August 28, 2007 -- Panel Discussion: Access to Copyrighted Works Protected by Technological Measures

A lunchtime panel discussion addressing whether technological measures are helping or hurting access to copyrighted works. The panel will include presentations by Professor Graeme Dinwoodie and Professor Maciej Barczewski from the University of Gdansk. Lunch will be provided.

September 7, 2007 -- The Patent Cooperation Treaty in 2007

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), administered by the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) provides the mechanism whereby a patent application may be filed to have effect in many countries, an alternative to filing individually. The use of PCT saves time as well as the cost of such individual filings. Matthew Bryan, a key official from the PCT Legal Division of WIPO, will provide an update on pending and emerging issues surrounding the administration of PCT, its rules and regulations, and the related Authorities. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Program in Intellectual Property Law, the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance (CIPA), and WIPO.
Registration is required for this program. Attendees are eligible for 3.0 hours of CLE credit on a 60-minute credit hour including 1.0 hour of ethics (pending approval by the Illinois Commission on Professionalism).

October 9, 2007 -- Lunchtime Presentation featuring Finnish Scholar Mikko Välimäki

Mikko Välimäki, a Finnish scholar, will give a presentation entitled, "From File Sharing to Open Content - Drawing the Line between Legal and Illegal." Mr. Välimäki is a research fellow at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration in Helsinki and also teaches technology and intellectual property law as an adjunct professor at Helsinki University of Technology.

February 26, 2008 -- Lunchtime Discussion: My Way? Or the Highway? Intellectual Property Dilemmas of Online Gaming

J. Michael Monahan from Pattishall McAulliffe will be on hand to discuss legal issues in the video game industry with IP students. Mr. Monahan has been involved in video game law and has spoken and written about rights in user-generated content particularly in the MMO space (massively multi-player online games).

- Somewhat curious about what this “IP stuff” is all about?
- Not certain whether someone without a technical background can take IP classes (yes, you can) or pursue an IP career (yes, you can)?
If you answer yes, or even “maybe,” to any of these questions, then you should attend the IP class selection program on Tuesday, April 22 at noon in Room 580.
At this session, Chicago-Kent’s IP faculty will give a quick overview of potential careers in IP and explain the differences amongst the various disciplines. They will then go over the slate of IP classes to be offered in the 2008-09 school year and provide suggestions and strategies as to which classes to take.
