Dean's Roundtables

I am pleased to announce the next two Dean’s Roundtables which I think will be especially interesting to those of you with entrepreneurial spirit. Lunch will be provided at both Roundtables. Please e-mail my Director of Institutional Projects, Insa Blanke, at iblanke@kentlaw.edu to reserve a spot at the Roundtable of your choice and apprise her of any special dietary needs.   We will accept reservations on a first-come basis and keep you informed if you end up on a waiting list.

Jonathan Carson, Class of 1997.  President and Co-Founder of Kurtzman Carson Consultants, El Segundo CA on  Wednesday, October 3, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Room 800.

Ward D. Parkinson, Class of 1997, co-founder of Micron Technology Inc. and Ovonyx, Inc. on Thursday, October 4, 2007, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Room 800.

Jonathan Carson, Class of 1997

Following his clerkship for a federal bankruptcy judge and a stint with Kirkland & Ellis’s bankruptcy practice, Jonathan Carson identified the need for greater efficiency in managing the administrative aspects of large-scale corporate restructurings. He left his successful legal practice to establish KCC, bringing advanced technology and a higher level of client service to the claims and noticing industry. Today, KCC provides support services and technology infrastructure to some of the country’s largest corporate bankruptcies, thereby reducing administrative costs and burdens of the restructuring process. Of the 40 largest bankruptcies in 2005, KCC was claims agent for 10.
Among other company developments over the past year, KCC opened a new office in Memphis, Tenn., a short distance from Federal Express’ hub, to better serve its clients’ growing document-production and distribution needs. Additionally, the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles relocated to a 45,000 sq. ft. building in El Segundo, Calif. to accommodate its growing staff (from 3 to 90 employees) and operations.
In recognition of their entrepreneurial achievements and leadership, Eric Kurtzman and Jonathan Carson were selected for the second consecutive year as finalists for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2007 Award in the Greater Los Angeles region.

Ward Parkinson, Class of 1997

Mr. Parkinson has more than 20 years of experience in the integrated circuit memory business. In 1978, he co-founded Micron Technology and served as its first chairman and CEO through the company’s initial public offering phase. He led design, product, and manufacturing ramp-up programs for multiple generations of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), from 64 kilobyte through 1 megabyte products.  Today, Micron Technology is among the top 20 semiconductor sales leaders worldwide.
Mr. Parkinson currently is Vice President and Director of Ovonyx, Inc., which he co-founded in 1999 with a charter to commercialize the proprietary phase-change semiconductor memory technology originally developed by Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD). ECD exclusively licensed all of its intellectual property in the area of phase-change electrical memories, including patents, trade secrets and know-how to Ovonyx.
Mr. Parkinson holds numerous patents relating to integrated circuit memory devises.
Mr. Parkinson is a former member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and founder and former Chairman of the Boise River Trail Foundation which built a walking path and bridges across the Boise River after a Micron employee was injured by a drunk driver.  In addition to Chicago-Kent, Ward attended Utah State University, BSEE and Stanford University, MSEE.  He is a member of the Chicago-Kent Board of Overseers.
