Adjunct Faculty Biographies

Ali Ahmed

Ali Ahmed is currently Senior Patent Counsel for APP Pharmaceuticals/Fresenius Kabi and practices litigation, prosecution, and opinion work in the chemical, medical device, and pharmaceutical technologies. Prior to joining APP Pharmaecuticals/Fresenius Kabi, Mr. Ahmed was a patent attorney at Winston & Strawn LLP and Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner LLP. 

Mr. Ahmed focuses on all aspects of patent litigation, including drafting claim-construction and summary-judgment motions, preparing expert witnesses for trial, and conducting and defending depositions. He has also broad experience representing plaintiffs and defendants in trade secret litigations.

Mr. Ahmed maintains an active patent prosecution practice, drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications on behalf of domestic and foreign clients. Moreover, he has experience in reissue and reexamination proceedings and appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.

In addition to his prosecution and litigation practice, Mr. Ahmed advises clients on a wide variety of patent matters, often studying competitor products to advise clients on enforcement of their patent portfolios and prepares validity, infringement, patentability, and clearance opinions.

Mr. Ahmed gained significant patent law experience at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during law school. Mr. Ahmed was, also, awarded a fellowship from the American Bar Association to assist Judge Ronald Guzman with patent litigations in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In addition, he worked as a law clerk at the Federal Trade Commission, focusing on patent infringement litigation brought by brand-name companies against generic applicants that have filed ANDAs with paragraph IV certifications. 

Before practicing law, Mr. Ahmed worked as a project engineer at Tyco Healthcare/Mallinckrodt conducting development studies for pharmaceutical batch processes.
