational resources
at the University of Internal Affairs, with appropriate use of distance
learning technology.
In early December, Dean Perritt and 3L Scott Waguespack went to Pristina
Kosovo, and met with the Prime Minister of the Interim Government, the
Minister of Reconstruction and Development, and the General Director of
the Host and Telecommunications System to provide technical assistance
on near term improvements and the telecommunications infrastructure, including
deployment of an Internet backbone, and development of a strategy for rapid
economic development with the use of appropriate legal frameworks to attract
private sector investment.
Internet Conference in Lublin
On December 16, Dean Perritt gave a virtual speech for the Second Annual
Internet Law Conference at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, organized
in part by Professor Warner. The keynote speech was delivered from
the 5th floor of 565 West Adams to an audience physically located at the
University of Lublin in Poland.
AALS Annual Conference
At the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools at the
beginning of January, Professors’ Hill, Conviser, Voges, Staudt, Nahmod,
and Dean Perritt made formal presentations.
Zia Hassan's Departure
Zia Hassan has informed Lew Collens and me of his intent to step down from
his position of Dean of Stuart Graduate School of Business in order to
pursue his research interest and devote more time to teaching. He
has agreed to serve as dean until a new dean is in place. President
Collens and Dean Perritt hope that Dean Hassan will accept some special
assignments related to overall strategy for the university. Under
Dean Hassan's leadership the Stuart Graduate School of Business has significantly
improved its quality, launched a number of new specialized masters programs,
and begun an intensive and far reaching strategic planning process to define
the future of the school. Particularly significantly, Dean Hassan
provided the perseverance and leadership to obtain accreditation for the
school as one of the 23 accredited graduate schools of business in the
United States.
Mickie Voges' Position Change
Professor Mickie Voges has resigned as Director of the Downtown Campus
Information Center, which comprises the Chicago-Kent Law Library, the Stuart
Graduate School of Business Library, and the Library of International Relations.
Gretchen Van Dam has agreed to serve as Interim Director, beginning on
a date to be determined in further discussions during the spring semester.
