Justice Web Collaboratory
Advisory Board Meeting
Chicago-Kent hosted the inaugural meeting of the Justice Web Collaboratory
Advisory Board on April 1, 2000. The advisory board consists of a
diverse group of judges from across the country. Amongst its ranks
are Chief Judges from the Court of Appeals of two federal districts, Appeals
Judges from two states, the Chief Judge of the Navajo Nation Supreme Court,
and several state Superior and Circuit Court Judges. In addition,
several guests joined the advisory board's discussions, including representatives
from the American Judges Association, Judicial Division of the American
Bar Association, Federal Judges Association, and the Office of Justice
Programs, Department of Justice.
Chairman, Associate Justice George Nicholson from the California Third
District Courts of Appeal, opened discussions by challenging the participants
to assist in changing the way judges think about technology and educate
judges on the implications of technology on the bench and in chambers.
This challenge resonated throughout the days discussions which can be broken
down into several themes: (i) good governance; (ii) education; (iii) collaboration;
(iv) public access to the courts; and, (v) information integration.
All of the participants left the meeting encouraged by the possibilities
for judicial education, collaboration, and excited about providing judicial
leadership for the Office of Judicial Programs' National Integration Resource
Center.
By the end of the day, it was clear to all that attended that the Advisory
Board meeting brought together a team of judges that were willing to dream,
work together, and help one another, their respective courts, and, indeed,
all the judges and courts of the nation, to look higher and reach further,
technologically, in coming years.
The Future of Public Sector Labor
Management Relations Conference
On April 13-15, Chicago-Kent hosted a 3-day conference on “The Future of
Public Sector Labor-Management Relations: Working Together to Achieve Excellence
in the 21st Century.”
It was cosponsored by the University of Washington, Cornell University,
the Ford Foundation, and Chicago-Kent College of Law. The conference
featured, among others, former Secretary of Labor John Dunlop, EEOC Commissioner
Paul Steven Miller, Theodore Kheel, and MIT Professor Thomas Kochan.
Chicago Database Summit
On Thursday, April 20 and Friday, April 21, GLAPI hosted meetings
on our war crimes documentation database. Many refer to these meetings
as the Chicago Database Summit, or CHIDASU.
Attendees included Scott Carlson, Wendy Betts and Sarah Warner from
ABA/CEELI in Washington, and Julie Chadbourne from the ABA War Crimes Documentation
office in Tirana, Albania. We finalized revisions to the current
database and “unveiled" the new generation database that the IPRO and Julian
Mulla have been working on.
General Augusto Pinochet
On Tuesday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m., the law school will be hosting Juan
Garces, the leader of the multi-national legal team that represented nearly
3,000 cases of assassination, forced disappearance and torture in the Spanish
case against General Augusto Pinochet.
This event is being cosponsored by Chicago-Kent College of Law and the
Heartland Alliance and will be broadcast via the World Wide Web.
