August 30: Palmer Prize Lecture: "Laws, Outlaws, and Terrorists: Lessons from the War on Terrorism."

The 2010 Palmer Civil Liberties Prize public lecture featuring Harvard Law Professors Gabriella Blum and Philip B. Heymann will be held on Tuesday, August 30 th at noon in the Abraham Marovitz Courtroom.  In their book, Laws, Outlaws, and Terrorists: Lessons from the War on Terrorism, Professors Blum and Heymann reject the argument that traditional American values embodied in domestic and international law can be ignored in any sustainable effort to keep the United States safe from terrorism. They argue that the costs are great and the benefits slight from separating security and the rule of law.

Established in 2007 at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law by alumnus Roy C. Palmer and his wife, Susan M. Palmer, the prize honors a work of scholarship that explores the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary American society. The prize is designed to encourage and reward public debate among scholars on current issues affecting the rights of individuals and the responsibilities of governments throughout the world.
