JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIPS: SUMMER/FALL 2012 SEMESTERS

Judicial Externship is a 4-credit hour Pass/Low Pass/Fail program open to students who have completed at least their first full year of law school and want to do legal research and writing for a federal appellate, district or magistrate judge or a designated Illinois appellate or circuit court judge.

Take advantage of this prestigious learning opportunity while enhancing your marketability in the legal world. If you are interested in a judicial externship but are unable to attend the meeting, please see Professor Gross in Room 617.

Application Process

Applications for the Summer and Fall Judicial Externships are now available in the Law Offices reception area (Room 600), in the Career Services Office, and in front of the Spakateria. Because the program requires a grade point cutoff, the distribution of applications are necessarily delayed until such time as current grades and ranks are announced.

Completed applications for Summer Judicial Externships should be submitted to Ms. Carole Ross, Secretary to Professor Gross, Room 612 of Law Offices, by Tuesday, February 21st, at 5:00 p.m.

Completed applications for Fall Judicial Externships should be submitted to Ms. Carole Ross, Secretary to Professor Gross, Room 612 of Law Offices, by Thursday, March 1st, at 5:00 p.m.

Summer/Fall Judicial Externships – Circuit Court of Cook County – Law Division (4 credit hours)
2Ls and 3Ls

The Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County at the Daley Center is now accepting applications for students interested in summer and fall externships.

The Law Division hears civil suits for recovery of monetary damages in excess of $30,000 in the City of Chicago, and in excess of $100,000 in the suburban districts, as well as many types of administrative reviews. Cases heard include wrongful death, personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability, commercial litigation, fraud, breach of contract, premises liability, and others.

Externs perform a variety of tasks, including legal research, the preparation of legal memoranda, document review, preparing draft orders, and observing and assisting with the trial process. Each extern works under the direct supervision of a judge and, if applicable, the judge's law clerk.

Qualified rising 2Ls and 3Ls should submit a cover letter and resume to Judge Maddux (see address below) no later than Monday, February 27, 2012. Please send a hard copy of your resume. No email submissions will be accepted. Interviews will be conducted towards the beginning of March.

ACCESS2PRACTICE
LEGAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

A2P Legal Externship is a 4-credit hour non-graded program which enables you to extern with a supervising attorney in a wide variety of legal areas – private or public, civil or criminal. Externships are available for the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Some public sector externships enable you to obtain a 711 license and appear in court.

Why Extern?

To become a good lawyer and to supplement what you learn in the classroom, you need practical experience in real-world legal work. Most students aren't fortunate enough to receive a paid clerking position — or even a volunteer opportunity — that teaches what they want to learn. LEP presents a unique and important opportunity to gain exposure to an area of the law in which you are interested and helps you significantly broaden your future employment opportunities.

Students interested in civil law may extern in a wide variety of places. For example, some have externed at the City of Chicago Corporation Counsel's Office, Office of the Illinois Attorney General, Illinois Commerce Commission, Immigration Court of the U.S. Department of Justice, Internal Revenue Service, and Environmental Protection Agency, as well approved in-house corporate legal counsel.

Students interested in criminal law have externed at the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Office of the Federal Defender, and at the offices of the State's Attorney and Public Defender in Cook County as well as the surrounding counties.

Application Process:

Information and application packets for Summer and Fall 2012 are now available both on line as well as in front of the Spakateria, in Career Services Office, and in Room 600 Law Offices reception area.

Informational Meeting:

Professor Gross will conduct an informational meeting on Legal Externships for Summer and/or Fall on Tuesday, February 21, at noon in Room C-35.

SUMMER 2012 SEMESTER: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE – CHICAGO IMMIGRATION COURT

The United States Department of Justice has openings for externs with the Chicago Immigration Court for the summer of 2012. All current first and second year law students are eligible and encouraged to apply. Prior knowledge of immigration law is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Strong research and writing skills are required.

Issues commonly before the Court include asylum, cancellation of removal, and motions to reopen. The types of projects assigned to externs will entail:

  • Research and preparation of memoranda on complex legal issues
  • Drafting decisions on motions pending before the Court
  • Drafting decisions on applications for relief from removal.

Externs will work under the supervision of the Court's Attorney Advisors, but will also have interaction with individual Immigration Judges.

All applicants must be United States citizens. A commitment of 35-40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks is required by the Court.

If you are interested, please email a detailed cover letter, resume, law school transcript (official or unofficial), and writing sample of no more than fifteen pages, to:

Jonathan Calkins, Attorney Advisor
jonathan.calkins@usdoj.gov

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

Interviews will be held between March 5 and March 9. Externs will be expected to start in May or early June 2012.

Please notify Prof. Gross (vgross@kentlaw.edu) if you are selected as an extern and wish to receive credit.
