Intellectual Property Alumni Spotlight

Ulrike Koschtial

Ulrike KoschtialUlrike Koschtial studied at Chicago-Kent Law School in the year 2000-01 taking part in the LL.M. Programme on International and Comparative Law on a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service and the Kent-Law School. She received a Cali-award for her performance in the comparative law class.

Currently she is working as attorney at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, in the Section of Museums and Cultural Objects. She is responsible for the promotion of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and has also worked in the Secretariat of the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property and an Intergovernmental Committee promoting the return of cultural property to its countries of origin. Before coming to UNESCO Ulrike Koschtial worked as lawyer in Germany in the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Ulrike Koschtial speaks English, French, Spanish, and Italian fluently as well as her mother tongue German.

Her other qualifications in the law include a full German law degree from the Technische Universität Dresden (1st and 2nd State Exam) and a PhD on comparative and international law obtained with summa cum laude (highest honours) at the renowned Max-Planck-Institute, Munich, Germany. She also studied cultural management at the IKM in Vienna, Austria. Ulrike Koschtial received also a special award for academic excellence from the Munich Ludwig-Maximilian-University. 

Her publications include several articles on intellectual property law, on the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property, the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and a major publication on the protection of industrial design.
