Illinois Appellate Court Visit
On Tuesday, February 22, Chicago-Kent once again hosted a sitting of the Appellate Court of Illinois, First District. An overflow audience packed the Courtroom to hear two civil appeals and one criminal appeal argued in front of Presiding Justice Robert Cahill and Justices Anne Burke, David Cerda and Warren Wolfson. (Justice Burke is a Chicago-Kent graduate, and Justice Wolfson heads our Trial Advocacy Program.) The Justices graciously stayed after the final argument and answered questions on appellate practice.
Tuesday's visit was an excellent opportunity for students to see real appellate advocates in action before a very well-prepared bench. Many students in the audience will soon be doing their first moot court oral argument as part of the Legal Research and Writing Program's Charles Evans Hughes Competition. I hope that those of you who could not attend Tuesday's court session will find time to visit either the Appellate Court of Illinois or the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit or one of the area's trial courts to see how the lessons you are learning at Chicago-Kent are put into practice every day.
Institute for Law and the Workplace Event
On Tuesday, February 22, Paul Igasaki, the Vice Chair of the U.S. Equal
Employment Opportunity
Commission was a guest at the law school. Mr. Igasaki discussed
the role and future of the EEOC at a breakfast meeting with members of
the Institute for Law and the Workplace and at a luncheon with students
and faculty. Mr. Igasaki is the second highest ranking official with
the EEOC, the federal agency which administers Title VII of the 1964 Civil
Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the employment provisions
of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Equal Pay Act.
International War Crimes Documentation IPRO Team
On February 21 and 22, students from Chicago-Kent's International War Crimes
Documentation IPRO team, traveled to Washington, D.C. were they meet with
Patrick Ball, Ph.D., Deputy Director of Science and Human Rights at the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. The students
also worked with members of the War Crimes division of the American Bar
Association's Central and East European Law Initiative (ABA CEELI).
The students presented the war crimes documentation database to these organizations
and learned how to make the design the most effective. The students
will now finalize the database before it is presented this summer to members
of the international community, including the International War Crimes
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
