September 5, 2006 -- Making Infringers Pay: A Lunchtime Roundtable Discussion

In eBay Inc. v. MercExchange L.L.C., the Supreme Court made clear that permanent injunctions are not always available in patent cases. Thus, infringers may be required to pay but not have to stop infringing a patent. This roundtable will explore the role of injunctions in patent, copyright, and trademark law, exploring their similarities and differences. The panel of Chicago-Kent faculty will also discuss the potential impact of eBay beyond the patent context.

October 12-13, 2006 -- Conference: Intellectual Property, Trade and Development: Accommodating and Reconciling Different National Levels of Protection

Both the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have stressed that intellectual property is a key to the development of emerging economies. Developed countries view intellectual property rights as central to the protection of their commerical interests in an era of global trade. Yet, the different perspectives of developed and developing countries may give rise to quite different notions of appropriate forms and levels of protection. A central question in current intellectual property debates is how, and to what extent, to reconcile and/or accommodate these differences.

At this event, key officials from the Copyright Sector of the World Intellectual Property Organization will provide an update on pending and emerging issues, and will address the challenges facing WIPO and international copyright policymakers in the current political climate. WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations system whose history dates back more than a century, through its custodianship of such international filing mechanisms as the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and, for trademarks, the Madrid Protocol. Balázs Bodó is a Fulbright Visiting Researcher at The Center for Internet and Society, Stanford Law School, and an Economist, Assistant Lecturer, and Researcher at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Department of Sociology and Communications.
