This week's tutorial will focus on federal tax research.  We will cover the Internal Revenue Code, IRS Regulations, Revenue Rulings, Private Letter Rulings, and Tax Treaties.  You can find the tutorial schedule posted in the entry way of the Information Center.  There is no need to sign up to attend; just come to the Reference Desk at the scheduled time.  If you have any questions or suggestions regarding tutorials, please e-mail Joe Mitzenmacher (JMITZENM).

Jury Verdict Reports on Lexis and Westlaw:
Jury Verdict Reporters provide information that is useful when deciding whether to take a case, and, if taken, how to proceed.  All Jury Verdict Reporters publish verdict or settlement amounts, type of injury, and case name and number.  In addition, they might include some or all of the following: geographical area, court, the facts of the case, plaintiff profile, expert witnesses, and/or counsel for the parties.

On Lexis, VERDCT; ALLVER includes more than 40 individual files that provide jury verdict and settlement information, some with coverage from 1984 forward.  Most of the individual files are state specific. A few are national in scope.  This combination of databases allows for a search across all of the files simultaneously.  Also, each of the files can be searched separately. To see a list of the files on Lexis, type "jury verdicts" in the "Find a Source" box.

On Westlaw, the LRP-JV database contains similar information, national in scope, some with coverage from 1987 forward.  Five additional databases that contain jury verdict and settlement information are  (1) ATLA-JV; national in scope (2) VST; national in scope (3) CA-JV; Superior Courts and the U.S. District Courts in California  (4) FL-JV; Florida Circuit Courts and the U.S. District Courts in Florida, and  (5) JVN; Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska.  To see a list of files on Westlaw, use "Search for Database" and type "jury verdicts."  On the New Westlaw, use "Find a Database," then "other," and type "jury verdicts."
