Welcome Back

We hope you had an enjoyable winter break and are ready to dive back in to your academics. We have been pretty busy here and would like to update you on a few things to make your back to school transition a bit easier.

New Student Identification Cards

As you may or may not know, all student records were stored in the university's student information system (SIS) by student social security number. This storage necessitated the use of the social security number for other university services such as your student identification card, web access, and the library. We are pleased to announce that as of December 30, 2003 all student records were assigned a unique eight-digit number in the SIS system (Campus-Wide Identification number). This number is unique to IIT and valid for all university services. Students may obtain their new Student ID number by logging into Web for Students with their current ID number (social security or 999) and pin. The system will immediately display this number upon successful login. You may continue to login with either your new IIT Campus-Wide Identification Number (CWID) or your SSN or 999 numbers.

In order to access university services, you will need to have a new student identification card displaying your CWID. This identification card will also serve as your library card for all IIT libraries and related services. You need not take a new picture and the ID cards are already printed. Simply turn in your old ID and pick up the new one. Identification card and UPASS pick up times and locations are listed below.

We are sure that you will have many questions about this transition and we have tried to anticipate your inquiries in the FAQ section below. Take a moment to read the FAQ document. If you have any additional questions about this transition please feel free to contact the Registrar's Office at regq@kentlaw.edu or call us at 312.906.5080.

Campus-Wide Identification Number Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the university proceeding with this change?
IIT is moving forward with this change to provide an added layer of protection to our students and their identity. This change will allow students to use services and identify themselves to individuals inside and outside of the university without ever revealing their social security number. With the ever-increasing threat of identity theft occurring today we would like to offer this added protection to our students.

How will this affect my use of Web for Students?
This change will NOT affect your login or password for Web for Students. Students may authenticate using their social security number (or 999 number) or their new Campus-Wide Identification Number.

How will this affect my password for my email account?
Your email and network passwords will remain unchanged.

How can I find out what my Campus-Wide Identification Number is?
Students may view their assigned Campus-Wide Identification Number on Web for Students. Simply login to your account after January 15, 2004 and the system will tell you your new number. (https://webforsun.cns.iit.edu/ahomepg.htm). Your CWID is also printed on your student ID card. Your CWID is the last eight digits of the number shown on your student ID card. The first six digits (627350) represent the university wide identifier which is used for inter - library loans and other library services.

How do I obtain a new Student ID Card?
You can pick up your new identification card in the side lobby at the following times:

How will this affect my use of the library and online services?
Beginning immediately, you will need the new ID to check out books from the library, because a new integrated library system put into place over the holiday break requires the new ID. Your access to the Library's electronic databases is the same. You will still reach them via network logon, which has not changed.

Do I still need to provide my Social Security Number to the University?
Students will only need to provide their Social Security Number if they are applying and receiving Federal Financial Aid or if you are employed by the University. These numbers are required for federal tax reporting purposes and will only be used by staff responsible for these areas
