Summer Access to Lexis and Westlaw

Use of your Lexis and Westlaw student password is subject to each company’s policies summer access. If you aren’t sure about your situation, or if you have any questions, remember to ask a Librarian or your Lexis or Westlaw representative.

Lexis-Nexis To sign up for summer access, students must be involved in summer school, law review, law journal, moot court, a research project for a professor or member of clinical program staff, or employed by a public, non-profit organization with tax exempt status.  This does not include courts or federal, state, and local government.  You must also agree to the general terms and conditions for use that apply during the school year.  Lexis also provides access for graduating students who will be studying for the bar.  Details are available at http://www.lexisnexis.com/associates/newlawyer/.  You can register your ID at: http://lawschool.lexis.com/.

Westlaw Students may use Westlaw if they are enrolled in summer law school classes, involved in law review or law journal work, working on a project for a professor, or involved in moot court.  Each student automatically receives two hours of online time. For more time, you will need to register your password online and agree to Westlaw’s general terms for student use.  Students can also extend their password if they will be studying for the bar exam over the summer.  You can register your password by clicking on the extend link at http://lawschool.westlaw.com/.

Also, you may still come to the Library in the summer and use any of the online databases that are available at the Downtown Campus.  This includes Loislaw, a service similar to Lexis and Westlaw.  You may use your Loislaw password over the summer for any purpose.  If you have not signed up for a Loislaw password, ask a reference librarian how.

Resource of the Week

NATLEX  This resource is provided by the International Labour Organization.  It provides information on the ILO's functions, subject profiles on related issues, and national laws from a variety of countries on labor, social security, and related human rights.  NATLEX is a multi-language database; not all materials are available in English.

Library Book Sale

The Library is currently holding a book sale. The books are on the 9th floor, on the shelves to your left when you come in the Library's main entrance. Sales will be made on the honor system. Just put your money in the collection box located with the books. Paperback books are $1, hardback books are $2.

Stop by and check out the sale!

Library Suggestion Box

A new suggestion box is available in the Library.

The box is mounted to the wall on your right as you enter the Library on the 9th floor. All suggestions, comments, and complaints will be answered as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of receipt. Both suggestions and replies will be posted on a bulletin board to the left of the box.

You are not limited to the suggestion box!  Please send me an E-mail to: Keith Stiverson (KSTIVERS), give me a call (x65610), or come to see me in room 871 if there is anything you want to discuss about the Library or its services.

Keith Ann Stiverson, Library Director

Interlibrary Loan Policy

Interlibrary Loan is available to all Downtown Campus students.  This service can be used to borrow a book that is not owned by the Downtown Campus Libraries or a copy of an article not available in the library.  Once you are certain the library does not own an item and that it cannot be obtained through one of the online databases maintained by the library, send an email to illreq@kentlaw.edu to request a loan of the book.  The library's directory of online resources, including the catalog, is at infoctr.edu.  Please note that ILL requests commonly require one to two weeks to fill.

Consideration for Others in the Library

Please try to maintain a quiet atmosphere in the Library for the benefit of all those who are studying around you.  If you need to work in a group, study rooms are available.  You may use any unreserved study room, or make a reservation at the Service Desk with your current ID.

Study Room Policy

Study rooms are for group study by IIT students using the Downtown Campus Libraries' resources.  You may reserve a room in advance at the Service Desk with your current ID.

Library Cell  Phone Policy

Before entering the Library, cell phones must be turned off.  In addition, you must leave the Library before using your cell phone.  We have been inundated with complaints about the disturbances caused by cell phone usage in the Library, which has forced us to adopt this policy.

For those of you with an emergency situation who must be reachable by cell phone, you can leave your phone on ONLY if it gets your attention by some method other than ringing.  If you have one that vibrates quietly or uses a blinking light, you can leave it on while you are in the Library.  This exception does not change the requirement that you leave the Library to use your phone.

Library Food and Drink Policy

1) Drinks are permitted, except in the computer labs, if they are in a reusable hard plastic or metal container with a permanent lid that does not have to be removed to drink.  Water is allowed in a standard water bottle with a securable cap.

Not allowed are: cans, styrofoam or paper cups, soft drinks or juice in bottles.

2) Food is not permitted in the Library.

3) No food or drinks of any kind are allowed in the computer labs.

Please Guard Your Valuables

Personal belongings, such as laptops, wallets, purses, briefcases, cell phones, and Palmtops should be carried with you whenever you leave your study area. If they are left unattended, security personnel may remove them to a safer location.
