Karlyn was homeschooled in a military family that eventually settled down in Texas. She graduated cum laude from the Honors Program at Texas Lutheran University with a BBA in Marketing and a minor in Spanish. After graduation, Karlyn worked as a proofreader in San Antonio. She moved to Chicago and attended Chicago-Kent with her husband.
At Chicago-Kent, Karlyn spent two months of her 1L summer interning with the Army JAG Corps in Baumholder, Germany. She spent the rest of her summer and the fall of her 2L year interning with the 19th Judicial Circuit Court in Lake County. After serving on the Student Editorial Board for the Center for Access to Justice and Technology, she became a member and senior associate of the Moot Court Honor Society. She has focused her studies on intellectual property law, receiving national publication for her scholarship regarding the law's application to video games.
