Tutorial 2: Consideration
The law does not enforce every bargain formed by offer and acceptance.
Suppose, for example, that Bill invites Sally to dinner. The invitation is purely personal, not business dealings of any sort are involved. When Sally is reluctant to accept the invitation, Bill says, “I promise I will cook steak.” Sally accepts the offer by promising to come to dinner.
It is very unlikely that a court would enforce either Bill’s promise to cook steak, or Sally’s promise to come to dinner.
So what promises will the law enforce?
