Commencement Speaker
I am pleased to announce that Barack Obama will be this
year’s Commencement speaker. Barack Obama, D-Chicago,
is the Illinois State Senator for the 13th District, representing
areas of Chicago’s South Side. Obama impressed the speaker’s
committee and the SBA with his energy, commitment to public
service, and vision. Senator Obama earned his B.A. in
Political Science from Columbia University in 1983, and
his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991, graduating magna
cum laude. While at Harvard, Obama served as the first
African-American president of the Harvard Law Review,
and perhaps just as importantly, Obama had the distinction
of working with Professor Mark Rosen on the review! Elected
in 1996 to the Illinois State Senate, Obama is now serving
his third term -- his legislative focus includes campaign
finance and ethics reform, job training and workforce
preparation, public school funding and accountability,
welfare reform, tax accountability and fairness, economic
development and technology access, and juvenile justice
issues. Obama received the 1995 Legal Eagle Award from
IVI-IPO for his work in bringing Illinois into compliance
with the National Voter Registration Act. Obama was also
the recipient of the Monarch Award for Outstanding Public
Service in 1994. Senator Obama serves on a number of civic
and philanthropic organizations such as the Joyce Foundation,
the Woods Fund of Chicago, and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
In 1995, Times Books published his memoir, Dreams From
My Father.
