Institute for Law and the Humanities

The Institute for Law and the Humanities sponsored and organized a Chicago-Humanities Festival program on Parody and the First Amendment, specifically Alice Randall's The Wind Done Gone. This is the second year in a row we have organized a Humanities Festival program. Sheldon Nahmodwas the main organizer of the event and also served as moderator. The panel was very well-attended and the three panelists, Professor Wendy Gordon (Law, BU, speaking on copyright) Professor Lucius Outlaw
(Chair of the African American Studies program, Vanderbilt, speaking on race issues), and Professor Greg Pingree (from here, Chicago-Kent, speaking on parody) all spoke very well and wove their presentations together nicely.

Kosovo Trip

The region of Kosovo, currently under the control of the United Nations, is rebuilding its criminal justice system after a period of bloody ethnic conflict between the Serbian and Albanian residents of the area with support from the United States Departments of State and Justice. This new system will require attorneys to be more active in investigating their cases and questioning witnesses. In order to enhance the trial skills of the Kosovar attorneys Prof. Douglas Godfrey and an experienced federal prosecutor were invited to conduct four days of trial training with experienced Kosovar lawyers to enhance their legal skills. The training was a great success with both Serbian and Albanian lawyers given mock closing arguments at the end of the session.
