About the Certificate Program in Intellectual Property Law
Students in Chicago-Kent's IP Program earn a certificate in intellectual property law by successfully completing a course of study in intellectual property. In order to participate in the certificate program, students should complete a Letter of Intent and return this letter to Professor Graeme Dinwoodie. Only students who have submitted the Letter of Intent will receive priority to select intellectual property law courses during course registration, including our Intellectual Property-Patent clinic, one of the IP externships, and our unique capstone course Strategies in IP.
Students who study intellectual property law at Chicago-Kent learn
to draft intellectual property documents in the legal research and
writing program. Students can also develop their litigation skills
by participating on one of the law school's national competition-winning
moot court or trial advocacy teams, or in national intellectual
property law competitions such as the Giles
Rich Patent Moot Court Competition, the Lefkowitz Trademark Moot
Court Competition, or the Cardozo Copyright Competition.
Students may also participate in the Chicago IP Colloquium. Participating in the Colloquium allows students a unique opportunity to participate in discussions with leading scholars and practitioners concerning cutting-edge topics in the areas of intellectual property law and cyberlaw. The Colloquium offers an opportunity to students to advance their understanding of intellectual property law in a forum that brings together all of Chicago's educational and professional communities and that goes beyond traditional classroom-based learning. To facilitate an engaged dialogue between students, other colloquium participants, and invited scholars, the
IP Colloquium faculty from Chicago-Kent and Loyola lead students in discussion of background materials during the week prior to each formal presentation by an invited scholar. These "pre-presentation" sessions provide students with the benefit of faculty guidance in developing expertise in new areas of the law.
Chicago-Kent is a founding member of the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance (CIPA), which brings Chicago-Kent students into regular contact with practitioners, business professionals and policymakers in the field, and contributes to the intellectual and professional development of our students. The program works with our law firm, business and law school colleagues in the Alliance both to structure courses that reflect the challenges faced in the real world, and to facilitate the placement of our students as externs in intellectual property settings.
The Program works with Chicago-Kent's Intellectual Property Law Society
to promote educational and employment opportunities for students
in intellectual property. The society hosts speakers, typically
practitioners, on various aspects of intellectual property practice
and assists students in career development. The Intellectual Property
Law Society also sponsors field trips and a guest lecture series
which provide additional opportunities for learning.
The Journal of Intellectual Property is published by Chicago-Kent students, and presents in-depth analyses of fundamental issues affecting intellectual property rights. The journal is published via its Web site and is available on other electronic research services such as Lexis and Westlaw.
