Notice About H1N1 (Swine Flu).

As you settle into the new semester, we would like to let you know about our preparations in case the H1N1 virus (swine flu) affects you or other members of the Chicago-Kent community. You can find detailed information in our H1N1 FAQ at http://www.kentlaw.edu/depts/stuservices/H1N1faq.html. We would particularly like to encourage you to follow the guidelines listed below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jenna Abhijeet, our Director of Student Services, at jabhijeet@kentlaw.edu.

  • Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen). If you do come down with the flu, please contact Jenna Abhijeet at jabhijeet@kentlaw.edu or 312.906.5005 so that we can stay in touch with you about coursework and other matters.
  • Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
  • Practice respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread this way.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. As noted above, a fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius. Look for possible signs of fever: if you feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or experience sweating or shivering.
  • Talk with your health care providers about whether you should be vaccinated for seasonal flu. In particular, if you are at higher risk for flu complications from H1N1, you should consider getting the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available. People at higher risk for H1N1 complications include pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes). For more information about priority groups for vaccination, visit www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/acip.htm.

Chicago-Kent will continue to monitor the situation and will notify the community of any additional changes to our institution’s strategy to prevent the spread of flu on our campus.

Orientation Leaders for Fall 2010

Orientation Leaders and Mentors Wanted. Each year, entering students tell us that much of their most informative and valuable information comes from other students. As someone who has been there, your advice can be critical to the success of our incoming class. As an Orientation Leader, your tasks may include leading a lunch or dinner discussion with a group of students on the first day of Orientation (Monday, August 16, 2010); helping take ID photos; or answering questions and giving advice. As a Mentor, you will be paired with one or two first-year students to provide one-on-one advice and guidance about adjusting to the law school experience.

If interested in being a Mentor: Fill out the online form linked to this page by July 14, 2010. You will be contacted with your match information no later than the first week of classes.

If interested in being an Orientation Leader: Please e-mail Jenna Abhijeet . We will follow-up closer to the start of the school year with teh schedule and plan of events

Academic Resource Library

The Office of Student Services maintains a small resource library of study aids and other materials for first year classes, including Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Justice, Property, and Torts. Students can borrow materials for a three-day period. This is a great way to preview a study aid before you buy it or do a quick review for a class. If you are interested in borrowing a book or flashcards, please see Jenna Abhijeet in Room 310a.
