Work/Life Balance and the White-Collar Employee under the FLSA By Abstract This article examines the history, text and application
of the FLSA minimum wage and overtime provisions as maximum hours labor
standards and the current and proposed rules for the white-collar exemptions.
It also reconciles the literature on time-squeeze, showing the existence
of time-squeeze among white-collar workers, especially women and couples
in dual-earners households,a nd demonstrates why comp time is not a
solution for balancing work and family life. This articles concludes
by proposing amendment to the FLSA that protect workers, including white-collar
employees, from time-squeeze, and provide employers and the judiciary
with clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date standards.
