About the Institute for Law and the Workplace
Institute Activities:
The annual Kenneth M. Piper Memorial Lecture in labor law
brings together experts from labor, management and academia to debate
current issues in the workplace.
The annual Federal Sector Labor Relations and Labor Law Program
is the largest conference on federal sector and postal labor relations
and labor law held outside of Washington, D.C.
The annual Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Law Program
is the major conference on public sector labor law in the state,
drawing upwards of 500 lawyers and labor relations professionals
to the law school each year.
Conferences for Labor Arbitrators are held periodically
in cooperation with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.The
conferences give midwest labor arbitrators an opportunity to focus
on key issues affecting the field of arbitration.
Institute Publications:
Students in the Program in Labor and Employment Law have the opportunity
to participate on student editorial boards for ChicagoKent publications
devoted to labor and employment law issues:
The Employee Rights and Employment Policy Joumal
publishes articles containing diverse perspectives on legal and
lawrelated issues focused on the well-being of employees in the
workplace. Published jointly with Workplace Fairness, the journal
is multidisciplinary in approach, welcoming submissions from individuals
in all disciplines, including labor and employment law, labor
economics, labor relations, human resources management, sociology,
and industrial psychology.
The Illinois Public Employee Relations Report provides
current, nonadversarial information to those involved or interested
in employer-employee relations in public employment. The report
is published jointly with the Institute of Labor and Industrial
Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Institute Resources:
The Chicago-Area Labor Arbitration bwards Repository, housed
in the downtown campus library, holds awards of labor arbitrators
who service the Chicago region. The repository is co-sponsored with
the Chicago region of the American Arbitration Association and has
been electronically imaged for online access.
Students have access to three libraries within the Information
Center at the Downtown Campus location for additional research
materials:
- The Chicago-Kent Law Library maintains a comprehensive collection
of treatises and looseleaf services for research in the labor
and employment law areas.
- The Libary of International Relations is a depository library
for materials from the International Labor Organization (ILO).
- The Stuart School of Business Library provides traditional
business materials and numerous CD-ROMs containing company,
product, securities, and other business information.
