London Consortium (United Kingdom)

Program Description

The London Law Consortium, England
Each year Chicago-Kent together with six other ABA-approved law schools presents an opportunity to study in London for the spring semester only. The program usually runs from January to April. The cost in 2009 is estimated at approximately $8,200.00 in addition to paying for credit hours at Chicago-Kent and all extra expenses. Approximately six students from each participating school can enroll in the program. The students will also have an opportunity to participate in a legal externship while in London. Dean Steve Sowle's office coordinates this program, and the application deadline is usually in the first week of September.

Country Background Notes

"As the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars and the Irish republic withdraw from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process." Country Travel Notes

"A journey through England is a journey through history - from the ancient megaliths of Stonehenge to the space-age domes of the Eden Project in Cornwall. It's also a trip to the 21st-century: London is gearing up for the 2012 Olympics while cities like Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle revel in their heritage and confidently face the future, with industrial buildings revitalised as waterfront galleries or trendy apartments, flanked by tempting bars, shops, restaurants and some of the finest music venues in the world.
For visitors, the beauty of travel in England is the compact nature of the country. By spending less time going between places and more time in them, you can immerse yourself in the scenery, instead of just breezing through. Whether you're strolling the undulating hills of Oxfordshire, cycling in Norfolk, surfing off Newquay or rock-climbing in the Peak District, England is perfect for activity and adventure. And with time on your side, you'll get closer to understanding local sensibilities: relaxing with the locals in a country pub, enjoying a music festival or watching a cricket match." Weather Report

"Despite apparent randomness, there is a seasonal pattern. Rain falls less often in summer (June to August), and there’s normally more sunshine, although there’ll be cloudy days too. Conversely, winter (November to February) may enjoy fantastic clear spells between bouts of snow, while spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) can sometimes produce the best weather of the year. There are also variations over distance: southern England might be chilly, while the north enjoys a heat wave. Or vice versa. Be prepared for anything and you won’t get a surprise." This information came from The Weather Channel. Find out the current weather report in London by clicking here.
