Summer Externship For-Credit Opportunity

The General Counsel of a small independent retail electric supplier serving non-residential businesses throughout Illinois, with headquarters in downtown Chicago, is willing to supervise an extern this summer. The General Counsel oversees all legal matters, running the gamut from drafting contracts, reviewing contracts, regulatory filings with city, county, state and federal agencies, litigation before the Illinois Commerce Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, drafting and handling lawsuits against customers, negotiating contracts, and pretty much everything else that comes up. As a member of senior management, the General Counsel is also involved in almost every aspect of business decisions as well.

The right Kent student would have an excellent experience working there. If he/she has a particular interest in energy law, he/she would be able to gain invaluable experience. If he/she is interested in learning how to be a “business” lawyer, this would also be a perfect fit.

Any interested student should submit a resume and transcript as soon as possible to Professor Gross, Room 617.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR CURRENT 2Ls

FALL 2005 SEMESTER: EXTERNSHIPS WITH U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS

If you are interested in exposure to and possible participation in federal trial and appellate practice while assisting the U.S. Attorney’s Office in handling its multitude of important cases, please pick up an application from Professor Gross in Room 617.

Completed applications must be received at the Office of the U.S. Attorney by Monday, April 18, 2005. The reason for this accelerated date is because each accepted extern must go through a security clearance, which takes several weeks.

To receive law school credit for this externship, should you be selected by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, you must enroll in the law school’s Legal Externship Program. The law school’s externship applications for Fall Semester, 2005 will be available in Room 600 Law Offices reception area and in the Career Services office in early March.

Professor Gross will be happy to answer any questions you may have about either the Externship Program or the externship position with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

LADR!

LITIGATION AND ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROGRAM

The LADR Faculty Committee will consider the applications and inform the students of its decision sometime in March 2005.

JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIPS: SUMMER AND FALL 2005 SEMESTERS

1L APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM G.P.A. OF 3.275.
2L APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM G.P.A. OF 3.3.

Judicial Externship enables a student to become involved in particular legal problems through research and writing, and to contribute to the resolution of those legal problems. Depending upon the judge, an extern may have the opportunity to observe the day-to-day routine of a judge and discuss with the judge and the judge's law clerk those legal problems which attorneys face in their profession, and the specific problems which attorneys confront in their courtroom.

Take advantage of this prestigious learning opportunity while enhancing your marketability in the legal world. If you are interested in a judicial externship but are unable to attend the meeting, please see Professor Gross in Room 617. E-mail: vgross@kentlaw.edu

Application Process

Applications for the Summer and Fall Judicial Externships will be available both in the Law Offices reception area (Room 600), and in the Career Services Office as of Friday, February 4th.

Completed applications for Summer Externships should be submitted to Ms. Carole Ross, Secretary to Professor Gross, Room 612 of Law Offices, by Friday, February 25th, at 5:00 p.m.

Completed applications for Fall Externships should be submitted to Ms. Carole Ross, Secretary to Professor Gross, Room 612 of Law Offices, by Friday, March 4th, at 5:00 p.m.

Please do not apply for an externship unless you intend to accept an offer to extern. And just as important, after you accept a judicial externship with one of the participating federal judges, you have committed yourself to that judge for the coming semester. For the sake of the continued success of the Judicial Externship Program and the ability of Kent students to be able to continue to have the privilege of externing with these judges, you cannot withdraw from or drop Judicial Externship as you can other law school courses. Breaching your promise to a federal judge to extern is the equivalent of ethical misconduct. So bottom line: if you are entertaining the possibility of transferring or visiting at another law school for the coming semester, do not apply for a judicial externship that semester.
