Centennial Visitor Stanley Katz
Chicago-Kent's Centennial Visitor this year was the legal historian Stanley
N. Katz. A faculty member of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton
Univeristy, Professor Katz, among his many other accomplishments, had served
for twelve years as the president of the American Council of Learned Societies.
During his three days at Kent (from October 25-27), Professor Katz: delivered
a lecture on "Constitutionalism and Civil Society"; presented a faculty
workshop on "Information Technology in Higher Education"; visited Professor
Sarah Harding's class on Comparative Constitutional Law; and met with the
Honors Students and commented on their presentations. In addition,
he participated in five faculty roundtables: Professor Harding and her
student Jon Neuleib's projects on comparative constitutional law; Professor
Fred Bosselman and Visiting Professor Peter Orebech's book project on customary
law and sustainable development; Professor Hal Krent's project on the President's
conditional pardon power; Professor Evelyn Brody's project on freedom of
association; and Professor Graeme Dinwoodies's project on the effect of
digital technology on the development and content of intellectual property
rights. In addition to the draft papers that Professor Katz presented,
a selection of his published writings on constitutional equality, philanthropy,
and conflict resolution are on reserve in the Library under "Centennial
Visitor."
Ukranian Visitor
The law school was visited last week by General Pavel, Ivanovich Orlov
and Alexander Mikhailovich Lugansky who are from the University of Internal
Affairs of Ukraine. Their visit is in conjunction with a grant from
the United States’ State Department to assist the University in purchasing
equipment for DNA testing in criminal and civil proceedings in Ukraine.
They are looking at the Chicago-Kent computer network and hope to establish
a computer database in Ukraine containing all Ukrainian Law. While
here, they have visited with both suburban and city police headquarters
and with the US Attorney’s office cyber crime division. They have
also visited the FBI and various local police officials. The grant was
obtained last year by Professor Molly Lien, who administered the project.
Wisconsin Bar Results
100% of Chicago-Kent applicants passed the July Wisconsin Bar exam.
The overall first-time pass rate was 77.33%.
Fall Lecture Event
Auditorium
October 31- 12 noon - 1:00p
This year's Fall Lecture will feature a debate between three panelists
of differing political ideologies. They will focus on the issues
that will clearly define the upcoming political elections.
From the Republican side we have Rich Williamson who currently serves
as the chairman of the Illinois Republican Party and as a Partner at Mayer,
Brown & Platt. Mr. Williamson is a former U.S. Ambassador, Assistant
Secretary of State, an Assistant to President Reagan and the Republican
Candidate for the U.S. Senate from Illinois in the 1992 election cycle.
From the Democratic side we have David Wilhelm, the National Campaign Manager
for the 1992 Clinton/Gore campaign and a former chairman of the Democratic
National Committee. Mr. Wilhelm is currently the President of Wilhelm
and Conlon Public Strategies. Finally, from the Green Party we have
Dan Johnson-Weinberger who is Ralph Nader's Illinois Campaign Coordinator.
As a special treat, this event is being Moderated by WGN Radio Talk
Show host Milt Rosenberg who will broadcast the event on his program Extension
720 later that evening and take phone calls from the listening public.
In addition there is a possibility that we may be able to get C-SPAN to
cover what we think will be a great event.
There will be a reception to follow in the Foyer and this event is open
to the public.
Thanks for your time in helping us get the word out about this great
event.
