August 20, 2008 -- Panel Discussion: "EU Copyright Law -- Current Problems and Prospects for the Future"

Dr. Maciej Barczewski, a prominent Polish scholar and visiting professor at Chicago-Kent, will discuss current issues in EU copyright law.

September 2, 2008 -- IP Faculty Roundtable: "You Can Patent That?!? The Debate Over Patent Subject Matter Eligibility"

Professor Tim Holbrook and a panel of speakers will discuss patent subject matter eligibility in the context of recent Federal Circuit case, In re Bilski. The dispute over Bernard Bilski's patent application, claiming a method of managing costs associated with commodities trading, raises important issues concerning what types of inventions are patentable as well as broader issues of how intellectual property law accommodates new technologies. The panelists include Professor Ted Field and adjunct professors Patrick Burns and Bob Surrette.

Nerissa Coyle McGinn, a prominent IP practitioner at Loeb & Loeb and adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School, will discuss the impact of user generated content on advertising and IP law. Ms. McGinn's presentation is entitled, "Down the Tube: An Overview of Advertising Law Through User Generated Content."

October 2, 2008 -- Lunchtime Presentation: Paul Heald

Professor Paul Heald, visiting professor at The University of Chicago Law School, will discuss his most recent copyright piece where he tests the over- and under-exploitation hypothesis in the context of public domain musical compositions' use in cinema. Professor Heald's paper is entitled, "Testing the Over- And Under-Exploitation Hypothesis: Bestselling Musical Compositions (1913-32) And Their Use In Cinema (1968-2007)."

October 15, 2008 -- 5th Annual Federal Circuit Roundtable Discussion

The annual Federal Circuit Roundtable brings together former federal circuit clerks to discuss seminal issues of patent law. November 13, 2008 -- IPLS Copyright Luncheon Panel on Jacobsen v. Katzer

The topic of discussion for this semester's IPLS Copyright Luncheon Panel is "Open Source Licensing and the Federal Circuit's Decision in Jacobsen v. Katzer." The panel will feature Chicago-Kent Professors Henry Perritt (moderator) and Richard Warner (speaker). The guest speakers include William McGrath of Davis McGrath, Evan Brown of Hinshaw & Culbertson, and Mark Partridge of Pattishall, McAulliffe.

November 19, 2008 -- IPLS Patent Lunch Panel Discussion: Egyptian Goddess v. Swisa

This semester's IPLS Patent Lunch Panel Discussion will focus on Design Patents, specifically the effects on the test for design patent infringement from the recent en banc Federal Circuit opinion in Egyptian Goddess v. Swisa. The featured speakers include Perry Saidman of SAIDMAN DesignLaw Group, the first and most successful U.S. law firm to specialize in the patenting of designs, and Brian Arnold, a Chicago-Kent graduate and associate at Bell, Boyd & Lloyd, LLP. Professor Tim Holbrook will serve as moderator.

Visiting Professor Alexander von Mühlendahl, former vice-president of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), will discuss current issues in international trademark law. The title of the presentation is "Extra Protection for Trademarks Under EU Law."

This panelists for this discussion are Tom Leavens, Peter Strand, and Professor Henry Perritt. These veteran IP attorneys and music industry experts will represent the views of the consumer, the recording industry, and technology companies. April 8, 2009 -- Guest Speaker: Catherine Kessedjian

Professor Catherine Kessedjian, University of Paris II (Pantheon-Assas), will discuss international IP litigation. Professor Kessedjian has mediated and arbitrated numerous transnational disputes. She also served as Deputy Secretary-General of the Hague Conference on Private International Law in The Hague, Netherlands.

April 21, 2009 -- Chicago IP Colloquium Speaker, Professor Frank Pasquale

The IP faculty will give a quick overview of potential careers in IP and explain the differences amongst the various disciplines. They also will go over the slate of IP courses to be offered for the 2009-10 school year and provide suggestions and strategies as to which classes to take.
